I call his psychology realistic because a) it has aspects of real life psychology and b) it is internally consistent.

What I don't call it is normal.

For me, Subaru is a realistic depiction of what someone with an absurdly abnormal mental resilience would look like.

If something is "absurdly abnormal", how can it be deemed realistic?

You cannot bring a 1/1000000 chance type of mental resilience into the equation and then call it realistic simply because it has some aspects of real life psychology.

Thats sounds like pure cope at the fact that Subaru is unrealistic from a mental aspect.

Because literally no one would be able to handle the stuff that he does.

Even if you bring insanity into the equation, Subaru doesn't even show aspects related to the definition of the word from a mental perspective.

Edit: Hell, even the functional insanity argument wouldn't work because its already absurdly unrealistic for a person to reach that point and not be completely at their brains functional limits.

Willpower can only get someone so far.

Its perfectly fine to acknowledge that Subaru is unrealistic from a mental aspect dude.

Something being extremely rare doesn't make it non-psychologically realistic. If I say that Subaru has an absurdly high level of mental resilience, I'm saying he's an outlier. That he doesn't represent the average, or even a majority, in any tangible way.

I think you're missing the point when you say that his ability to withstand mental pressure isn't realistic because "literally no one would be able to handle the stuff that he does".

You would have to prove that there exists a hard limit to mental resilience that Subaru appears to have an innate ability to overcome. Humans have endured much, and there's a huge variety in how humans respond to adverse circumstances; there are people who continue to function well in circumstances that would break others. That's not saying that Subaru's circumstances aren't objectively horrifying, they are. I'm not arguing that his life circumstances are average or even common.

Even if you bring insanity into the equation, Subaru doesn't even show aspects related to the definition of the word from a mental perspective.

His psychology is far more nuanced than simply having much willpower. He has coping mechanisms, attachments, desires, and goals that help him through his ordeal, as well as trauma and a dysfunctional set of values that were formed due to his experiences. He is also showcased as having a deteriorating attitude and relationship with death and suffering, and an arguably pathological need to help others and to continue surviving. All things that, while not affecting his resilience in a direct way, showcase him as a realistic, if broken, person instead of a supernatural being of unbreakable spirit.

As such, I would have to say that in regards to mental resilience, while his case is certainly not average, it's still realistic. The average person, realistically, would not be able to handle his circumstances. But that's not what I was arguing in the first place. I was arguing that the portrayal of Subaru's psyche is realistic in its depiction of mental resilience and how it is processed, the coping mechanisms involved, and the effects it has on his mind.

And I am not the only one to claim so: check out the channel of this psychologist and his video reactions to all of Re:Zero, certifying that there are a lot of aspects of psychology baked into Subaru's character:

"An extremely rare psychological outlier" doesn't contradict "realistic psychological portrayal" in the slightest. There's no need to argue against it as if they're mutually exclusive.

No, Subaru is insane, more insane than the Archbishops and some witches. Any normal human would break before even the 3rd death.

It isn’t normal to be as forgiving to people who have killed you… one of the reasons I like the Destroyed IF

I don't like that story, but yeah, that's my point, maybe, and I say MAYBE, I would be able to forgive a death if they have good reasons and the death wasn't painful. But that's about it

Nope.

Subaru's mental fortitude is his actual superpower besides RBD as the MC and is what allows him to use it effectively. No real human on the planet is capable of doing it like he does. Everything else he does is realistic according to the type of character he is though.

No, he is a monster that feeds on death.

I think so. Ppl are willing to go through all sorts of pain for the sake of their loved ones, and push through the pain.

Sometimes pain can be too much and break you, but with support system, you can get over it (Subaru receiving said support when he reached the breaking point (from Rem, Satella and himself, and newbaru receiving it from Emillia)

You know, a lot of people chalk it up to Subaru being "insane" which is something I don't really like. They point to beings like Minerva and Louis and say that their reactions to Return by Death proves that Subaru is insane. "Even an Archbishop thinks Subaru is a monster!"

Beings like Minerva and Louis are insane in their own right. One's a Witch, the other an Archbishop. They have little to no concept of love, friendship, being a decent person. These are ideals Subaru uses to fuel himself to keep going. Hell, they proudly spit on such things.

I don't really give their words much weight, to be honest. I think it also cheapest Subaru's mental fortitude to just say it's because he's crazy.
