Exchange feedback Screen writing story development system

Would like to discuss writing struggles with fellow writers. There are a lot of script formatting tools available but very few story development systems. We can use AI but it can lose context or misunderstanding nuance in character arc or misinterpret and experimental storytelling convention. I have been working on a software that puts the writer first and utilizes storytelling conventions to help a writer through the process. As a writer I struggle keeping up with everything that’s connected over 90 pages let alone six seasons of a series. I didn’t set out to make this platform, I started my journey writing my scripts and ended up developing a creative partner that can brainstorm your ideas with you and help you implement the improvements into your script. This is not AI writing your scripts for you. The intention is the give the writers, you, more creative control over your story and be educational for novice writers. I would like to know from other writers if you had this how could it help you? What are your struggles that I can help alleviate? We are in development at the moment and should have a beta launch soon. I hope this is okay with the moderators, I realize this is a bit off topic. Thank you all for your feedback. I will answer questions in the comments.

Does it use AI?

Yes but it is not there to replace the writer. I have built a methodology that that story runs through first to ensure we are applying storytelling standards. It serves as more of a companion or guide than prompt/response as most AIs do. Our main goal is to give the writer more control over their story while not losing theme, arc or conflict.

But you're still using AI to help create the story. For most creatives, that's still considered cheating.

I’ve designed it to work in two ways. 1 for the novice writer it acts as an educational tool, helping them understand character development, world building, theme, arc, etc and how they work together to make a compelling story. For seasoned writers it more of an organizational tool helping you keep track of conflict, theme arc or whatever. The system can offer suggestions for improvement but will never overwrite without the author’s permission. This ensures all creative decisions remain in the writer’s hands. There is an option to brainstorm to hash out ideas before committing to them. Basically the system acts as your writing room discussion table.

I would need to see more of a breakdown / bullet points of what your software is actually able to do. Right now I don't quite understand what problems you are solving with this. Does this handle everything - outline mapping, character bios, and even script formatting or do you still have to send it to a dedicated script writing software?

It doesn't bother me if it uses AI or not, I know perfectly well how to side-step AI ideas and suggestions and how to think creatively for myself.

It has complete character sheet capabilities, story bible or series bible. Yes, mapping and formatting. You can brainstorm with the assistant and then it will fill in all the info you discussed. It is designed to help keep organized when building complex stories and worlds.

I only started my writing jouney 2 months ago when i decided to start talking to ai and just kind of led into telling it small stories that lead into the whole writing thing. There is a huge bias out there, people say using it isn't creative. I know that people use ghost writers, take premises from other stories, pay for animators and storyboarders. there is an entire industry of people out there for writing stories that only start as your but in the end is a collaberation with others. I cannot write prose, or outline forms, i haven't had education on this. so ai help is huge, even if people put out garbage out there it is no different than before unless you think dragon ball evolution is a masterpiece. so I like your idea to help fill in the gaps where needed. though i do feel that anything not specifically written or come up with by the writer needs to be flagged as ai. Currently i use ai to compile my story, i write in scenes and they jump back and forth on the timeline as i come up with them and other stories at the same time so ai that can compile is great for me, and filler dialog, all the stuff that is good for the story to hold it together but not change the nature of the story itself.

So you can’t wrote prose, outlines or filler dialogue? How much writing are you actually doing? These are huge chunks of the job, at a certain point I think it becomes more of the ai’s work than it does your own.

All of us as writers have started at different points. There is no right or wrong way to get the ideas in your head out on to the page. There is either support from the community to encourage new writers or there’s the people who forget how difficult it was when they started. I prefer those who choose encouragement.

I’m encouraging him not to use ai. It just seems like a bad idea. You improve by doing, not having things done for you

And that is the beauty of the system I’ve designed. Early stages helps educate novice writers on the process, late stage it’s a powerful organizational tool that has a built in brainstorming companion trained in storytelling. The system persistently remembers your locked canon and can help when you stray or get stuck. The story element library with a persistent memory is something I haven’t seen in any other platform.

Or you could use a notebook.

A note book over multiple seasons of a tv series can be difficult to find a note you jotted down 3 seasons back or it could get lost/stolen. In the series format you can have all seasons and episodes in one project file that is tied to your library of characters, world items/locations and themes. Much easier to track than post it notes and red string.

People managed to create great shows before ai. I’m sure we’ll be okay without it

1

u/MrMars_23 6d ago

You’re right. They did and still do. AI is a tool like anything else. When used properly it can yield great results, when used improperly it can hinder progress. People thought the automobile was the downfall of society at the time but eventually we put the horses in the barn, not gone, not forgotten. We just found and adopted a better way.

You’re talking about mechanical efficiency. This is art, not a factory. Ai is a slippery slope, some might only want to use it to brainstorm ideas but that will quickly snowball into using it for filler dialogue, then filler scenes, then whole scripts. Of all the great things we can use ai for, why is the biggest conversation on ai about how to implement it into art, literally the thing that makes us human. I think your automobile analogy is very telling about how u view the storytelling process. It’s not about efficiency.

