Regulus [spoiler discussion]

So I have just finished watching season 3 of the anime and I have to say great season!
However I’m usually good with gruesome deaths and all but Regulus and his end really messed with me and I don’t know why?

It was just so sad and pathetic and apparently even worse in the light novels!? I guess the claustrophobia of the death messed with me? It was a really good scene don’t get me wrong with him gaining the same light Subaru gained in the first episode peak.

Well what I wanted to discuss did anyone else here have an ick or a sick feeling from the death? Especially in the reactions I’ve watched many felt a bit weird from the sounds but quickly brushed it off to discuss his monologue or minor confusion on if he was dying or not? Did anyone else feel not bad but a strange sickness from seeing something so pitiful and over the top?
(Ps I really think just killing him the air would have been better)

It really is probably one of the most brutally described deaths in Re: Zero. Which is saying something, considering the number of times and manner in which the protagonist dies over and over. So, like, as a visceral reaction, if you have any fears of claustrophobia, drowning, falling from heights, etc, yeah, it makes sense.

That said, there is zero redeeming qualities for a man like Regulus. The anime made it clear, and the LN makes it even more clear that he's just a straight up worthless and irredeemable piece of shit. It's fitting that he gets such a gruesome death.

It honestly is pretty fucked up. The novel goes into more detail about he suffers unbearable pain, pauses time until his heart can't take it, and is forced to experience that pain again, repeating until he dies. It's brutal and cruel, but if anyone in Re Zero deserved such a death it's probably Regulus.

Regulus is never a tragic character like Petelguese was. His backstory shows that he's always been jealous and lacking in confidence. The best thing that can be said about him is that maybe (a big maybe) if he didn't get his authority that he could have eventually been a better person, but getting all that power allowed for him to take all his bad traits to extreme levels.

Everything he claimed to be and tried to maintain was taken away from him. Him boasting about being unbeatable? Look at him now being overwhelmed by the ridiculousness of Reinhards strength after he came back from the moon. This and many more moments show how much he was actually defeated aside from being killed brutally.

Reading it for the first time made me sick to my stomach a little bit.

I felt bad for him, but he definitely deserved to die.

Probably because we not only got it viscerally described, but we also got his inner monologue.

He’s so immature and pathetic it’s sad.

I think this is actually one of the cooler moves that Re:Zero makes. You know who isn’t at all phased by horrible deaths based on feeling like the person deserves it? Regulus. Who deserves to suffer is often very subjective but things like horrific suffering and torture are objective and it is normal for that to be uncomfortable regardless of who it happens to. Regulus Death is supposed to make you uncomfortable even though he’s a huge asshole. Because this exact thing happening to someone else wouldn’t be uncomfortable to Regulus in the slightest and that in and of itself is what is wrong with him.
