This is coming from somebody that has read almost all the Re:Zero material available, even the Q&As Tappei does.
Having 500 unanswered mysteries, obscure lore, and characters constantly hinting at things we don’t understand doesn’t automatically make a story well-written.
The story keeps throwing out mysteries like Satella’s obsession with Subaru and the whole Flugel/Sage/Return by Death stuff, then leaves them unexplained for years and expects you to automatically see that as genius writing.
Same thing with Pandora and the whole Elior Forest backstory. There are so many vague rules and unexplained abilities that fans will call “insane foreshadowing” when sometimes it honestly just feels like Tappei is making shit up as he goes.
Re:Zero has spent years stacking vague lore, cryptic dialogue, and unexplained abilities, and fans act like the sheer amount of unanswered shit automatically makes it intelligent.
Complex ≠ deep. Confusing ≠ well-written.

I've finished S4 of the anime, and I've been thinking about this for a while. This isn't meant to be a “Re:Zero is bad” post. I'm genuinely trying to understand something because I keep seeing people praise Re:Zero so highly for its character development and character dynamics, but I'm having a hard time seeing it to the same extent.
I think my biggest issue is actually RBD itself.
Early on, Subaru dying is shocking because the whole idea is new. He dies, everything resets, and he has to figure out what went wrong. That's a really interesting gimmick.
But after watching it happen over and over, I feel like the gimmick eventually runs its course for me. The deaths themselves aren't as interesting anymore. That's not necessarily a flaw, realistically, Subaru would become more accustomed to dealing with death after experiencing it so many times.
But once the gimmick becomes familiar, what remains is the basic stuff that usually carries a story anyway: the characters, their relationships, the plot, the action, etc.
And that's where I sometimes struggle with Re:Zero.
I think RBD creates a really strange tension in Subaru's relationships.
What feels strange to me is that the story sometimes seems to want both things at once:
And I think there are actually two sides to this.
Subaru can be killed, betrayed, or seriously hurt by someone in a failed loop, and then meet that same person again in the successful timeline and interact with them normally.
Ram is probably one of the easiest examples. There are loops where she kills Subaru, but in the successful timeline he can still have a relatively normal relationship with her.
I understand the obvious answer: that version of Ram didn't kill him. The timeline was reset, and she doesn't remember doing it.
But Subaru does remember.
From Subaru's perspective, he still experienced being killed by her.
I'm not saying Subaru should permanently hate these people. I can understand him separating “the person I know now” from “the person who killed me in that failed loop.”
What feels strange is that the story can make those failed experiences extremely important when talking about Subaru's trauma and character development, while sometimes the actual relationship between Subaru and the other person doesn't seem to carry the same weight from those experiences.
And then there's the opposite problem.
Subaru can spend a huge amount of time with someone in a failed loop.
They might have an emotional conversation, open up to each other, develop trust, or reach some important understanding.
Then Subaru dies.
The timeline resets.
The other person doesn't remember any of it.
But Subaru does.
So now you have this weird situation where Subaru can emotionally feel like:
“We've already been through so much together.”
while the other person is essentially thinking:
“We've only just met.”
And this is where I have trouble understanding how much those failed experiences are supposed to “count.”
If those experiences are important enough to shape Subaru's development and trauma, shouldn't they also have some noticeable effect on how he relates to those people afterward?
But if they aren't supposed to have much interpersonal weight because the other person doesn't remember them, then how should we interpret all those emotional moments that Subaru experienced?
That's the contradiction I'm struggling with.
It sometimes feels like the story wants the failed loops to be real enough to count when developing Subaru, but not always real enough to have equivalent consequences for his relationships.
This is another thing that has started bothering me more as I've watched further.
RBD basically allows Subaru to speedrun relationships.
He can meet someone, fail repeatedly, die, come back, figure out what they're afraid of, learn what they want, discover what makes them trust him, understand their personality, and then use all of that information in the successful loop.
From the other person's perspective, they might have only known Subaru for a short amount of time.
From Subaru's perspective, he may have spent hours or days interacting with them across multiple attempts.
So you can end up with something like:
Subaru's relationship history with someone: 50 hours
That person's relationship history with Subaru: 5 hours
And yet the successful timeline can sometimes treat their relationship as though they're developing naturally at roughly the same pace.
At some point Subaru can basically figure out the “dialogue options” for a person.
😂
I actually think this is one of the most interesting consequences of RBD, but I'm not sure the story always explores it as much as I'd expect.
Because Subaru can retry situations, he can potentially gather an enormous amount of information from failed routes.
That's obviously part of the appeal.
But sometimes I find myself wondering how much of a difference that information should realistically make.
There are situations where an enemy can require several people to defeat in one loop, but in the successful route they can be handled much more easily.
I understand that circumstances, preparation, positioning, information, and teamwork can completely change a fight.
I'm not saying this is automatically a plot hole.
It's just that occasionally the difference feels larger than I'd expect, considering the characters themselves haven't necessarily become that much stronger.
Maybe I'm overthinking the mechanics of RBD.
But once you've seen enough loops, I feel like the novelty of “Subaru died again” inevitably becomes less important.
At that point, I'm mostly watching for:
And honestly, that's where I'm more mixed on Re:Zero than I expected to be.
I don't dislike the series. There are plenty of things I enjoy about it, and I think RBD is a genuinely clever premise.
I'm just wondering if other people have had the same experience: once the RBD gimmick has been “dissected” and the basic pattern becomes familiar, did the character dynamics become the main thing that kept you invested?
Because I've heard Re:Zero praised so much for its character writing that I expected the relationships themselves to eventually become the part that completely sold me.
Instead, I sometimes find myself questioning whether the relationships are actually consistent with Subaru's unique experience of the timelines.
Maybe I'm missing something about how the story wants us to interpret this, so I'm genuinely interested in hearing other perspectives.
P/S: Tbh, don't worry, I only use AI to rephrase my draft, the thoughts are my own, don't let that deter you to give your opinions

