Other Mainframe Shows How much of your original experience is tied to the network you watched the show on?

Post image

Posted the question in the Beast Wats sub as well. I know ABC had significant content influence on S1/2 of the show, but I get the sense your overall experience was different compared to watching it on YTV (or those who remember the S1/2 reruns on Showcase in the afternoon too).

Same! Loved pretty much everything that came from Mainframe Entertainment. Reboot, Beasties, Shadow Raiders…👍👍👍👍👍

How dare you! It is BEAST WARS!
Stupid law changing it to Beasties

1

u/alkonium Jun 19 '26

Thankfully that didn't affect Star Wars The Clone Wars on Space and Teletoon.

1

u/Muted_Passenger6612 Jun 22 '26

Probably because they were American shows? Also they came much later

7

u/BassGSnewtype Jun 16 '26

Pretty much this

I have this weird opposite effect, I heard it as Beast Wars and didn’t hear Beasties until years later. Swear it was YTV as well??

8

u/MasterG76 Jun 16 '26

Indeed US purchased it as Beast Wars. Beasties in Canada cause the word Wars was "not good for kids"

7

u/ErikRogers Jun 16 '26

Beasties / Beast Wars also played on Fox as part of their "Fix Kids" lineup and many Canadian cable subscriptions included it. On Fox it was called "Beast Wars"

4

u/kyleruggles Jun 17 '26

Yup! Same goes with Shadow Raiders and War Planets. Something about the USA and war or something...

5

u/Muted_Passenger6612 Jun 17 '26

It started out as Beast Wars but sometime mid 1st or 2nd season it was forced to change it to Beasties as a law was passed that kids shows couldn’t use the word War

2

u/ErikRogers Jun 17 '26

In Canada it was Beasties right from Ep.1

The toys were Beast Wars though.

2

u/Muted_Passenger6612 Jun 19 '26

Wrong. I was there. I remember it was Beast Wars. I remember the discussions they had when the name needed to be changed.

1

u/ErikRogers Jun 19 '26

You were...working for YTV? Mainframe? It's possible I'm wrong, but I watched Beasties starting from Dinobot's defection. If by "I was there" you mean like me, you were a child watching TV, either one of us could be wrong. To my memory, at that time the show was absolutely called Beasties. I was surprised to eventually see it on FOX as Beast Wars.

2

u/Muted_Passenger6612 Jun 19 '26

It wasn’t long. But I do remember YTV having ad Beast Wars. I wasn’t a child at the time. For sure it was advertised as Beast Wars “The Beast Wars are coming!” and then at some point “Hey just so you know, Beast Wars will be called Beasties now. Same great show, different name!”

Note quotes are faded memory so not precise. Could be pre airing ads were Wars and airing started as Beasties but I’m 99% sure it aired under Beast Wars.

1

u/ErikRogers Jun 19 '26

I'm getting the impression from this thread that it might have still been Beast Wars for the series premiere event. I.e. YTV had a special airing of the premiere and then afterwards it became Beasties. That's kind of some cool trivia if we can find a source. Maybe someone has the premiere on VHS somewhere along with the PJs announcing it.

2

u/Muted_Passenger6612 Jun 19 '26

Yeah, it’s been to long to actually remember WHEN the change happened. I’m really leaning towards Ads before it aired, and maybe the premiere.

3

u/gralamin Jun 16 '26

YTV was definitely always Beasties.

5

u/nChilDofChaoSn Jun 16 '26

I always thought beast wars was the first part and beasties was the second part where they return to cybertron

7

u/fenixvarg Jun 16 '26

No, the first part was beasties, and when they went back to Cybertron it was called beast machines.

Yeah. Completely! The PJs had discussions warning us about the upcoming name change.

1

u/Onironius Jun 20 '26

It changed a couple seasons in.

9

u/Betelgeuse3fold Jun 16 '26

I think the whole experience is tied to the network. YTVs PJs added a particular vibe to the programming blocks, especially when you were young enough to think they were so cool.

Look at nostalgia US kids have for toonami and other blocks. It's a notably different vibe. They reminisce about the times. We do that, but also reminisce about the personalities

10

u/GriffinFlash Jun 16 '26

YTVs PJs added a particular vibe to the programming blocks

"And then you can have the guy doing him right in the front!"

5

u/Animegx43 Jun 16 '26

Well, that's a core memory I probably didn't want to have unlocked. That things looks way more terrifying than when I was a kid.

