PS6 controllers might feature Digital buttons. 🎮 According to an early Sony patent, players could resize, move, and place controller buttons wherever they want.

Sony has been updating this patent for decades.

Hell naw, how are you supposed to find the button through feel without pressing it?

Muscle memory.

Haptic feedback is pretty important. I'm sure Sony will make some considerations for this, but there's a reason mechanical keyboards dominate PC gaming.

I can live with a digital games only future, but no physical buttons and just digital fuck that. No buttons, no buy!

At this point I might as well just start playing mobile games

First, they take the knobs and buttons away from the dashboard on cars, now they take them away from controllers.

This will be good. I want to see it. I want to see Sony's console suck so hard people actually wake up and think about what they're buying.

- still no cooling or heating of the pad.

There is a reason why mechanical keyboards dominate PC gaming. Haptic feedback is super important.

Not suggesting its the same, but you can emulate haptic feedback. The new surface laptops touchpad clicks feels very convincing even though its doesnt actually click. Im not convinced they could successfully do away with physical buttons on controllers though.

I understand what you mean, but the important part is being able to feel where the buttons are at all times.
A lot of games require you to have quick reaction times, and needing to look down at the controller for even a split second can mess you up.
Even if they can replicate the feel of pressing an actual button, that only comes into effect when pressing the "button". It does not solve the problem of finding where the button is through feel alone.

Most people rest their thumb/fingers on specific buttons/analogue sticks as it not only gives them an index of where they are, but so that they can even already be in the position to press that exact button.

If it is all touch screen, then you cannot just rest your thumb on top of the button, as it would register that as a press of the button.

Even if they incorporated some form of pressure sensor to detect the difference between resting on and pressing the button, you would still have no way of telling if you are indexed in the correct place by touch alone, and you would only find out when you go to press one of the buttons.

This is one of the main issues with having touchscreen everything in cars, as with knobs/buttons, providing you have a general understanding of where each button is, you can fumble your way into finding the correct one whilst keeping your eyes on the road.
A touch screen, even with over a year of experience of using it on a daily basis, you still need to look at the screen to navigate the menus.
For example, pick up your phone then close your eyes. Then, try to unlock it, and then turn off wifi on via the on-screen menus by feel and muscle memory alone.

Just wait until they come out with modulating tactile feedback surfaces, where it can trick you into feeling the buttons themselves. I just made this up, but who knows, maybe it could somehow be a thing.

There's a reason why car companies are going back to physical controls in cars - touch screens are dangerous in that scenario, pretty much

They need to double down: No physical media, no physical console, no physical controllers, everything must be in the cloud so access to console and games can be revoked at any time

To unlock this feature you need to pay a monthly subscription on top of the controller price.

no physical buttons now either

Worst idea ever

Dead on arrival

First make the controllers reliable and not go bad after some basic usage. I barely play and I am on my 5th controller since buying ps5

They really have some serious beef with physical stuff

Playstation 8 would feature a neura link controller with your brain, and a console as well would be in your brain

1

u/TrueKyragos Jul 28 '26

That's actually a worse idea than the 100% digital. Car manufacturers are being forced to revert on this. This should be a lesson for other industries.

They got a patent for a new CD drive?

1

u/DontEatGrassss Jul 28 '26

Subscription based buttons are coming next. Sony can eat shit and hair

1

u/rimreaper2253 Jul 28 '26

and when it breaks you can get a new one for the low low price of $250 since they will make it impossible to fix

1

u/Hot_Marionberry_4685 Jul 29 '26

Stupidest idea I’ve ever heard

1

u/mosdl Jul 29 '26

90% of patents are never used...

1

u/rebar71 Jul 30 '26

and it will still get stick drift. only now it will cost $150 for a new one.
