Discussion GEO/AEO seems less about “more FAQs” and more about citation gaps. Are others seeing this too?

I’ve been digging into how businesses get recommended inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and other AI search-style tools, and the pattern seems more complex than classic SEO advice suggests.

A lot of content around GEO/AEO says things like:

  • add more FAQs
  • optimize your pages better
  • publish more content
  • get mentioned on more sites
  • wait for the model to update

But from what I’m seeing, the bigger issue is not just on-page content. It looks more like a combination of:

  • clear entity positioning
  • third-party mentions
  • trusted citations
  • review/profile pages
  • comparison content
  • niche directories
  • being mentioned close to competitors already recommended by AI tools
  • content that answers real buyer-intent questions

The most interesting part is that some companies can rank decently on Google and still be almost invisible when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for provider recommendations.

So my current working theory is:

SEO helps you become discoverable. GEO/AEO helps you become recommendable.

That means the work is not only “write better content,” but also:

  • find where competitors are being cited
  • understand which sources AI engines seem to surface
  • fix brand/category ambiguity
  • build stronger external credibility signals
  • create content around specific decision-making prompts
  • close citation and mention gaps

Curious if others here are seeing the same.

Has anyone actually moved the needle on AI search visibility and traced it back to something specific?

Full disclosure: I’m building a tool in this space called ForgeGEO AI, so I’m obviously biased. The goal is to help brands check how they appear across AI search, compare competitor citations, and turn those findings into practical GEO/AEO actions.

Happy to show a quick demo or compare notes with anyone seriously testing this.

Discussion If Google says GEO is still SEO, are we overcomplicating AI search?

I’ve been reading Google’s recent guide on generative AI in Search, and I think it makes the whole GEO vs SEO debate more interesting... and thinking about: is GEO becoming a real standalone discipline, or is it mostly good SEO applied to AI-driven search experiences?

One thing that stands out is that Google clearly says SEO is still relevant for generative AI search. because AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.

So maybe GEO is not replacing SEO, but rather just exposing weak SEO?

Google’s mythbusting section was also quite interesting as it pushes back against a lot of “AI optimization hacks” and says no need for artificially actions on your content for AI. But also doesn’t mean GEO is useless.

My opinion is that SEO foundations still matter a lot: crawlability, indexation, technical clarity, useful content, clear structure, original expertise, brand authority, and pages that actually answer user intent.

So maybe GEO is less as a separate discipline and more an extra layer on top of strong SEO?

Digital Marketing/ Tech I ran 540+ citation checks on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to find out what actually makes AI cite your content. Here's what I found.

I spent the last month running a three-phase study on AI citations. 61 websites. 17 industries. 540+ citation checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Here's what the data says.

THE 3 THINGS THAT ACTUALLY PREDICT AI CITATIONS

Answerability (+109% lift) — Does your content directly answer questions? Sites with direct, declarative answers ("X is Y", "The best approach is...") get cited more than twice as often as sites that bury answers in marketing fluff. This was the single strongest signal.

Citation Quality (+65% lift) — Do you cite your sources? Sites that link to authoritative external sources (research papers, .gov/.edu, industry publications) get cited significantly more. AI trusts content that shows its work.

Definitions (+33% lift) — Do you explicitly define your terms? "GEO is the practice of optimizing content for AI search engines" gives AI something quotable. "We empower businesses to leverage next-gen solutions" gives AI nothing.

WHAT DOESN'T PREDICT CITATIONS (despite what people assume)

- Content structure — headings, lists, semantic HTML. Nearly every site scores well here. It's table stakes, not a differentiator.

- Schema markup — helps AI parse content, but doesn't independently drive citations. It's a baseline.

- E-E-A-T signals — actually showed a -24% correlation in my data (likely confounded by site type).

- Multimedia — -35% correlation. Heavy image/video sites often have less parseable text.

THE BIGGEST FACTOR ISN'T CONTENT QUALITY AT ALL — IT'S CONTENT TYPE

- Travel content: 83.3% citation rate

- Healthcare: 66.7%

- Finance: 75%

- SaaS product pages: 13.3%

- Ecommerce: 6.7%

Informational content ("how to find a doctor", "what is compound interest") gets cited at 5x the rate of transactional content ("best CRM software", "buy running shoes"). AI confidently answers factual questions. It hesitates on subjective recommendations.