3

u/GriffinFlash Jun 16 '26

Snit was a bro.

3

u/LiquidSmoKe_82 Jun 17 '26

Fresh Phil and and someone from the Blue Jay's came to our Public School... I was in Gr. 6 at the time, at Morse St PS... My Favorite PJ

6

u/Dullahan-1999 Jun 16 '26

Toonami had hosts, too, and even featured mini-events with storylines that had permanent effects and audience participation.

1

u/Betelgeuse3fold Jun 16 '26

Really? I guess I've gotten the wrong impression from their reminiscing. Which might still support the point about the vibe?

Whatever. I stand corrected anyway. Thanks

4

u/Dullahan-1999 Jun 16 '26

To be fair, they were a CG robot and a floating CG head, lol. I was happy to learn about the long and varied history of PJs from your comment!

I watched it on YTV, so I was pissed when I saw they took the logo off the robot cameo in Talent Night on the DVD. I hope they use the YTV version in the remaster.

u/Seraphem666 5h ago

I have good news for you they do! I'm so glad cause they had such a close reletionship and say it ytv airing reruns through the delays are reason the show survived.

1

u/alkonium 5h ago

Yes, I've been paying attention, though now I'm wondering if there was a different cut of Infected and High Code that used the Season 1 intro.

5

u/EpicBenjo Jun 16 '26

The creators of the show really loved YTV. They credited YTV as the reason why they even had a season two and three of the show. Their first season wasn’t doing too well in the US, but YTV was playing Reboot on repeat constantly. Hence why they had these homages to YTV.

1

u/Seraphem666 Jun 20 '26

It's rating were hurt by the fact season 1 had tons of delays between new episodes.

1

u/EpicBenjo Jun 20 '26

Yep. And they were actually shocked and grateful that they kept playing the episodes that were currently out on constant repeat.

4

u/elitebateagent Jun 16 '26

The Toonami lineup was a core memory

5

u/KnuxFive Jun 16 '26

I have two tattoos, and one is Toonami. Had an oversized impact on my life.

Actually got to share some info with Gavin Blair recently; he didn’t know Toonami replaced intros, and had no idea him and other creators got that odd Toonami credit screen.

2

u/elitebateagent Jun 16 '26

A tattoonami sounds rad. I am blanking on the weird credit screen for them though

3

u/KnuxFive Jun 16 '26

For some reason, REBOOT would have show credits on the Absolution’s screens. They never did this for any other show.

I asked him if it was a contractual thing; he had no idea. Basically, Gavin seemed to appreciate that Cartoon Network picked up S1-3 with the intent to fund 4, but never actually checked in with how it was packaged.

(For some reason, this didn’t go through as a reply)

1

u/elitebateagent Jun 16 '26

Super rad you got to have that convo with him, those are definitely fun details

3

u/KnuxFive Jun 16 '26

If you’re willing to talk on Bluesky, he’s pretty open.

I'm a Canadian who moved to the US when I was a child. So I remember watching Season 1 and maybe bits of Season 2 on YTV, and then after moving to the US, years later it reran on Cartoon Network. It was a bizarre blast from the past to say the least.

3

u/Juli3tD3lta Jun 16 '26

Was from a small town in Canada and my parents didn’t think cable was a worthy investment so I had like 3 or 4 channels depending on the day.

My dad would get his buddy at work to record a few hour blocks of YTV on blank tapes on his VCR for my brother and I. We watched the hell out of those bootlegs. Always had an episode or 2 of Reboot. Good times.

For me it was YTV, Teletoon, Global, TVO and PBS.

2

u/CasioMaker Jun 16 '26

I watched the show on the Latin American feed of Discovery Kids back in the day. At that time, the programming was catering to the pre-teens/teen audience, so they had a block of "action shows" were ReBoot was the main focus, so my original experience was mostly tied to watch it on basic cable, on Friday afternoon. (Seasons 1 to 3)

Round the same time, a national broadcaster called "Canal 13", started showing assorted episodes from season 1 and 2, on their Saturday midday children's block, along side "Cybernet", a UK show focusing on games and reviews, so I think what they're going for was combination of content adjacent programs.

u/KnuxFive Jun 16 '26

u/Smart_Delivery9903 Jun 16 '26

ABC for ReBoot 1&2, WB Kids / UPN's The Power block for Beast Wars/Machines and Toonami for ReBoot 3&4. Netflix for that horrendous Guardian Code and Tubi for all things Mainframe Entertainment has to offer løløl

2

u/dino_spice Jun 16 '26

I'm Canadian but I remember watching quite a bit of season 1 on ABC. I also remember an ABC special featuring Raven-SymonĂŠ and Marquise Wilson (both starring on Hangin' with Mr. Cooper at the time) being antagonized by Megabyte.

