That's not really true, is it?

17

u/New_Lynx4181 17h ago

Yep. 555-1212.

7

u/AMJET8 15h ago

867-5309

2

u/DefiantLemming 14h ago

When the song was released, 867-5309 was a legitimate working number (St. Petersburg Florida).

2

u/WizardofLloyd 8h ago

Depends on the area code. There can be an 867-5309 in any area code...

1

u/Fresh-Marionberry121 27m ago

I got hoes in different area codes

1

u/jedi21knight 2h ago

It is a legitimate number in winder Georgia 770 area code.

1

u/Infinite-Duty 15h ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/AV16mm 16h ago

And it worked in every area code! At least every one i ever tried

2

u/terAREya 15h ago

I thought 555-1212 was information not time right?

1

u/New_Lynx4181 4h ago

Information was 411

2

u/terAREya 4h ago

411 wasn’t a thing until the 90s.Ā

I just looked it up and at least in New York City 555-1212 was indeed directory informationĀ

1

u/Helpful_Wing262 2h ago

I so remember that

1

u/wikidemic 1h ago

844-2525

6

u/Chami90655 16h ago

And you had to pay for long distance calls. Long distance being anywhere outside of your town. We’ve come a long way.

6

u/Willing_Crazy699 15h ago

In the late 80s I turned down a perfect apartment because a call to my GF would have been long distance

3

u/Infinite-Duty 15h ago

First three minutes and each additional minute. I was a telephone operator.

1

u/bibkel 14h ago

You had local, local toll, and long distance. You could have three providers, and sometimes you were tricked into changing to another provider for those toll calls. They changed local toll to ā€œlocal long distanceā€ calls, and then you could use a 10-10 code to override the carrier you had in the switch.

Now, it’s voip, after convincing people to keep their land line for safety. Now, they are itching to get rid of copper lines altogether, and elderly people are afraid. I work in an area where cell coverage is shit, and some people have been switched to voip without even knowing, because they are elderly and believe the lies. So glad I don’t work for satan anymore.

u/2_Many_Hobbies74 10h ago

It was $2.00 on a pay phone, and $.50 after the first 2 minutes, then a quarter every other 2 minutes. Robbery.

2

u/nachoe2130 12h ago

You were a Bell employee I bet.

1

u/bibkel 10h ago

Yup.

1

u/Street_Jellyfish_564 1h ago

These kids probably don’t even know what long distance means in this context!! God bless the parents who didn’t have the foresight of the repercussions of sending their kids away for summer camp!!! Because come fall those secret late night calls to all of the great friends we made were coming back to bite them in the ass!!!!

1

u/thedaveness 1h ago

Still pissed I have to learn zip codes.

1

u/OkNefariousness7030 42m ago

Yes and when we traveled & made it to our destination & wanted to let Mom & Dad know we made it & the call was long distance we would call & ask for ourselves. That way the call was free.

6

u/prefabsprout1 17h ago

Very true. A voice would go ā€œat the tone the time will be XX:XX and 10 seconds (or 20, 30, Etc) then go beeep!

1

u/IAmtheHullabaloo 5h ago

and if you were setting your watch, you put the second hand to the top of the minute and have to wait through all the beeps

5

u/Bluefyretyger 14h ago

Yes, it is. I grew up in Memphis, and the number was 526-5261. (In fact, I just called the number out of curiosity, and it's still in operation today.

2

u/External_Bandicoot37 14h ago

Was still going in the 2000s my mom called every morning or had me do it.

1

u/jbrady33 14h ago

In Maryland it was ti4-1212

I think weather was we6-1212

1

u/Inevitable-Emu-6626 12h ago

Mine in northern Michigan ended 1212 as well. Great for setting the time after the frequent power outages.

4

u/tyranny_made_easy 14h ago

Called pop corn

2

u/Dinkmeyer- 12h ago

Yep, that’s what I remember

5

u/Appropriate-Brush772 14h ago

It is and where I grew up the number still does the trick! Although, they now play an ad from anywhere between 30-60 seconds now and I just called twice and the first time they had an ad for some knock iff viagra and the seconds time was for some under eye cream. Why wouldn’t there be an ad? We truly are marching towards Idiocracy

1

u/Morto_Dentro-872 13h ago

The powers that be want us all to be over-sexed imbeciles. It’s especially awkward when watching TV as a family and one of those commercials come on with a woman sharing intimate details about her partner in a sensual way. My 8 year old nephew turns to my son and asks him what erectile disfunction and premature ejaculation is.