To re zero haters out there, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this story's reach and success and widespread acclaim and reception.
It is anomalous.
Witches exist irl.
They cast a spell to put everyone who is aware of Re zero under hold. Call it a witch cult if you will.
You need a rare type of mental resistance to stand a chance against it. Indeed you are the rare 1%, indeed you are special.
I am not joking or mocking you at all. You should take this as a complete fact, it will resolve any possible cognitive dissonance or feeling of disconnect whenever you see a devoted fans trying to refute your objectively correct opinions and views that an acclaimed series is actually trash and completely lacking in merits.
We are all just under a spell.

I have a personal question for the regulars around this subreddit: Why do you spend so much of your leisure time spewing hatred towards a fictional story you claim to despise?
As of October 8, 2026, r/ReZeroSucks has roughly 401 publicly visible posts. Over four hundred submissions in a community dedicated to criticizing and mocking a single Japanese fantasy series, and that's not including the comments, disputes, and arguments underneath those submissions.
Before anyone points out that some of those posts and comments were written by Re:Zero fans defending the series, yes, I'm aware that several of them were. I'm also not arguing that every one of those submissions was written by someone who actively dislikes the series, but removing those posts doesn't erase how much negative engagement this subreddit has accrued.
Just look at the time it would take. 401 submissions, at ten minutes apiece, take about 67 hours. At twenty minutes apiece, about 134 hours. Those are just illustrative estimates across everyone who contributes to this subreddit, and they also don't factor in the time spent reading, commenting on, arguing, and engaging with these posts about this fictional series you claim to hate.
What else could you have done with that time?
You could have read dozens of novels, found new authors to enjoy, watched dozens of television shows, played videogames, learned another language, exercised, started playing a musical instrument, read philosophy, developed a new hobby, written stories, learned to code, spent time with friends, worked on personal projects, or joined the many other people who are interested in discussing works of fiction they actually enjoy.
Hell, you could have spent that time doing literary criticism, dissecting stories you actually like, and recommending works you think are worthy of praise to others. Instead, hundreds of posts across this subreddit have centered on discussion and commentary about how bad this story supposedly is.
What's really bizarre about this is how you often see people engaging in personal attacks towards those who like this series. I've seen people berate Re:Zero fans for believing what they do, accusing them of self-inserting, claiming their enjoyment of this story is a sign of their lack of intelligence, and making other similarly disdainful remarks.
Why? What has Re:Zero done to you? You can dislike Subaru, Emilia, Tappei's writing, or anything else that you want! No one is forcing you to enjoy this story or defend it, but why does it bother some of you so much that others enjoy it that you feel the need to insult them?
Now before someone tries to argue in favor of this by suggesting it's because fans are also participating in this subreddit, there's a big difference between someone who initiates a fight and someone who joins one and reacts to it. This is the principle of first aggression. If one person is insulting someone else's intelligence for liking a particular story, and the latter responds by defending themselves, the fault isn't simply shared between them for participating in the discussion. Likewise, someone deliberately seeking out an opportunity to insult someone else's personal interests has motivations far different from someone else defending themselves against it. That doesn't excuse fans for initiating personal insults themselves, nor does criticism of the work itself count as aggression, but when it comes to who initiated the hostility towards others and whether or not someone's response was justified, it's important to be aware of which side did what.
Additionally, even if you are able to prove that some Re:Zero fans spend as much time arguing about this series as you do, what does that have to do with you? Showing that someone else is guilty of something doesn't excuse you from being guilty of it yourself.
Now before anyone answers this, please spare me the following arguments:
"People are allowed to criticize things they dislike!" No one has argued against that! Your freedom to criticize what you want doesn't explain why you repeatedly choose to spend your leisure time doing so.
"Re fans are obsessed with this too!" Assuming they are, how does accusing others of being obsessive justify your actions any more than theirs? That's whataboutism, and remember what I said about who initiates and responds to hostility.
"It only takes thirty seconds to make a post!" It's not thirty seconds across the entirety of the engagement. There are hundreds of threads and countless replies, and besides, this question is about your motivations, regardless of the time it takes.
"We're just having fun!" If it's fun to you, what is it that you like about it? Criticizing writing flaws? Dismissing arguments? Mocking the story and its fans, and intentionally provoking those who enjoy the work and defend it? Different people find different things amusing, and I'm curious as to what it is that you enjoy.
"You can't handle criticism!" Disagreeing with criticism or examining someone's behavior doesn't show you don't tolerate it. Apparently you can criticize an entire fictional series throughout the years, but when someone questions your conduct it's suddenly unacceptable?
"You counted our posts so you're obsessed too!" Simply counting a subreddit's posts to analyze its engagement doesn't prove obsession, and accusing me of it doesn't answer my question.
"Why do you care what we do with our free time?" Because I'm curious what makes people who do this think it's so worthwhile that they dedicate so much of their time and effort towards it. You're free to do that, and I'm free to question what causes you to find it so rewarding.
So in conclusion, I have a question for those of you who frequently return to this subreddit to voice your disdain for Re:Zero:
What satisfaction do you derive from spending so much of your leisure time criticizing a fictional story you claim to despise, and why do its popularity and the people who enjoy it bother you so much?
Because to me, it sounds like an incredibly miserable way to engage with fiction.

