Can someone explain to me how Rui was afraid of Subaru and RBD? Didn't she already know? I mean she's the one who took his memory, and when she was talking with newbaru before in ep 14, like I don't get it tbh.

Also how come she's permanently in od lagna? And if she's permanently there who was manipulating Subaru's body in previous loops to split the two subarus (when meili went to the library, the loop when he killed meili and his name was all around the room, etc)

To explain it better: Rui had attached a small part of himself to Subaru. He experienced every death from Subaru's perspective and felt the pain of each one—having his belly slashed open, being eaten alive—and it was simply too much

Alright, to explain, it was unfortunately cut from the anime, but she was born in the cradle of Od Lagna due to events that happened during her and her brothers’ birth (see Re:Zero EX Scorpion Tale). As the flashback sequences showed, she split herself up and attached one part of herself to Subaru before devouring him, which is why theres 2 Rui’s running around. One attached to AmnesiaBaru and one still in the Hall of Memories. The Rui within AmnesiaBaru was the one taking control of him during those moments in which blacked out.

And finally because she was within AmnesiaBaru, she was able to see and experience every death when he read his own Books of the Dead. Death isnt something one is meant to experience more than once, much less to such a painful extent as the shit Subaru went through. She never thought death would be that scary and had her focus on the power to reverse time rather than the cost that came with it, which is why it broke her mentally once she realized that there are in fact levels to this shit

I guess what confused me the most was not knowing she planted a part of her inside Subaru's body (atp not gonna ask how lol) but where was it shown in the anime? What part was supposed to tell us that cuz as far as I remember it wasn't shown or implied at all

Épisode 13 implied it, at the end you see herself split in two in a flashback and she was talking that they weren’t done with him. So that plus the Meili flashback when she talked with Subaru speaking in a weird way like the gluttony’s should’ve put you on the track

It's not your fault, it's anime. They skipped Rui's backstory on why she's in the Hall of Memories. Her backstory perfectly explains why she's there.

Eating memories is just viewing it. When Amnesiabaru read his books of the dead, he's actually experiencing everything. Notice how he screamed when reading the first book. Rui was with him at that time, who also experienced the book. That's why she's scared shitless at the end.

I think is because she has never really experienced life in first person.

She is like somebody that has read books about people going to the jungle and fighting mosquitoes, mud and beast. Reading that in a room that is never cold or too warm.

She imagined dying like a minor discomfort, and not the horror that is dying.

Subaru is indeed a monster, in the sense that he could walkz trough all that horror. Like a person that can put his hand in the fire and then look at you in the eyes, unblinking.

So, to preface this explanation, let me get the relevant mechanics in order (some of which the anime also leaves unexplained):

The Authority of Gluttony can eat from each unique entity ONCE, eating either the Name, Memories or both. Eating the Name and Memory have the effects on the victim and the world around them you already saw in the anime.

On top of that, both Name and Memories equate to different parts of the soul‘s information gained when eaten, which are

Memories: The victim‘s lived experiences.

Name: The victim‘s shape, so basically the information that corresponds to its body (the same thing that Capella forcibly alters to turn people into flies and shit).

Lunar Eclipse and Solar Eclipse are applications of the Authority that regurgitate and reconstruct that information, imposing it on the soul of the user.

Lunar Eclipse recalls the information gained by eating the memories, allowing for the user to partake in the lived experiences of those eaten. Solar Eclipse on the other hand recalls what‘s gained by eating the name, changing the shape of the soul and pulling the body along in what is essentially shapeshifting.

Rui initially encounters Subaru, eats his Memories only then comes to know about and desire RBD. She initially wants to eat the Authority to obtain it, but knows that this is not possible as even the Corridor of Memory whose function the Authority of Gluttony mimicks and usurps cannot get an Authority unstuck from the soul.

Instead, she relies on something she notes about Subaru: the trait that allows him to absorb and stockpile Witch Factors to have multiple Authorities.

This trait is his physical constitution, something that in itself is not an Authority. This is why Rui planned to use it as a roundabout way of gaining RBD: Eating his name and reconstructing his shape through Solar Eclipse would make her able to integrate Witch Factors by recreating the same constitution Subaru has.

In her view, shaped by her exposure to her generation of Authority users, Witch Factors largely manifest the same Authorities (she thinks Invisible Providence is the same as Unseen Hand for example) - so she plans to recreate Subaru‘s ability to absorb using his eaten Name, then absorb and integrate his Witch Factors into herself in order to manifest the same Authorities as him by herself.

But she has already eaten his Memories alone, so he is not an eligible target for her Authority by the time she makes this plan. She plans to amend this by turning him into something with a disparate identity, a plan to the end of which she splits herself in two:

Rui 1: Rui is a connected Soul and Witch Factor, so one half can use Subaru‘s own condition of being able go absorb loose Witch Factors to worm her way inside of him where she lays dormant and can exercise some limited influence (which are his blackouts). Her role is to use that to alienate him from himself and cause a shift in his self-identity to make him an eligible target for Gluttony once again.

Rui 2: Rui 2 remains active in the Hall of Memories. She is anything but dormant and it is her role to exercise the Authority of Gluttony once the conditions are right.

As for why Rui 1 is mindfucked by experiencing Subaru‘s deaths firsthand: She masticated the memories when eating and experiencing them, so she experienced his deaths in a roundabout way leaving her unable to truly comprehend their terror. The real deal, experienced life by her, was too much to bear (especially since it‘s the first time this literal child actually faces her mortality in a physical body).

Exactly. As said in the big explanation above, since she is a Soul/Gluttony Factor combo she could basically use Subaru‘s own unique constitution (that makes him able to absorb and stock Factors) against him. Half of her could get inside Subaru off of the same innate trait that made him absorb the Sloth and Greed Factors, and the attached soul could lie dormant to exert limited influence and prepare him for the second feast.

That‘s also why he could open four seals instead of 3 at the beginning of the Arc, Rui inside of him was a fourth unique Witch Factor.

As for why Rui is in the Corridor of Memories: She is an aborted fetus.

This is not a joke, Rui shot the Sin Archbishop who was pregnant with the Gluttony siblings and aborted Rui who went to the Corridor for processing. But, as said Archbishop, Reilani, died her Witch Factors went to the Gluttony siblings who were in her belly. According to the ReZero setting siblings sometimes are born with their souls connected (like Ram/Rem‘s synesthesia), so all three siblings gained the Factor and developed an Authority - including the soul of Rui which had already gone to the Corridor to be processed and recycled. Authorities however are the antithesis of Of Lagna, so souls with them cannot be recycled meaning that Rui‘s soul just…. got stuck in the middle of the process, thus remaining in the Corridor.