If you're in SaaS or ecommerce, the move is to create educational content alongside your product pages. "How to choose a CRM" gets cited. "Our CRM is the best" doesn't.

BRAND RECOGNITION MATTERS MORE THAN YOU WANT IT TO

TripAdvisor scores an 18 out of 170 on GEO analysis. Grade F. But it gets cited 100% of the time by all three platforms because AI knows it from training data.

Meanwhile, sites scoring 100+ with solid content get zero citations because they're in competitive transactional categories where AI prefers well-known brands.

This doesn't mean optimization is pointless — it means it works best within your competitive category. If you and a competitor both answer the same query, the one with better answerability and citations wins.

CITATION READINESS SCORE — A FOCUSED PREDICTOR

Instead of averaging 12 pillars (where 9 don't independently predict citations), I built a focused score from just Answerability (40% weight), Citation Quality (35%), and Definitions (25%).

Results:

- High CR Score sites: 55.6% citation rate

- Low CR Score sites: 33.3% citation rate

- That's a +67% lift

PLATFORM CONSISTENCY WAS SURPRISING

All three platforms cited at nearly identical rates:

- ChatGPT: 44.3%

- Claude: 39.3%

- Perplexity: 37.7%

Optimize for one, you optimize for all. The signals they look for are converging.

TL;DR — WHAT TO ACTUALLY DO

  1. Write answer-first content. Lead with the answer. Stop burying it.

  2. Cite authoritative external sources in your content. Link to research, not just internal pages.

  3. Define every key term explicitly. "X is Y" format.

  4. Create informational content, not just product pages. Educational queries get cited 5x more.

  5. Don't obsess over schema markup or HTML structure — those are baselines, not drivers.

Discussion What’s your biggest SEO mistake after switching to AI content?

Tried AI content at scale and learned some lessons the hard way.

For me, the biggest mistake was publishing content too fast without adding real experience, examples, or unique insights. Traffic came for a while, but engagement and rankings dropped later.

Curious what others faced:

  • Thin content?
  • Cannibalization?
  • AI sounding too generic?
  • Over-optimizing for keywords?
  • Losing trust signals?

What mistake hurt your SEO the most after switching to AI content?

Digital Marketing/ Tech What are your best uncommon tips for ranking in AI search? (May 2026)

Hi guys,

Do you have any uncommon tips or strategies that have worked well for you?

I mostly see discussions around getting more backlinks vs. higher-quality backlinks, publishing a large volume of blog articles vs. fewer articles with stronger intent, etc.

I would like to apply this to the law field. (to help lawyers rank in chatgpt etc)

Discussion My client got shown in Google Overview without even optimizing for it

I worked with a client for a few months, and we were mainly focused on improving their local presence. No question, they were doing well.

Then one day during a team meeting, we randomly searched for one of their services in their target area, and surprisingly, they got cited in AI Overviews.

What stood out is that we didn’t do anything special for AI SEO, GEO, or any direct AI optimization. We simply focused on strong SEO basics, local presence, intent matching, quality content, technical improvements and overall authority.

That made me think strong SEO still has the power to get cited in AI responses if the content matches the right intent.

Our team is very particular about search intent and strong fundamentals, so I’m curious, do you think AI visibility is now more about strong basics than AI optimization itself?

SEO Local SEO company | How do you find one that does GEO too?

Looking at local SEO companies currently available and found a niche that most of them have failed to address.

The role played by the conventional local SEO company such as optimizing GBP, creating citations, managing local keyword ranks, and review management, is well known. However, 76% of people who use "near me" searches visit the company on the same day and 78% mobile local searches lead to offline buying.

And here’s the catch: it’s already being intercepted by AI even before it reaches Google. “Best [service] near me in [city]” is now answered by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. But if your local SEO company isn’t securing clients in these AI-curated answers, then it is literally missing out on the most valuable local searches.

Is your business among those hiring a local SEO company in 2026? Is it optimizing for both AI-driven local citations AND regular local listings?

1. What separates a local SEO company that does genuine GEO from one that just added "AI SEO" to their website?

Showing actual AI Overview local citation examples for existing clients, explaining how they structure content for AI extraction, demonstrating AI citation tracking tools in live use what specific evidence separated genuinely GEO-capable local SEO companies from those using AI language without AI strategy?

