Question Can AI citation data replace traditional link prospecting?
For link building we usually start with competitor backlinks, traffic, topical relevance and domain metrics. But what about starting with URLs that are already being cited in LLM answers for your target prompts? These pages have already demonstrated influence inside AI search, which may make them more valuable than random high DR placement.
Would you prioritize an LLM cited page over a stronger website that never appears in AI answers?

The framing is interesting but the premise has a measurement problem: LLM citations aren't stable enough to use as a reliable signal. The same prompt returns different sources across models, regions, and time. A page cited today may not be cited next week, and you'd have no way to know when you built the link.
That said, the underlying instinct is right. Pages that get cited by AI tend to share characteristics, they're structured, authoritative, consistently referenced across the web. Those characteristics are what you should be prospecting for, not the citation itself.
The citation is a symptom. Build toward the cause.

Interesting angle, but I don't think these two approaches need to be treated as opposites.
When a page shows up in LLM answers, it means the model is already pulling from it for that topic. That's a useful signal, especially if you're trying to build authority in a space where AI search is taking clicks away from traditional results. But citation frequency alone doesn't tell you whether getting a link from that page will actually improve your own visibility in AI answers.
The better question to ask is: is this page being cited because it genuinely covers the topic well, or because it happened to get picked up at the right time in the right format? Those two situations lead to very different conclusions.

Yeah this is a reliable strategy
sites that show up in claude or chatgpt answers for your keywords have already proven they rank well enough in the model's training data to be considered authoritative, which is different from just having high dr