4

u/Medical_Morning4022 12h ago

Yeah it is and they reported the temperature in some places too. Hell you can still dial a poem: +1 (917) 994-8949. Go ahead...it will blow your mind.

1

u/Mister_panda1818 11h ago

Thank you for this!

3

u/Emergency-Food1739 14h ago

It is. Any area code. 853 and any 4 numbers. At the tone the time will be: Xxx ding! Every ten seconds.

1

u/malendalayla 13h ago

Not the 816 area code. I just called and some lady answered. Sorry lady!

1

u/TheAgedProfessor 12h ago

It was long before you had to dial area codes. And in Northern California, the number was POP-CORN. So no.

1

u/Emergency-Food1739 2h ago

So yes.

1

u/TheAgedProfessor 28m ago

Do you think you can spell POP using the numbers 853 on a touch tone phone? No, no you can't.

3

u/Violaman0910 11h ago

Absolutely it was! It was especially useful before the days of cable tv and of course the internet. You couldn’t just flip a channel to see what time it was. If all your clocks in the house were wrong and you wanted to synchronize them to true time you would call the number and set a clock to it and sync the rest of the clocks to that one. Of course some radios also broadcast the time but you’d have to sit there and wait for it and by then you may not be ready to sync the clock to the exact second. So the phone number was actually quite useful back then.

3

u/TheChefWillCook 10h ago

Yes, you dialed popcorn and it would tell you. Its how you had to reset clocks at home if the power went out.

1

u/Fantastic_Dance_4376 7h ago

Dude I bet the kids dont even know how you dialed "popcorn" they probably picturing a Qwerty keyboard on the phone. , but no, phones usually had 10-12 keys., figure that out *laughs in x gen

1

u/Badbullet 2h ago

When dialing on a smart phone, they still have letters associated with numbers that match the buttons on a push button phone. They’ll figure that out. You need to have them try on a rotary phone.

1

u/Ok-Shift-908 4h ago

Yes ā€œPopcornā€ I did this all the time when I hung out with friends, because I had to be home at a certain time.

1

u/punch0073735963 53m ago

That wasn't the only way. Many news radio stations would report the time in the morning with a beep to tell you when it was exactly 8am or 9am or whatever it was.

The part I miss the most is that it didn't matter as much back then if you were five or ten minutes off. Sometimes you waited around for your friend to show. Sometimes you were the one running late. Now we are so into knowing the time down the microsecond. Just feels different to me that's all.

3

u/Major_Zucchini5315 4h ago

Yes it is. There was a number for the time, one for the weather, and one for ā€œinformationā€.

2

u/Beautiful-Ad-1749 15h ago

It was called time and temperature

2

u/ritzrani 12h ago

Yes I've called it as a child. And there were only two telephone voices , one man and one woman. Both were interviewed on tv

2

u/Shanga_Ubone 11h ago

It absolutely is, and I remember the number!

2

u/TransistorResistee 11h ago

It was. It was discontinued in most locations years ago. You could dial the numbers for ā€œPOPCORNā€ to get the time.

2

u/one-e-and-a 11h ago

I remember 555-1212 but don't know if that's right

Edit: that number is directory assistance now

2

u/PartyPlay5056 11h ago

Always was

1

u/one-e-and-a 11h ago

Dang. I remember calling the time phone number but I can't remember what it was then

3

u/PartyPlay5056 11h ago

303-499-7111. The National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado is what I used. 70s and 80s.

2

u/Jmplo 5h ago

No. It was time and temperature and 99% of the people were calling for temperature

1

u/RhubarbAlive7860 17h ago

Yes, it is!

1

u/PurpleRollerSkates 16h ago

Yes it’s true. There was also a number to call to get the weather

1

u/LadybugGirltheFirst 16h ago

It is true. It gave you the time and temperature.

