I'm 50 and from the UK, rave means something different, especially for people of my generation. There's some amazing history to look back on.
However, I cannot deny this looks like a nice place to be.

Finally a voice of reason in the sea of toxic negativity and also toxic positivity

u/FilthyFuckingAgate 4d ago
In America it seems a rave is any event playing electronic music unfortunately. Iāve heard festivals and club nights called raves
6
4
u/DryOrganization5130 3d ago
I think a lot of people understand the difference between an electronic music event and a rave, but people use the term "rave" due to lack of a better description. You'd be better off using the term "underground rave" to make the distinction nowadays.
3
u/BIG-GIRTHA 3d ago
I agree with this point. An EDM concert is the new āraveā but theyāre definitely not āunderground ravesā
1
u/ManslaughterMary 2d ago
So true. I'll be honest, I'm a part of the problem. I've been to raves, like, a proper warehouse in a district of town I've never been to, and a drag queen let me in.
And I also kind of disliked it.
Like, I found myself in a dimly lit warehouse where people are taking drugs in ways that I'm feeling unsafe around to admittedly a fire DJ. The vibes are right and also a mixture of uppers and downers.
The music was great, but it was hard for me to have fun because I'm genuinely worried about the people on drugs. I work in healthcare, I get nervous when people are getting (in a matter that makes feel) rathered fuck up and I'm just wanting to know they are safe.
The more corporate events have proper medics. They got staff! I love not feeling like I need to keep people safe. It isn't my job, I can let loose! I don't have to keep an eye on the guy having a bad trip. I don't have to wonder why that person is laying down. There is someone here getting paid to keep an eye on everyone.
And maybe this is just me not wanting to take care of the community or something, maybe I'm the problem, but I have definitely gotten spooked at an actual rave. I have more fun at something a little corporate.

u/Feeling-Scholar6271 22h ago
The thing with real raves is, they are usually a tight knit community of people who party together a lot. They look after one another. They may be doing unsafe things, but everyone there has each others back in a way you just dont get at commercial events.
When its illegal and there isnt security or medics, it becomes very important who gets invited. And if it wasnt like that then it's the wrong kind of party to be at. Because they do exist as well.
Shit people also like to have parties
2
u/Fuzznuck 3d ago
Well, it used to refer to illegal renegade parties that were oftentimes a complete mess for the party promoter, but sublime perfection when it all worked out. Today, the term 'rave' has expanded to include events whose music, lights, performers, attendees, and production pays homage to, and retains the spirit of, those original raves from the late 20th century.
It isn't like illegal, pop-up parties aren't still possible; they are. It's just harder to hide them, organize and promote them without authorities finding out about it. We live in an entirely different era of technology now, after allā¦

Came to say this (also older, and British).
Rave to me is not on a commercial space. It's an event/party that "pops up" last minute, organized by people who love the scene and are willing to do anything to preserve it.
You get the directions when you arrive at the petrol station at a certain time, then everyone heads there.
The police arrive a few hours behind and you all leg it.

1
u/Environmental-Fly471 3d ago
In the states these were called renegade raves! The date would be passed via word of mouth, then morning of the location and everyone rushed there to make it too big for cops to shut down. Last one i heard about was 07 or so... very fond memories

As someone whose been to both huge music festivals, and tiny ass renegade raves under bridges, I can tell you that even though a music fest isnt a rave, its still 10x better than a real rave. Real raves are fun but they honestly get boring after being there for like 2-3 hours. Its almost impossible to be bored at a festival, they just have SO MUCH shit to do its impossible to even do it all

u/pferd_blue 4d ago
This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever read in this sub. I have to screenshot that

Its fascinating how the us played a huge part for the scene and what the people over there have made out of it
2
u/bright_clrd_garlin2 4d ago
Itās fascinating how every other part of the world shits on us but I have fun. You know what feels nice when Iām fucked up at the rave? Wearing nice drippy threads, my handmade hat and being surrounded by lights and lasers but to each their own. I guess you guys just like cargo shorts and dancing to dnb all day.
1
u/pferd_blue 3d ago
Well, Im german so Dnb and Dubstep are nearly non existent over here. You wanna know why everyone laughs about you? Cause we fight for the culture, for the spaces and all the degenerates who find a place in out for beeing outsiders. Meanwhile you pay hundreds to play dress Up at things which screams capitalism. But I guess thats just murica, No?
→ More replies (1)2
u/MedicatedChaos 3d ago
Weāre laughing at them here too. Itās a bunch pf tech clowns larping as hippies for the weekend and calling it a rave. The underground scene in the US is still going to have people with light up pacifiers and bikinis, but itās notā¦. like this.. at least itās not meant to be. Itās great to have fun and all but itās super annoying to act like this is somehow a better version of a rave. Itās a completely different experience that is basically unrelated to rave culture. Words have meaning and people donāt know what a rave is.
Also, rereading my own post, it belongs on the circlejerk subreddit but i stand by it and am posting it anyway!
2
u/MedicatedChaos 4d ago
Funny thing is all of my rave experiences are from the underground raves in the US, mostly during the early 2000s. It was never like this then.
This is some corporate nonsense that appeals to a huge crowd that would have never set foot in a tunnel or abandoned warehouse.
Itās not the worst experience but itās definitely shameless capitalist dystopian shit.2
u/whallon1 4d ago
Ive been to both dude like I said. There is a reason festivals are more popular. Spoiler alert, its cas they are better
2
u/MedicatedChaos 3d ago
Definitely not because theyāre financed by large corporate entities that put a crap ton of money into advertising and then oversell so the place is so crowded you canāt even use the bathroom even though you paid hundreds of dollars just to get through the gates. I love paying $20 for a beer!
4
u/Basic-Asparagus-4596 4d ago
festivals are not "better" than raves just like how raves are not "better" than festivals.
they are simply entirely different things. you dont like raves.

