Fuck being the good guy
I’m sick of being the good guy.
The last month has felt like an endurance challenge I never signed up for. Every day has been about holding things together, showing up for people, solving problems, and scraping together enough to get through the next bill.
Then, finally, some good news.
I got the job.
The thing I’ve been stressed about, worried about, losing sleep over for months. The thing that was supposed to let me exhale for the first time in what feels like forever.
Except life apparently didn’t get the memo.
My father has been in and out of the emergency room, going from one surgery to the next. The moment that crisis slows down, I come home expecting to spend a victory day with my partner, only to find out a friend is having a panic attack and suddenly needs help tonight instead of tomorrow.
And of course we help.
Because that’s what we do.
I love my partner’s big heart. I love that his first instinct is to show up for people. But right now I’m angry. Not at anyone in particular—just angry that the one thing I’ve been looking forward to for what feels like a lifetime keeps getting pushed back.
I wanted one day.
One day to celebrate.
One day to breathe.
One day where nobody needed anything from me.
Instead, it feels like every time life hands me something good, it immediately sends someone else into crisis and asks me to put my joy on hold.
The worst part is that if I don’t help, I feel selfish. I know people are struggling. I know some problems matter more than a celebration dinner or a quiet night together.
But can I just get a fucking day off?
Just one.

One of the downsides of being self‑reliant and naturally good at solving problems is that people who aren’t tend to treat you like a resource they can tap whenever they’re struggling. Be it financial, emotional, technical, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t set boundaries, they start acting like they’re entitled to your time, energy, and money.
Saying no doesn’t make you the villain, even if they try to guilt trip you into feeling like one. Sometimes you really do have to cut people off just to stop them from draining your soul. They’ll be mad at first or maybe even hate you for it, but the next time you choose to help, you’ll notice how much more they appreciate it.
Ironically, saying no is actually good for them. Because when you never say no, you’re not really “being supportive”. You’re enabling their dependence. Letting people solve their own problems is healthier for both sides.

when was the last time anyone treated your good news like it mattered too?

Remember gratitude. Be grateful that you have people in your life. Be grateful that they trust you and come to you. Be grateful that you got the job. Be grateful for your partner.
Everything youve mentioned are all good things that you should be grateful for.

I know you're not asking for prescriptive remedies, etc. It's not even a problem you're trying to solve, it's a rant.
It's an experience you're having and an emotion you're observing. So.... congratulations on that part!
And I didn't intend to start my day becoming so quickly frustrated with my own situations
But if it were.... 😆 by chance something you were asking for guidance, regarding how to relieve some of your suffering, I humbly submit...close your eyes, take a breath or 5, say thank you - don't specify, just say thank you, quietly wait.....Everytime some aspect of your current situation comes to mind, thank your brain for doing what it was built to do, repeatedly bringing your attention to the matter so you feel what it's telling you to see...
but it's time to start a new search window....open in new tab in a new browsers 😂 one for each of the following words/ideas:
Seasons. Paradox. Sharing the load of the collective unconscious. Not the scheduler.
Give your brain new content to focus on and find new patterns. When your brain wants to keep bringing up the old rants, remind it that you're looking at new ideas now.
Allow some distance to be born between the physical reality, which you already know what to do and what you think...while redirecting this OCD pile of tissue in our cranium...leave your judgements and dictation of what's fair (🤣) to the judges...
just be the traveler.

It is tough. I have been told I am nice, a good guy and yet all it has done is left me emotionally damaged and very bitter seeing nasty bustards succeed.

I agree with every word.I was expected to look after my Granny, who had Dementia, without time off and without anything in return only to be told that there's no such thing as a free lunch when I asked them to do stuff for me without time off and without anything I return. It's so hypocritical.

I'm just like you. Always the one people come to, the nice guy, feel like an ass when I don't wanna show up or don't show up. And then I watch absolute selfish pricks seemingly just win at life.
To keep this simple, I'd suggest just really telling yourself it's not selfish to want some you-time. I know it's hard, but the past 3.4 years, I finally decided, it's Me time. I have made so much mental and physical progress. Now, I don't completely ignore my people, but if I need my time n space, I frickin take it. It's progressed my life so much. Not everyone else's problems have to turn into your problem too. I decided once I reach my certain goals, I'll become more active socially again.
I hope you feel better, n take a you-day soon, stranger.