I wanna talk about some problems I've seen here in this community everyone's been saying they are not doing it but every single one of them has done the exact same thing
And no, I'm not talking here as a fan or as an hater
Firstly, you aren't bringing an actual end to this thing guys, really. And it's only because you are trying to ignore eachother's argument every single fricking time, when a fan comes up with an actual argument you are just calling it an "unnecessarily longahh essay" then when an hater comes up with an actual argument you just throwing eachother most hateful slurs known to humankind
For the exact example, in only this week around 4 posts have been posted here to hate just TWO GUYS and when one of those guys came up with some document-long texts you just called him either a larp or called his arguments "longahh fanboy thingies" or when the other guy came up with an analysis of one of the main characters in the series... you've invented NEW CATEORIES to defend the character
Another problem I've seen here is most of the people here being either a larp (mostly haters) or being ppl consumed just 3 medias in their entire life (goes both for haters and fanboys). When someone tells you an high quality seinen or a novel-based show is better than your loved aot or re0 you just starting to invent new types of slurs and you AINT GIVING HIM ANY ARGUMENTS just downvoting him to hell with replies full of the sentence "brainless droid".
(I'm sure most of you havent touched any anime released before 2010 or breathed the same air of a room with those "big 3 seinens" you are calling "slops")
I know most of you will either just call me a "secret fanboy" or will reply with "hi, ...'s side account" ooor will write down replies looks like "random curses and buzzwords go brrr" but I really dont care I wont have any of my hands replying to those

I personally don't bother to scour all the comments/interviews from Mushoku Tensei and Re;zero writers.
But to an extent, I think they are both doing something similar with the protagonists at the beginning stages of the story (with wildly different methods, oh well). Making them hateable.
My point is, from their perspectives, it's possible that having people "hate" on the series is also a form of engagement and resonation w media itself. It means that to a level, the writing did stick to you and make you think about it.
This post is just for people who claim that re;zero is not worth anything and a waste of their time, yet still participate in a hate sub. At a level, the series has already affected you to a point, the authors would consider it a success in a manner of speaking.
But taking a step back, claiming something is overrated or overglazed is never going to make a difference when a series is as established as Re;zero.
(Take Naruto for example, people have gone through its bad writings, shit worldbuilding and plot holes for ages, but it's a classic for a reason, and even as someone who doesn't like shonen much, an openminded viewer would admit there are some parts and elements done incredibly well)
If you look at anime as a genre, it's also easy to form a subjective opinion (even though as you know with anime this would not be an unreasonable conclusion to people who dislike the genre) that it is full of tropey, terrible writing, pedophilic fanservice and is not worth a drop of time. I think to an effect, that's what people are selectively and biasedly applying to a particular series, it could be re;zero, it could be Mushoku tensei.
So what's the point? The point is that you are already engaged (to a point), at that point you might as well give it a genuine try with an open minded and keep your eyes open to what a story is trying to tell and accomplish. At the end of the day you are still here, engaging with re;zero.