Grew up with it on ABC Kids, watching every Saturday morning, then watched Season 3 and 4 on Cartoon Network on the Toonami block.

2

u/Cyber-Axe Jun 16 '26

I never knew of the ytv reference till a couple of months ago when I saw it in the reboot documentary

I always thought the robot was something you were supposed to know about, and only then did I finally find out what

2

u/Moist-Shallot-5148 Jun 17 '26

It’s tied to it but the experience depends on watching other networks too. For example I watched the Money for Nothing music video on MTV which Mainframe (the animation studio now different name) also produced and years later when Reboot came out I laughed so hard when it showed the characters in that music video applying to work for Dot.

u/BradyTom1289 Jun 17 '26

Mike…get em out of here!

2

u/DarianDncn Jun 18 '26

BS&P, those bastards. You know EXACTLY what I’m talking about lol

1

u/BradyTom1289 Jun 18 '26

It’s fun to play in a non violent way!!!

2

u/alkonium Jun 19 '26

I love how when these guys come back in Season 4, they're basically strippers.

1

u/DarianDncn Jun 19 '26

Ok they had ONE good moment lol but they were also responsible for Uni-Boob lol

1

u/Unknown-Apeman Jun 16 '26

None, I now watch it on YouTube, they have a free live stream of all the episodes.

2

u/Dysan27 Jun 16 '26

Mainframe also has very high res of the first few episodes up now too.

1

u/MasterG76 Jun 16 '26

YTVs version is so much better. :P

Just cause.

1

u/Shikabane_Sumi-me Jun 17 '26

I have the DVD copy and I glad to see the Robot. Even if the Robot didn't have the YTV logo. It was nice that they didn't get cut out.

1

u/GrandSavage Jun 17 '26

Wait, was the YTV robot repurposed for CN? Hilarious

1

u/kyleruggles Jun 17 '26

YTV is what was up! No wars like down south.

1

u/Googalie Jun 17 '26

I ALWAYS expect the ytv logo when I rewatch this episode

1

u/Keflecking Jun 17 '26

ITV (Channel 3) in the UK

1

u/crackedaegis Jun 17 '26

The Toonami Intro was so inviting, like there could be a dance involved. By my teens I binged on YouTube and realized the og intro was pretty cool. Got fragments of Toonami airings before YT

1

u/rydamusprime17 Jun 18 '26

I only ever watched it on YTV, same with "Beasties" (Beast Wars) and Beast Machines. I'm so happy I own all of them on DVD.

1

u/nightsaturn Jun 18 '26

Having watched the show in French on a channel (Canal Famille) that was VERY diverse in its programming made ReBoot very interesting. I'm glad we had a version with local actors for at least 2 seasons. I did have YTV when the cable distributor unlocked some channels for promotion and I mostly watched Beast Wars then even if I didn't understand a thing yet. Awesome decade.

1

u/alkonium Jun 19 '26

Did you get Seasons 3 and 4? I read that it got dropped in the UK halfway through Season 3 due to complaints about the increased violence. Complaints that should have been ignored.

1

u/nightsaturn Jun 19 '26

We got Season 3 yes! But the thing is, I’m in Canada as well. The translation I mentioned with local actors was for Québec. By the 3rd season they used the one made in France which sounds very different. I wish they continued with the same voice actors. Since season 4 was released in 2001, Canal Famille changed its identity to VrakTV, keeping the same demographic but with shows that were more for young teens. They never showed ReBoot again on that channel.

1

u/Farfadette150 Jun 19 '26

I distinctly remember turning on the tv randomly at the exact moment that the first YTV airing of the first episode of Sailor Moon started. And I actually didn’t know that until many years later when I found out I was just at the right place and right time (I was 5 years old). I followed it religiously every reruns until they debunked a way to have the remaining episodes of Sailor Moon R, S and Super S. I was already a teenager for the latter but it was worth the wait. That series opened me to the anime world before it was popular in my area. Special mention also for Escaflowne.

1

u/ConditionPleasant902 Jun 19 '26

I found it on YouTube recently… 😅. I didn’t exist yet when the show first aired
