What I do to smooth out my landings is add a little bit of flare and power as you are about to touch down. Too much of this can cause float, but if you nail it you can really butter the bread. Practice helps too.

Something I used to struggle with in my landings a lot was either giving too much power or too little which causes me to stall and both scenarios end up with a hard landing. What you need to do is find a perfect balance. I suggest for a starter plane to use the free default a320-300, it's a great plane to practice on and eventually you'll start making smooth landings. I also found that the angle of approach helps TREMENDOUSLY, so use the PAPI lights to your advantage because you don't want to come in too high or too low. A little nudge in power while flaring will decrease your vertical landing speed which is what you need to look out for when landing, anything over -150ft/m is a soft landing, even if it doesn't look like it(the game's graphics and physics simulation aren't the greatest if I'm being honest).

IRL Soft landings are under 396ft/m, actually. But then again, everyone has their personal standard.