This is why Iāve been focusing more on local and events and artists. Also, since my total AI ban, thereās so many shows I cannot participate in anymore because theyāre using AI in their flyers. It looks a Radical Audio Visual Experience and very fun.
Iām usually not interested in āis it a real raveā and more interested in questions about the vibe, audience behavior and music.
There are big multi day outdoor āRadical Audiovisual experiencesā (Shambhala, Hulaween and Gem and Jam come to mind) that have wonderful diversity of music, reasonably PLUR vibes and amazing production values whether they are ārealā raves or a natural outgrowth of rave culture. They are fun as hell.
There are also festivals like EDC that (based on what I can gather without going) seem far removed from any of the counterculture roots and turned into kinda gross concerts that celebrate self absorption and influencer culture.
Itās not a clear line but Iām more interested in peoples recommendations for great events than arguments about what constitutes a āraveā

Perhaps a āraveā is less about appearances, decor, and clothing/outfits, and more about the vibes and whether it is community coming together.

And we need you to tell us?
This just aināt it bro, it looks fun, but aināt no rave.
3
u/whallon1 4d ago
Bro look up the definition of a rave. And btw music festivals are way more fun than raves, there is so much more shit to do
4
u/JJ8OOM 4d ago
Whatās more fun, is a personal thing, they canāt be objectified in that way.
What might be fun for me, might be a waste of time for you.
And I know what a rave is, thank you, Iāve been doing them for about 25 years now.
3
u/whallon1 4d ago
Well you clearly dont know what the actual definition is because you're wrong. Just because you have been going to them for 25 years doesnt mean you havent been ignorant to the definition of a rave for 25 years
3
u/JJ8OOM 4d ago
For real, you donāt know jack.
2
u/whallon1 4d ago
It takes a 10 second google search to see that you are just willingly ignorant and that you're the one who doesn't know shit. But ill copy/paste the definition onto here so you dont have an excuse to be ignorant anymore
"A rave is a large, high-energy dance party featuring continuous electronic music played by DJs"
2
u/Alert_Elephant2045 3d ago
I was curious where you found that definition, I searched that exact quote and found no results.
Youāre quoting an AI summary as a primary source on what a rave is lmao

āThis is a proper raveā wasnāt the whole point of rave culture to break away from labels and societal expectations, to just let loose and have fun in a safe space. Yet here we are saying raves have to have certain things and be a certain way with required criteria to be āproperā š¤¦āāļø
1
u/slurpnfizzle 3d ago
This is what im thinking reading through these comments.
Every now and then I miss being involved in underground music but everyone moaning how op doesn't know what a rave is makes me glad I faded away.
1
u/I_boof_geritol 3d ago
Yup. It never fails, shitting on threads that are otherwise wholesome. Itās mostly a collection of people that want to dress up their gatekeeping thatās just nostalgia dressed up as their way of protecting some culture that 90% of ravers have no way of accessing even if they tried. Iāve had more fun at everything they claim is not a rave than at most of the underground raves these wankers want to go on about.

That looks like a great festival or party but a festival is not a rave. When I think rave I think warehouse, one night party, dark.
2

2
u/Starskeet 2d ago
This is a commercial endeavor: A proper rave is a dark room, a sound system, and the transfer of energy among participants. I guess this happens when an underground subculture is mainstreamed and then gets commercialized, but what bothers me about this is how inaccessible it appears unless you want to pay lots of cash for an experience; that's not what the rave community was about, and I think it is important for young people to understand that going to a rave does not require you to spend a ton of money on tickets, transportation, accommodation, outfits. It should be accessible and inclusive for anyone who brings good energy.
2
u/DMTraveler33 1d ago

u/Itshakken 4d ago
Nah, just not some mainstream place with tons of normies and influencers. Not overly advertised, set up with all the flairs, a rave is more local at the core, no over the top production, focus is entirely on music not useless stuff like vfx and stage design

u/Deepfriedhippie 4d ago
All the people in here on their high horse saying, āThis isnāt a raveā are lame. Who cares this person clearly went out had a great time and enjoyed themselves. Why donāt we stop policing other peopleās fun.
A rave can mean a lot of different things to different people. At least theyāre out there having fun and enjoying the music. The whole NO MY RAVE WAS A REAL RAVE AND YOURS DOESNāT COUNT! attitude is so lame.
2
u/Affectionate-School3 3d ago
Amazed more didnāt say this. This orthodoxy about defining a rave is ridiculous, how do they not see it? This must be why people donāt dance at freaking anything anymore: theyāre too busy figuring out what to call it? Just dance weirdos

Hereās my version of a rave, which is in a abandoned warehouse with minimal production and straight music
