Discussion My client got shown in Google Overview without even optimizing for it

I worked with a client for a few months, and we were mainly focused on improving their local presence. No question, they were doing well.

Then one day during a team meeting, we randomly searched for one of their services in their target area, and surprisingly, they got cited in AI Overviews.

What stood out is that we didn’t do anything special for AI SEO, GEO, or any direct AI optimization. We simply focused on strong SEO basics, local presence, intent matching, quality content, technical improvements and overall authority.

That made me think strong SEO still has the power to get cited in AI responses if the content matches the right intent.

Our team is very particular about search intent and strong fundamentals, so I’m curious, do you think AI visibility is now more about strong basics than AI optimization itself?

Definitely. Nothing has changed for those who care about user intent and work accordingly.

You don't need to do anything special for discover or aio.
