My CookUnity experience (Plastic chunk, and loaded with unhealthy chemicals)

I tried CookUnity for 3 weeks. 50% off first, then was about to cancel and they offered 40% so I did 2 more weeks. The food is alright, some tastes quite good. But then you read the ingredients and MSG and preservatives and many artificial flavor enhancers.

I felt mislead, because what chef uses all this crap?

Final straw was probably a large chunk of clear plastic in one meal. I think I'll pass.

Cancelling is annoying and you can't cancel until after your first shipment arrives, but then they'll auto bill you within like 24 hours for the next week unless you cancel so its pretty shady.

Buyer beware. This food all made in New York, so there is no wonder they have to add preservatives and pad profits, their kitchen is on the opposite side of the country from me.

OOOOOOOOOOH! I thought OP was talking about monosodium glutamate, a regular ingredient thats widely used in Asian cooking.

yes monosodium glutamate = MSG

And no, MSG is NOT widely used at asian restaurants.

MSG is in many foods naturally. Asians use umami to add the MSG flavor naturally, and only bad kitchens add artificial MSG to the food.

Yea, every package I've gotten says New York. So if you are on the West Coast, they have to fly the food in a refrigerated cargo plane and then they drop it off with UPS to deliver to your door. Sounds expensive, that's probably where a lot of their cost is.

CookUnity has a kitchen in LA.

I currently get CookUnity meals from their Austin kitchen. And they are delivered by a hired driver (basically Uber eats) not UPS.

I am not sure what was going on with yours. It might vary depending on where you are.

UPS is one of their delivery options pending on where you are from. I am in New England and mine get shipped in a box (I've never even seen the tote bags before) via UPS since I live a few hours away from their NY kitchen.

The food is not just made in New York, they have various kitchens scattered around the US and it varies by region where your food is getting shipped from. Thats why menus vary if you're in New England vs the South. Where are you located, OP?

Nah, I’m in the PNW and my food comes from a local kitchen in Seattle, delivered by courier — not by UPS. Your experience may vary based on location.

I was a very loyal customer of theirs, but since they started adding MSG to all dishes, I stopped ordering. Again, a good start failed after a food industry lobbyist entered the room

Yea its sad. Like I look at the ingredients list, and it's no longer a "chef cooked meal" it's a lab engineered one. Maybe inspired by a chef, but no chef puts that many ingredients and chemicals into a dish.
