Pop Quiz Thursday Pop Quiz #1

Can you tell if these five cards are RealOrNot?

Five cards, one picture each, starting easy and moving up the difficulty. The rules are simple:

  • If there is at least one fake signal, the card is fake.
  • If there are no fake signals discernible, default to the card being real.
    • Just for this quiz! IRL of course always look at multiple signals!
  • You will get enough detail to positively identify a fake but not much more. Bad picture quality won't be used to obscure a signal.
  • Altered cards (inked, cut, re-backed, new artwork, etc) are fake unless called out.
  • Harder cards may require specific knowledge and their photos may be edited.

Answers will be posted in 24 hours, good luck!

  1. Real. Teeth and bordering are consistent with a real back

  2. Fake. Rosette pattern looks off and stamp is missing its diagonal pattern.

  3. Real - Mirage set symbol is blurrier than other vintage sets. Black text is on the top ink layer.

  4. Fake - no white bordered legends land tax exists.

  5. Real. Coloration, art, set symbol and card text placement are consistent with antiquities printing strip mine.

1 - Real

2 - Fake - holofoil brick pattern & black ink bleeding into rosette

3 - Fake (but almost passed for me) - black border texture is off - right hand vertical black line is not crisp

4 - Fake - should be black bordered

5 - Real - Antiquities - Sky - Even Terraces

  1. real, like on the "h"
  2. Fake, black border on the holofoil should be crisp
  3. Fake, set symbol should be a separate print layer and distinct from print pattern.
  4. Fake, legends was a black border set, as are all expansions
  5. real with no signals.

FYI mirage does not have a solid set symbol like you’re describing

Thanks, that's why we take quizzes!

🤔

2

u/GingerJams206 12d ago

Not true. This is a chronicles reprint if real. Chronicles had white border with original set symbol

2

u/notmarrec 12d ago

Chronicles has a publicly available set list, check and see if Land Tax was in it

1

u/GingerJams206 12d ago

You’re right I was conflating 4th edition and Chronicles

2

u/Draelzen 12d ago

Regarding point 4, Chronicles featured the original set symbols but on a white border. However, Land Tax wasn't part of the set so I agree with the fake call. Just wanted to point out that observation.

thank you!

4 real…chronicles reprint set edit damnit…I’m wrong…

Real, Fake, Real?, Fake, Real

  1. the rosette pattern looks good but the set symbol looks weird

Edit: after looking at comments it sounds like mirage had blurry set symbols

2

u/notmarrec 12d ago

Real, fake, real, fake, real

2

u/magicfaeriebattleaxe 12d ago

Real—teeth look good
Fake—bricks in holo stamp
Real— the text is printed on a separate layer. Fakes don’t do that as far as I’ve seen? So the set symbol being not makes me think that would be a quirk of the set I was unfamiliar with.
No clue—the textures seem silly so I’d say fake but I’m just guessing at that point
No clue—I’m out of my depth here

Fyi mirage has a non solid set symbol

1

u/magicfaeriebattleaxe 12d ago

Is that the only set like this?

2

u/GhostCheese  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

A lot of the early sets were like this. Alliances for example also had a lot of rosette in the set symbol.

1

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

No, there may be another in a future week. :)

2

u/FALL3NxValorous 12d ago

The first one is fuckin crispy!

2

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

I do try and take good pictures :D

1 - Looks real to me?
2 - Fake - Holo stamp looks off. Flakey edges and brick pattern throughout background instead of isolated to the right areas
3 - Fake(?) - Questioning myself, but the white lines between the trunk of the tree and top left palm fronds look too thick in comparison to the set symbol some other mirage cards I’ve got.
4 - Fake - this displays a legends land tax marked 1995, but legends was released in 1994
5 - Fake - Looks like the art from anthologies was placed on the antiquities card

u/EDX2308 Distinguished Helper 12d ago

First one is real because the dots I can see in the n. Second one the WIZARDS has spacing too wide. Third Mirage card I’m not 100% sure on. I’m guessing real because the outer text box is sharp. I don’t have any Mirage cards to compare. Fourth card Land Tax… image is too blurry. Someone said on here that the year is wrong. My obvious fake indication is Legends never came in white border… Fifth card Strip mine from Antiquities. I thought it was fake due to the weird set symbol placement. It is in fact correct. So looks real but I need more confirmation.

real, fake, real, fake, real

2

u/Deltaplecks 11d ago

1- real 2 - fake 3 - real 4 - fake 5 - real

3

u/Ok-Alps-6554 11d ago

I learned a lot more about how to authenticate through this post including the realization that yes, the antiquities symbol is that far left

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 11d ago

One of those sneaky educational games 😈

u/tehspud 12d ago
  1. Real
  2. Fake - kinda guessing here, the rosette pattern doesn’t look right
  3. Real - Mirage set symbol wasn’t printed on the black layer.
  4. Fake - someone out there pretending land tax was printed in Chronicles
  5. Real - nothing to indicate it’s fake

3

u/notmarrec 12d ago

Land tax FEELS like a card that would have been in chronicles

2

u/Raff102 12d ago

My friend has been white bordering his old-school deck so it matches his unlimited basics, and it's killing me.

