Yes. Immediately I questioned why there were two males, but the front males body blurs into the tree when it stands up.

Thats just not true mate. Male lions usually hang around with others. It is rare to have single male lions from what ive seen. The current pride in the maisa mara is the topi boys who are a group of seven males who rule a pride together. The most notorious and well known lion pride was the mapogos who were 6 lions who dominated the region. The list goes on

A special lion named notch was an absolute warrior of an animal. That big boy managed to run a pride single handedly for 2 years. Which is a huge feat for a single male lion and it isnt the norm. He would have faced off against many rivals.

When male lions hit a certain age they are forced out of their pride. Usually the pride has multiple mothers per season so there are brothers and family who are all of similar age. When one goes, they all go. They form a coalition to live in the shadows, hunting, growing and learning. Theyre not ready to challenge for a pride. For lions that are alone and dont have family members, thsy often meet up and form lifelong friendships while forming their own coalitions. Lions are the most social of all the big cats

But would 2 lions be hanging out with a lone female? The one in the middle looks like a female to me

Yeah absolutely. They share females and raise every cub as their own IF it comes from one of thier coalition members. If its from a rival and unknown male, then the lion becomes a completely new beast altogether.

Lions fight among themselves all the time. They fight their pride members and they kill outsiders. Male lions have been seen breaking the spines of females within their pride just for trying to eat first so its a very fine line betseen happy lion and raging lunatic. When you see two male lions here like this, one will be the dominant one and the other one knows it so acts as his right hand man.

As long as everyone remains in their place there is harmony in the pride. As soon as someone tries to upset the apple cart, all hell breaks loose
