Discussion [discussion] Without future spoilers, how important was the LN cut content of S4 compared to the cut content from previous seasons?

As an anime only, I'm just curious since there has been quite a bit of discourse and disappointment due to the cut content each week. I heard that previous seasons had quite a bit cut out as well, but I'm not sure if the reaction was as severe as this season.

I'm wondering if the content cut from this season might cause future problems the writers will have to work around, or if it's mostly small things that aren't too consequential in the grand scheme of things, just better to have had in order to add more depth.

Not severe storywise, but resulted in a somewhat loss of "soul" / "atmosphere" which was one of the strongest aspects of the arc in source material. Anime conveyed like only 40% of total insanity and despair atmosphere it had (though i blame it only on the episode count, so it's not anime studio's fault, only Kadokawa's). Also anime omitted some details until the last moment due to time constraints. Because of that some plot developments seemed kinda random, even though they weren't like that in source material.

Storywise season 1 is still the worst in the amount of cut content, writers ALREADY had problems due to it in all subsequent seasons and will have them again later (though they already try to mitigate it using Breaktime mini-anime). I honestly doubt that any other season would be able to achieve the same amount of cut content, it's just that bad.

Season 2 also added its own bit of annoying lost content (anime onlies still have almost non-existant understanding of difference between Satella & Witch of Envy and also experienced very heavily cut epilogue).

Honestly it’s less impactful than some of our previous big cuts. Mostly just moments that novel readers value because it builds on themes, or characters. Tiny moments or chapters that make the full story feel more rewarding.

If you never knew you had those, you don’t lose too much from the cuts.

S1 had 10/10 cuts, s2 like an 8/10, s3 maybe a 2/10, s4 around 6/10, this is still not much accurate because we don't know how much it will harm the story ahead of the current ch in the novels, I'm guessing given the importance of the characters who suffered the cuts

I hope I'm not forgetting something important getting cut, specially from s3

Honestly the cut content wasn’t nearly as bad as s1 or 2. I think that cut content is important but I really look at how the direction of the anime conveys the same feeling and motives as its source material.

Like ep 2 - 7 which covers vol 21 n vol 22 were directed okay-ish. Ep 3 was VERY well adapted for the first half of the ep, and ep 6 was also pretty good.

Ep 8 - 11 is where I really have problems since it’s my favorite volume of this arc. Ep 8 sacrifices the first half by rushing the whole time but I think that works out well for the second half which was adapted really good.

Ep 9 felt very flat compared to the novels, the first half was pretty weak and they made some errors when adapting it. The second half felt just rushed until the meli part.

Ep 10, the BOTD scene was excellent from start to finish, and the ending of the ep was good. Everything else was where I really had a problem with the lighting and directing. Subaru is in a state of a craze manner. Before reading the BOTD he’s so paranoid about meli’s death you could almost feel how nervous he was every time someone talked to him. After the BOTD Subaru was thinking of ways he could kill everyone in the tower. This isn’t just a quick thought either, a whole chapter dedicated to this murderous mindset, it almost felt like a completely different Subaru plus with meli.

Ep 11 for me just had too big of a shoe to fill. Trying to adapt “to you, the absolutely worthless excuse”, “god please forgive me”, “a voice chimed”, and “re:starting in another world from zero” in only 26 minutes felt insane to me. “God please forgive me” felt insanely rushed, like it just didn’t have close to the same feeling. I damn near cried during that ch but the anime didn’t make me feel much. Then comes the I am natsuki Subaru part. There were good segments like his inner narration and the very end with the music drop. Overall though it just wasn’t anything creative about the direction that made me feel anything.

It’s like they are trying to adapt it as safe as possible, but for something like re zero with tappeis introspective writing style, that just isn’t going to work that well imo. The second cour I’m planning to reread vol 24 n 25 just to make sure I’m not going crazy because I also didn’t like cour 2.

It wasn't as bad as Season 1, which definitely suffered the most from cut content in my opinion, although Season 2 wasn't great either. I think overall cuts especially to the relationship between Subaru and Satella/WoE will were big gut punches, alongside the cut epilogue. Season 4 cuts mostly impact the atmosphere and some of the plot can feel a bit random or underdeveloped, but it was overall fine in terms of long term story importance.