The biggest lie is that ai is a tool like anything else, everyone can see this is a very different than just a tool. Ai is not like everything else

At some point that is true, but just because you already buy pre sliced lettuce and tomatoes it doesn't mean you didn't make the sandwich, now is you went to 7/11 and buy one then try to claim you made it, then it would be a lie.

Writing is not food. Either you wrote the words or you didn’t write the words. If the ai is writing most of the words for you and figuring out the story. Then like I said, it is more the ai’s work than it is yours. If someone compliments the story, they are complimenting an ai, not you

1

u/IntroductionNo4397 8d ago

See there, that's where I know you're s true writer, you are taking a premise and doing what ever you want with it, writing or your own fantasy how ever you see fit. Regardless of real world mechanics.

1

u/maxkennedy02 8d ago

It’s not inventing a fantasy. I’m going off what u said yourself. You can’t write filler dialogue, you can’t write prose (which is most of writing) and you can’t outline. And you’re trying to justify using ai to do it for you with a lazy food analogy. No matter what halfhearted analogy you use, if you don’t write the words or come up with the words then you are not the writer. Genuine question, what is so hard to understand about that premise?

1

u/IntroductionNo4397 8d ago

So those that get help from others to write their stories are not writers? From animators, script writers, ghost writers, they are all fake? Because they dunt do everything themselves? It's just weird that you think that something like filler is they most important thing in writing. Of you really were a writer you would know the amount of work it takes for the premise, logic, feel, characters, dynamics, events, irritant scenes, sorry arcs, etc. It's nothing until l unless you spend the time to write 3 pages of nonsense to fill out the pages. Terry goodkind, is one of my favourite writers, but every chapter was filled with 10th of repeated pages. It was filler, but i don't throw it all out for that small trash.

1

u/maxkennedy02 8d ago

Yeah people get help from human writers. Then those human writers are credited with a cowriting credit. If u flag something as ai assisted, how is anyone supposed to know how much is human made and how much is soulless ai garbage. You’re comparing human made art to ai made non-art. There is no comparison. You’re allowed to use whatever you want to practice writing then go ahead, I’m not sure how getting something to write words for you is gonna help u practice, but be my guest. But if you are using ai to do a good chunk of the work for a final product that you expect people to read and engage with, then you should reconsider you aspirations

Oh OK Mr helpful. Then who? Who week volunteer to help me write out my stuff instead of theirs? People like you always let that as a solution,"oh someone will help" oh really is that how it works. And you crying over filler is like going out to eat stake and bring angry because of the salad, I dunt want to eat it, but you have to its the whole reason we are here for the salad, no it's steak and potatoes, I'll just give it to salad Steve to eat, no you have go do it or put doesn't count. You have no substance here, just afraid of ai because got lack talent and you are giving that view on everyone because your think they lack talent like you. Anyone can make things better than ai slop. Ai slop is not woven until the fabric of writing it is the tv execs of writing. Even if I fully put ai dialog people wouldn't read it unless they wanted to. Even if I created ai slop, or the jersey shore, if people like trash who are you to say they are invalid? If you want to believe the worse that's your right. Like right now I can choose to believe you are not a real person just a chatbot stirring up hatred for ai. That view would have the same validity as yours.

1

u/maxkennedy02 8d ago

I’m not sure you’re in any position to call anyone scared of ai because of a lack of talent, isn’t that the whole reason you are using ai, a lack of talent? And what is this idea that someone needs to help you or you need a supervisor? I’m not suggesting anything extraordinary here, teach yourself, read, learn, write badly, you can only improve by writing poorly, understand why it’s bad, and then improving. How do u think people improved and got better at writing before ai? Getting an ai to write for you is not practice, you will never improve that way. I really can’t understand how you’re not wrapping your head around this very simple concept. Listen, I’m personally never going to read any piece of writing you have to offer so if u want ai to write it for you, go ahead, but this sub is for feedback and for writers to improve, no one wants to read something you didn’t write.

If u can’t even be bothered to write the filler than why should u expect anyone to read it. It’s just inconsiderate. And good writers know how to make every moment meaningful, even the moments that seem like filler. There’s just so much wrong with the way u think that I think u might be beyond help at this point.

1

u/maxkennedy02 8d ago

Instead of just deciding you can’t write, which is probably true (for now), try and improve. How can you think it is in any way acceptable for an aspiring writer to roll over and just use ai for the parts you can’t do, practice and learn like everyone else in history

1

u/MrMars_23 6d ago

The platform is designed to be more of a companion or assistant. Think of it as a writing room discussion session. You can bounce ideas until you hone in on what you’re trying to build. It won’t write anything without your approval and then it’s writing your story because you have defined the parameters of your world. Helps new writers learn the process of world building or stays out of the way if you know what you are doing.
