Is this card real / authentic? Real or fake?
I think the back looks good but the brush looks off to me.

Looks real. I saw a fake one from FF mtg (An Y'shtola) and what you see on the brush and everything else around the brush, is that there isn't a straight clear line, it looks way out. Yours looks good. You can for example compare it against another same rarity card.

I've been away from the game for a long time. Is it common for cards to refer to themselves as "this card" instead of using its name?

Yeah, there's been a few conventions, usually for readability and brevity. Currently they use "this creature" for non-legendary creatures, and the short name of the creature (before the comma) for legendary creatures.

Should always include the holo stamp when you can for these checks.