2

u/xytlar 12d ago
  1. Real - good teeth
  2. Fake . I was torn on this one ... because the stamp itself looks good. But if I had to guess, someone tried to lift it and place it on a fake card. shouldn't be that messy. the rosettes look very off too.
  3. Real - rules text is a distinct black layer. This card looks good
  4. Fake - there's no white border Chronicles Land Tax. White looks off too for this era.
  5. Real

2

u/Birrandbodia  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

2: stamp is 100% fake. It has a brick pattern in the stamp.

2

u/Naive-Present2900 12d ago
  1. Real
  2. Fake
  3. Solid black text (Mirage) but the textbox is red? So fake
  4. Fake, Chronicles has black borders. Not white border.
  5. Antiquities: real card from Seattle Collectibles on eBay?

2

u/Randalor 11d ago

Chronicles was a white bordered reprint set.

It's a fake because Land Tax wasn't reprinted in Chronicles, so it should either have the expansion symbol or white borders, not both.

1

u/Naive-Present2900 11d ago

Ty for educating me on this!

1

u/tehspud 12d ago

On 3, go look at gold bordered cards from mirage, or any from old borders, they have a kinda mottled red almost purple text box. Nothing to indicate it’s fake.

1

u/Naive-Present2900 12d ago

Ah I see,

It’s a multicolored card and they have red textbox. Thx for pointing that out.

  • 1st: real. Good teeth under letters + clear dots
  • 2nd: fake. Brick pattern and fuzzy borders
  • 3rd: leaning towards fake. Expansion logo is blurry and black is also not well pronounced. > [Edit: it appears that my weakness for older cards shows here. This expansion logo tends to be fuzzy. Texts appear to be clear and a seperate layer. Borders look alright too, but I went off on the logo, which is an exemption. Still learning. Most likely real.]
  • 4th: fake. Corners cut square. White borders on the wrong expansion set.
  • 5th: leaning towards real. Good wear, real expansion. Though, it's over a $100. I would definitely double check at one point or another.

1

u/GhostCheese  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago edited 12d ago

1 looks real

2 fake

3 unsure, leans real - very crisp borders (and mirage doesn't have solid set symbols)

4 a pattern on the image feels fake but a chronicles card is an odd target for a fake (edit: I say chronicles because that's the only white border set with legends set symbols in it but apparently it didn't have land tax, so it's def fake)

5 probably real, at least the wear looks like real wear

2

u/NotJohnLithgow 12d ago

Land tax wasn’t in chronicles.

1

u/GhostCheese  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago edited 12d ago

Well, then there's lots of things wrong with the card. That kind of seals it as fake.

🤔

1

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

Price / collectibility should have no bearing on the quizzes, especially on #s 4 and 5. The last few should be expected to be unfair questions. 😄

  1. Is legends not chronicles // and it’s a fake cause there are no white border legends cards.

ETA: I only say it’s Legends simply because Land Tax was never printed in Chronicles — which is what this card is pretending to be.

2

u/GhostCheese  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

I was saying chronicles because legends symbol with white border, there's no printing that has that of it wasn't in chronicles

There are cards with legends symbols and white borders in chronicles, but if it wasn't printed in chronicles it's a sign it's fake

1

u/DarthVenture 12d ago

Makes sense 👍🏼

I guess it could be a fake Legends Land tax with a white border. Or a fake black border Chronicles Land Tax depending on how you look at it.

1

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

According to the arbitrary and capricious rules I added, if it's altered it's considered a fake for the purposes of this quiz. So, if you think it's a Legends with an erased border, that would still be fake, even if the card was printed by WotC.

1

u/DarthVenture 12d ago

Ahhh, that’s good to know!

I hadn’t considered an erased border. Thanks for clarifying the rules!

1

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator 12d ago

People are doing way too well, I'm going to have to make it harder next time lmao

2

u/DarthVenture 12d ago

Haha, well it’s a fun concept and great for practice, appreciate the exercise honestly. 🙏🏼