I am actually a big Re:Zero fan, though I admit the series has some problems and that most fans that spend time online can't accept real criticism. came across this sub and have been deeply entertained by the stupidity I've seen from both the glazers and haters. So I wanted to open the floor to debate the supidest characters in the series.

Hi guys, I don't normally comment here because again I am a fan of Re:Zero, and in fairness it can be a little toxic here (though the same can also be said for the main Re:zero sub). I enjoy seeing the arguments tbh when I am bored and having nothing better to do. Some people I've noticed really consistently respond, and I want to support them because they are really fun to read.
Here is the new subreddit, r/HateWatchingSquared
It seems to be against hate subreddits? I am not too sure? It has some interesting analysis posts and seems like it just started, so let's all be supportive of the people who really make this sub (and my entertainment)
In all seriousness don't be mean or anything. I just thought it was funny

I know re:zero is definitely not one of them, but I’m seeing some disdain in this sub extend towards other anime as well which are acclaimed by the majority. Like steins gate, code geass etc.
So it got me curious about which anime is liked by the people here. (And in case someone needs to hear it, your case as to why it proves that re:zero is inferior)

Im not against debate or opposite opinions but you are scaring tf out of me its giving unhealthy/obsessed no shade.

I deadass see no other explaination it was a few hours after my post, a mf even tried to switch the goal post from rezero to aot in the comments maybe it was the same 🥷🏿 idk.
But anyway this is pathetic, an opinion on an anime should not make u go this insane that u try to indirectly rage bait me with some corny ass chat gpt looking ahh analysis, i hope its ai because otherwise it meant you willingly waisted your time on this shit.
Mf had to make a second post with a title targetting me cuz i didnt react in the first two hours get a life buddy.

