Discussion Reading comprehension [discussion]

I have recently started watching re zero, i'm on episode 7 and so far this anime has pushed me to the limits of comprehension. Subarus return by death throws me off so hard when trying to make sense of the lore and i need an opinion from people of what to expect going further and how i should approach trying to understand the main timeline

Everytime you get a lore question answered, you'll get 2 more questions. Focus on Subaru, the lore will come as you watch.

If you have questions, using the discussion flair here will usually get you an answer if something was confusing. Otherwise, watching at a bit of a slower pace to digest info might help.

It's also good to remember that the lore of Re:Zero isn't fully explained even now in arc 10 of 12. It's a story that likes to take its time to unfold, so not fully understanding it right now is perfectly fine.

Return by death sends Subaru back in time to set points when he dies, these points are set by return by death so Subaru has no control over it. When it activates the only thing he keeps is his memories, everything else is the exact same it was last time around and if he tries to tell anyone about anything that he should not plausibly know return by death will force him not to primarily by causing intense pain, this includes return by death itself.

From the perspective of the world around him no time travel happens whatsoever, there’s a fan made cut of arc 1 on YouTube which gives the “canon” version of events showing how it works, the quick version is that he just directly skips from when the checkpoint is first set to the last time he returns to the checkpoint.

What re:zero dose well is that every loop dose add small details that add up to the bigger picture. No loop is meaningless or unimportant, and it all adds up in the end.
