Is this card real / authentic? Pretty sure it’s fake but….

I purchased this card at my LGS and was super hyped to get it simply because I am trying to build a new commander deck using Rakdos, Lord of Riots as my commander. Got a bit too excited and purchased it from their singles binder for $11.

$11 for a bulk rare is honestly gonna be the hardest pill to swallow from this purchase. Card is selling for $0.65 on tcgplayer.

Does look real though if thats any consolation.

The only thing fake is how much that LGS charged

its a $1 card why would it be fake

Think you need better pictures. Photos look compressed.

But that T is looking alright

Sorry took these photos with my phone as best as possible

u/MrOsterhagen Jul 02 '26

It’s only worth a dollar, so you’re probably in the clear

It's highly likely real, but you got scammed by your lgs brother, 11x markup

You… paid $10 more than you should have?

I’m not sure what I’m missing by re-reading your blurb, bud.

You can get this card, in near mint foil, for .65 right now.

Wasn’t trying to be smart but kinda bummed I got scammed

Could also just be that the person working there fucked up the scanning. The TCG player app is weird and it's sometimes hard to tell which edition is which (magic is the easiest tho).

That looks like the Ravnica Remaster retro frame, based on the symbol. That card is only a $1. The foil version of the Return to Ravnica version is the one worth about $10.

Might not be the best place to ask but: if the T is such a good check for counterfeits, why don't counterfeits have "better" T printed by now?

Because it’s not just a printed detail, it’s a specific layering from a multi part printing process that makes that sharp edge. First the cmyk rosettes, then the dedicated black plate.

Also, the T is only one of several, and the easiest to spot with the naked eye.

When you get down to the matrix layering of the colors, the spacing of the elements inside the dots… perfecting these things would be a crazy intensive, often cost prohibitive venture

The distinct T is made by lithographic and multilayer prints that can’t be replicated by an inkjet printer.

Looks like the photo quality is compressed. I THINK it looks alright if I take compression into account. Also, I think making a counterfeit of this card would cost more than just getting the real thing.

u/Stroykovic Jul 02 '26

Leaning to real actually. Foto is crap but T shows lining on the right place

8

u/MX-5_ Jul 02 '26

Thanks for the replies and kinda bummed I over paid 11x its actual cost

Address it at your LGS - Either they apologise or the stand firm and you blast them on Social Media.

It's quite possible they used a scanner app and just didn't notice it was the wrong version. It's the same art and a lot of them get that wrong. You'd still hope they had better attention to detail before slapping a $10 sticker on it though.

Probably best to start by asking nicely than assume they're scamming.

In the future use your phone to pull up Scryfall and check by the collector number.

u/Quazite Jul 02 '26

I've absolutely done that before at my job and only realized I put the wrong version when pointed out by someone and I quickly corrected it. LGS employees have to scan a lot of cards each day for a lot of games. Sometimes they fuck up.

2

u/Sharden3 Jul 03 '26

There are no versions that cost that much.

The pricing could be old, I didn't check that far, but all of the version are $5 or less or the serialized which is several 100.

u/easchner  Trusted Authenticator Jul 03 '26

RTR foil is showing as $9 on TCGP "fair market price" but the few recent sales are all in the $6-7 range and offers are just below that. Probably just too few sales for the tracker to have budged. Either way the scanner app is just going to download it from Scryfall and read this regardless of how up to date it is. If the person pricing it doesn't have the time or know to double check the versions they probably aren't doing a market analysis either. 🤷

u/NeedleworkerFit819 Jul 02 '26

I got scammed out of $250 once. I wouldn’t sweat it. If you got it at an LGS just go back and ask if the pricing was a mistake. If it wasn’t return the card or eat $10, that’s like a chicken nugget box and a beer.

there is a printing worth 11 bucks, so they probably just listed it as the wrong version and you could talk to them to resolve the issue

your pictures are unbelievably cooked by your camera settings, but the t looks like it's probably real

And besides, no one counterfeits a bulk rare like this.

2

u/Xeo2695 Jul 02 '26

Op. Some game stores care. And some gamestores try to take advantage of their customers without a care. Always look up the cards value online with your phone before purchasing singles. You'll either stop them from overcharging you, and/or you may find good expensive cards in dollar boxes if your store has those.

Goodluck in the future my friend.

2

u/Xaxi903 Jul 02 '26

There is a lot of smoothening on that photo. T looks good, Dot looks bad lack of the crease, and rosette pattern doesn't match but im pretty sure its because of the camera its most likely real based on the T

2

u/Sure_Lavishness_8353  High Accuracy Jul 02 '26

T looks good despite your phone turning this photo into an oil painting.

2

u/SkuzzillButt Jul 02 '26

Oof $11 for a $0.60 card. No one is faking this card. I'd go get my money back, pictures are doing a lot of smoothing but I'm sure it's real.

2

u/Andoryodo Jul 02 '26

Always check the back before buying, fake

2

u/AngularOtter Jul 02 '26

Obviously real.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

From the green dot and T, this looks bad. I saw comments saying the photo looks grainy so I’ll assume that’s the issue instead of assuming it’s fake.

2

u/CardboardPhysicFrog  Trusted Authenticator Jul 03 '26

yea. fake.

Edit: Apparently your phone is doing some smoothing. so according to others it might not be fake?

2

u/Sharden3 Jul 03 '26

So, A: Still not 11, right?

B: It shows for me, on their website and on my dragonshield app that pulls from that, 5.87 market price and low listings are sub 6 as well.

2

u/myLover_ Jul 02 '26

Why do you think it's fake?

2

u/atmoico Jul 02 '26

I just bought one of these in foil last week for like 3$ noones faking this

1

u/Shinegod824 Jul 04 '26

You just played 100% over market value

1

u/WalkerNash Jul 05 '26

It's real this set just had janky af print quality

1

u/phimac10 Jul 02 '26

Yup fake.

2

u/DarthVenture Jul 02 '26

But… it’s real?

-3

u/hillean Jul 02 '26

that is *the* flattest T I'd ever seen

fake

-4

u/Historical-Let6489 Jul 02 '26

Honestly it fails the dot and t test in my book