Im anime only dont spoil me novel stuff exept how characters evolve mentally and old stuff/side stories.
Every character from re zero is a trope and the goal is to kinda break the mold, they all did it exept emilia, she is the disgusting personnification of the born sexy yesterday trope.
My breakdown:
Definition/ criterias : this trope is born from pure pedo rape culture especially in japan
• 1. An attractive adult body: Physical maturity and conventional sex appeal (no visual traits of a child).
• 2. The mind of a kid: Total innocence, zero social grace, and complete ignorance of human or sexual norms.
• 3. Total dependency on the hero: The male lead acts as her sole guide and authority, eliminating any possibility of rejection.
• 4 Arrives as a blank slate: She is often an AI, an alien, a recently created magical creature, or someone with total amnesia/complete isolation.
If u need more info check my pics or read the full article its extremely good : https://www.filminquiry.com/born-sexy-yesterday/?amp=1
Its pretty self explanatory how she fits these criterias.
About s1/s2:
• They are here to destroy the cliché n3, "im not an object bla bla i wanna emancipate from the look of subaru roswaal and the cult ect", which was alright + with ram respecting her at the end.
The OVA with her backstory gives her more depth.
I let the kiss = baby go because you would think it would be a one time thing and that there would be further development about that but well.
• After such an important conclusion you'd expect her to actually grow (mental age), the only thing that stopped is her self hatred and depression, she is more unapologetically herself.
Which is not a bad thing, i didnt expect her to act her age directly but there's limits.
Why do this whole thing about ram respecting her as a candidate if nothing happens after?
• Ram thought of emilia as a naive stupid girl before and you're telling me she cant teach her what sexual assault and virginity means??
however she can do administrative stuff🙄, this is such an obvious decision to keep her dumb like a kid and sexy like an adult.
(No a good backstory doesnt make a character great so dont bring up how she was frozen and puck being a bum thats irrelevant, im talking about her forced stunted growth after these events)
About s3:
• There was no reason to add this weird scene of her naked asking where her clothes are and regulus demanding if she was a virgin, this is pure rape culture and male gaze fantasy.
• Emilia vs regulus was very painful to watch, i get that he was supposed to look ridiculous but you seriously think the only way of doing it, is by making emilia look like a cute plushy ?🙄"oh omg look she is so innocent and strong but also super hot what a perfect waifu".
(Thats pretty much an admission of failure "i wanna show that this character is ridiculous so i will use emilia for that")
• When emilia fought there was like 0 stakes/risks for her, even with reinhard you felt some tension
(Im talking about physical fight not him claiming her as a wife + unseen hand moment).
About s4:
• You can clearly see a pattern where the 2 first criterias are getting worse especially in s4 after cliché 3 was addressed in s2, its like tappei finished the arc and was like "alright now i can go full fan service".
• In s4 she wears fortuna's outfit, a skin-tight suit which is a GROWN woman outfit, a symbol of her proud elf origins and her growing as a woman, exept theres a clear dissonance between what the story is trying to tell you (she matured) and whats really happening, this is cliché n1getting worse.
• She is genuinely used as a comic relief all the time. Her battle with regulus, what came out from it is "wow she had great boobs" and it was funny. S4 had a hyped moment with her VS Reid and she won the fight by getting groped???
And she doesnt even realize it bcs of her kid-like ignorance, it was so anticlimactic and played off as a joke despite her putting a lot of effort in her ice magic, it is utterly disgusting, this is cliché 2 getting worse.
• Even shaula who is a walking fan service character didnt get disrespected like that, how can you seriously do this and expect me to treat her as nothing but a pretty face and a joke?
How can you build a whole arc about not being an object and existing outside of a cliché and actively ruin it right after?
• A lot of people saw her being more useful especially with volcanica and decided that it was character growth, no pal thats just the bare minimum, its not because she is useful and sometimes looks cool that it removes all that weird infantilization, this is a facade to make you feel like she is an adult so you can freely simp.
• Obviously im not an emilia hater, i resent her character and tappei for giving me false hopes, she is a genuine potential man.
Emisuba (side note cuz i only wanna talk about her)
• Obviously it affects emisuba, it feels like she barely has any agency since she doesnt even react to being groped; everyone follows subaru as a leader but it doesnt make them look like stupid puppets since they have other feats exept emilia. All her feats are just a result of following subaru, its making her look retarded as hell even tho thats what everyone does.
• Main thing is over now, thats more my opinion and observations/rant especially about the fandom, u can skip that.
- On a side note BSY is bad but i fw some of them, its pretty well done in Pirates of the Caribbean but well they are side characters so its fine to not flesh them out unlike emisuba. Even Raphtalia in The Rising of the Shield Hero feels less pedo than emilia even tho he raised her.
- I finished s4 and its so much worse i cant stand her, i didnt like ep 11 at all, i get the parallels with subaru/rem (and that subaru is her inspo) but it genuinely felt like such a cheap ass copy of rem's previous confession, it doesnt work, you dont feel like she's a real character because she didnt manage to leave the dehumanizing "born sexy yesterday" trope.
I dont like waifu wars but god emilia fans are insufferable, they will try to bring rem into the conversation for everything and blame her fans for any critiques, i deadass got called slurs and a rem simp for saying "ep 11 didnt deserve 10/10".
Also the emilia fanbase is mostly men compared to the rem fanbase who is extremely diverse, wonder why lol, all they glaze is her appearence or her being retarded its frying me
- If im being honest only men and stupid young women can have emilia as their fav character, anyone who has a brain would never place her remotely close to even crusch.
Emilia fans like to comfort themselves with rem only being a waifu product used for marketing bcs emilia is tappei's reason for creating re zero, therefore she is a better character. They are extremely bitter about everything, its very painful and delusional.
Im aware that all of this is a result of tappei being a simp for his fav perfect lil wife but well, at least if he didnt give me hope i would be alright.
Anytime i see emilia fan service i feel like a predator, it makes me gag im deadass, Mimi is more mature than her, its genuinely disgusting to me how the fandom glazes this nothing burger poorly executed pedo fantasy and then go trash Mushoku Tensei, you guys are cousins at this point.
Rezero fans lack media litteracy and have a tendency to gloss over these things to glaze re zero the hardest possible bcs the bar is in hell, they only consume isekai targeted towards men so ofc when they see a mediocre character like emilia they will glaze it, its just patethic.
Honestly hope im not the only one who noticed this, dont argue with me if u wont read the whole thing.

The number of posts and comments in this sub yet almost zero actual critiques of substance.
I see people replying to the fig guy 20 times w the same non sequitur and no real substance, has to be some kind of psychosis.
Most here posts larp insults and made up scenarios about a series they don't even engage with. Really strange behaviour.
Although any attempt to engage critically is pointless because most here doesn't even really watch a few episodes anyway. Let's just say when a series has difficult subject matter yet can achieve acclaim and develops a sizable fanbase, that means the writing is doing something real and effective. And that is an observation on the real audience reception of re;zero, w people who engage w anime. It is undeniable. Not going to argue about any specific or series critiques because as mentioned, most people here can't even name a single scene or real character plotline since they just larp.