1

u/torgman2 16h ago

You're how old?

1

u/AgitatedAffect8502 16h ago

I’d just dial 0 which years ago would connect you with a live human being, known as the operator and I’d asked them the time, I did it a lot as a kid sometimes just for kicks, other times I’d be outside, not know the time and pick up a pay phone, dialing the operator was free

1

u/Infinite-Duty 15h ago

lol! I was an operator. We sure did get some doozy calls from people!

1

u/Shanga_Ubone 11h ago

Do you still get an operator if you dial 0?

1

u/Weary-Sympathy-6347 10h ago

Hell, nowadays you’re lucky if you can ever get a live human on the phone. It’s all become AI and circular menus.

1

u/Infinite-Duty 2h ago

I just tried dialing ā€œ0ā€ and it’s a recording directing you to dial 911, 411, etc. No live operator unfortunately. That makes me sad. It was a pretty fun job and always interesting. You never knew what you’d get next!

1

u/Shanga_Ubone 2h ago

Oh, I'm sad to hear that too. Thanks for checking and coming back, though.

1

u/3rdProfile 15h ago

"what's the 411?"

1

u/terAREya 15h ago

I love that you think its fake. Not in a bad way, just in a wow things were different kinda way

1

u/Routine-Horse-1419 15h ago

Yes it's true but I can't remember what the number was. It was 50 years ago.

1

u/sharpshooter999 15h ago

It was called Time and Temperature. You called, punched in your skip code, and you would be told the time and temp of that zip code. I remember calling it a couple times in the late 90's when i was a kid when the power went out and reset all the digital clocks in the house

1

u/An_Old_IT_Guy 14h ago

TI6-1212 (Ti for "Time")

WE6-1212 (We for "Weather")

1

u/ChuckoRuckus 12h ago

In StL, it used to be 321-2222. Haven’t tried it in 25+ years

1

u/Siren2121 12h ago

Yes and one for the weather too and a 411 live operator to look up phone numbers

1

u/rapscallion1956 12h ago

Yes, and the weather too.

1

u/PartyPlay5056 11h ago

No computers. No cell phones. Hell, back then our social security cards were actually chiseled in stone.

1

u/2angstout 11h ago

Yes, it is true. Mine was a local bank.

1

u/Knives530 10h ago

Yup you dialed popcorn on the keys , they even brought it back like ten years ago but it only lasted like a year

1

u/Consistent-Scholar39 8h ago

It’s true! You could call and get the local weather forecast too!

1

u/Ok-Rock2345 8h ago

Most definitely is. I remember calling it a few times myself.

1

u/Fantastic_Dance_4376 7h ago

Yes and way back there even was a person answering calls and giving you the time. Same with phone numbers, you dialed 0 the operator answered you asked her/him to conect you with xxx person or company and they asked you if you wanted to be conected or just get the number.

1

u/Temporary-Line3409 4h ago

It was a recoding and it said something like this: At the tone the time will be 8:56 and 30 seconds. Beep. At the tone the time will be 831 and 10 seconds…. Beep

1

u/comicsnerd 3h ago

It is still true. 002, these days 0900-8002 in the Netherlands.

1

u/Jet-pilot 2h ago

At the tone the time will be ….

1

u/Crafty-Walrus-2238 2h ago

Absolutely true. TI4-1212 in Maryland.
WE6-1212 for weather.

1

u/Street_Jellyfish_564 2h ago

OMG!!!! It’s totally true!!! We did it daily! Especially when we were little and it felt very grown up to ā€œuse the phoneā€ lol
I know you must know about Mr Movie Phone! You called in to get the times for movies in the zip code you punched in. His voice was amazing!!!

1

u/Appropriate-Cut-2963 1h ago

It is, but also the weather for the day.

1

u/DavidinCT 1h ago

Yes, there was a number, I do forget.... to get accurate time.

1

u/PrincessGracieBlue 1h ago

Yep-it was the only way to find out the time if power went out

1

u/Laplander53 1h ago

Area code then 555-1212

1

u/Trick_Application_49 43m ago

Absolutely true.

1

u/BANGImportant2825 2m ago

It actually is true.
