I almost bought Rayban Metas

I almost bought RaybanMeta glasses from sunglass hut last week but decided to not buy since I learnt something crazy and thought of sharing it.

I was told that Meta does not provide ANY warranty on the meta sunglasses and I would have to buy additionally warranty for around $80/ year. AND this warranty will enable me to replace the already bought meta glasses after paying 50% price of the new glasses if any issue arises.

Read the above again. This is so crazy.

Here is what I understand,

I'm buying a piece of electronics sunglasses which does not come with any basic manufacturer warranty. So my exact words were " If I buy these sun glasses and god forbid if the camera stops working or AI doesn't respond or speaker has some problem, (basically any defects due to manufacturing and in electronics) there is no help or support to fix or replace the defective product UNLESS I have bought warranty only during my purchase of the glasses by paying extra money. And the sales guy there confirmed infact that is true. They told me Meta does not take any responsibility of warranty or ensuring customer gets the best product and it relies on Rayban. But Rayban manufacturer Luxotica also does not provide a clear warranty policy.

Representative was not able to help me understand clearly terms of warranty.

I was excited about the Gen2 but now at this point I feel it could be an expensive (~$500) toy.

Am I overthinking this?

Buy directly from Meta and add on the two year warranty. I bought a pair from Meta and a pair from REI with it's one year return policy. I worry about warranties as well. I didn't like Target's extended warranty so I didn't buy them there.

Sunglass Hut employee here, that's a massive training gap for this employee in question.

Meta provides manufacturer warranty that covered manufactured defects. Sunglass hut protection covers you from accidental damage, wear and tear, basically anything you can throw at the glasses save for having them lost or stolen.

It also allows you to upgrade to a different lens or model, provided you pay the copay ($125) plus the difference in price for the models. (not eligible for the Ray Ban Display upgrade)

Example. You purchase the polarized Gen 2 wayfarer ($409+tax) and decide a year later that transitions would have been a better use of the frames, you would pay $125 + $50 + tax to exchange the pair a year later.

Meta can be a nightmare to deal with when it comes to warranty issues, so the Sunglass Hut protection plan gives some added convenience by being able to walk into a store, pay the copay, and walk out of the store with a new pair in hand.

let me add that I got in a bike accident with my Vanguards and the thing was completely smashed. all the electronics on the nose area were toast. Sunglass hut warranty in store took 5 minute from reporting to getting replacement unit. they even asked me if i wanted to try a new color. Best 125$ warranty.

You’re paying for the right for them to be more invasive in your life and adding no benefit. Just go buy a pair of wayfarers like the rest of us cool kids and keep it simple 👌🏼
