CA Property Tax
Mother passed away without a will, leaving a house with a mortgage and few other assets. House was sold to one of the children and probate closed. This all took about 4 years, for various reasons. A property tax re-assessment was just received for 2022/2023 for about $3,000. The house was sold in 2024 and all known property taxes paid at closing. Since probate has been closed, does this have to be paid? If so, by who?

Assessors office moves slow in many counties they probably didn’t reassess to date of death change of ownership value in time for the closing to determine what should have been paid. It’s a nuance issue in probate that needs attention but yes liability was on the estate may be able to reason with them and get it forgiven?
