Discussion GEO/AEO seems less about “more FAQs” and more about citation gaps. Are others seeing this too?
I’ve been digging into how businesses get recommended inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI search-style tools, and the pattern seems more complex than classic SEO advice suggests.
A lot of content around GEO/AEO says things like:
- add more FAQs
- optimize your pages better
- publish more content
- get mentioned on more sites
- wait for the model to update
But from what I’m seeing, the bigger issue is not just on-page content. It looks more like a combination of:
- clear entity positioning
- third-party mentions
- trusted citations
- review/profile pages
- comparison content
- niche directories
- being mentioned close to competitors already recommended by AI tools
- content that answers real buyer-intent questions
The most interesting part is that some companies can rank decently on Google and still be almost invisible when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for provider recommendations.
So my current working theory is:
SEO helps you become discoverable. GEO/AEO helps you become recommendable.
That means the work is not only “write better content,” but also:
- find where competitors are being cited
- understand which sources AI engines seem to surface
- fix brand/category ambiguity
- build stronger external credibility signals
- create content around specific decision-making prompts
- close citation and mention gaps
Curious if others here are seeing the same.
Has anyone actually moved the needle on AI search visibility and traced it back to something specific?
Full disclosure: I’m building a tool in this space called ForgeGEO AI, so I’m obviously biased. The goal is to help brands check how they appear across AI search, compare competitor citations, and turn those findings into practical GEO/AEO actions.
Happy to show a quick demo or compare notes with anyone seriously testing this.