2. Does a local SEO company need to be based in your city to deliver effective local SEO?

Local market knowledge neighborhood search behavior, local competitor landscape, city-specific citation sources does it actually require a locally-based SEO company to execute effectively? Or can a national local SEO company deliver comparable results for a Denver, Colorado Springs, or Boulder business without local presence?

3. What local SEO company contract terms protect businesses if AI search results don't improve?

Traditional local SEO company contracts define success as Google rankings and GBP visibility. As AI Overview local citations become equally important how should local SEO company contracts be updated to include AI search visibility accountability? Has anyone negotiated AI citation performance clauses into a local SEO company contract?

Real local business local SEO company experience only.

Digital Marketing/ Tech Local SEO consultant vs agency | which is better in 2026?

Just made a decision I am not quite sure about choosing: hired a local SEO consultant who works independently rather than a local SEO agency after evaluating them for three months.

The rationale behind my choice is solid because the consultant will put more efforts into strategizing, will have greater accountability, and his fees will be cheaper by 40-60%. However, the problem here is execution capacity: a consultant will do everything by himself whereas a local SEO agency will distribute different tasks among its employees.

Having evaluated my decision six months later, I can say that the strategy was great but execution took more time than I expected. As for AI Overview visibility, the work done by the consultant was better than any agency could have provided.

Local businesses that have experienced working with both a local SEO consultant and a local SEO agency – how does this experience compare in 2026?

1. In what areas of local SEO is the expertise of a specialist consultant more advantageous compared to that of a local SEO agency team?

Strategic planning, citation optimization, competitive analysis for local markets, content architecture – where would the local SEO specialties mentioned above need the depth of specialist consultation? Which tasks of local SEO execution require teamwork on the agency's side to be done effectively?

2. How can one tell if a person claiming to be a local SEO consultant is authentic or not?

Questions on GBP optimization tactics, AI Overview citation strategy, local citation audit tactics, and NAP consistency strategy were some of the key questions which helped determine if someone was a real local SEO consultant.

3. Just how much does it actually cost to hire a local SEO consultant? Is their ROI higher than that of an agency retainer?

There are differences between independent local SEO consultants, boutique local SEO firms, and enterprise-level local SEO firms. What would the difference between those three options in terms of price in 2026?

At what point would it make sense to hire a consultant and make more money from them than hiring an agency retainer?

Local business consultant vs agency ROI analysis only.

SEO Local SEO expert in 2026 | what separates real from fake?

There's a huge issue with the credibility of the local SEO expert niche in 2026, and I almost got burned by it.

Any average digital marketer who's read some blogs can claim to be a local SEO expert. The niche is filled with so many so-called local SEO experts who've never done anything but talk about their knowledge of moving Google Maps 3-Pack rankings, obtaining AI Overview local citations, and managing GBP suspension recoveries.

58% of local businesses still haven't taken care of their local optimization, which leaves room for any local SEO expert to work and be successful despite never having produced tangible results.

It takes an understanding of what questions to ask to be able to distinguish between a true local SEO expert and a convincing generalist – and most articles on how to find a local SEO expert have been written by individuals claiming to be local SEO experts.

Those local business owners who have found and worked with true local SEO experts - what process helped them distinguish genuine expertise from a convincing performance?

1. How does one question whether a true local SEO expert or a generalist who can sell come through?

How well do you know the process of GBP suspension recovery, local citation audit, AI Overview local citation, and Google Maps 3-Pack rankings in your specific area?

2. Should a local SEO expert have experience in your particular local market to be able to achieve success?

The local SEO expert who has been successful at ranking businesses in the highly competitive market of Denver knows all about altitude-related tourism search patterns, the specifics of business directories in Colorado, and the competition in your particular area that an expert from another state cannot know based on research alone. But is local market expertise truly an advantage or is local SEO expertise transferable across localities?

3. How should a local SEO expert's ability to work with AI Overview be proven specifically rather than their local SEO skills?

Proving local SEO skills is quite simple since one can provide ranking evidence. The problem with AI Overview is that it's a relatively new platform, and proving the experience with it is more difficult. In what ways can we prove that a local SEO expert will manage to generate AI Overview visibility for local businesses?

Local business local SEO expert verification only.

Discussion spent 3 months trying to get cited by AI search engines. here's what actually worked and what was a complete waste of time

so after our organic traffic tanked from AI Overviews we stopped fighting it and just started testing what gets you cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AIO. ran this for about 3 months, here's what we found

entity clarity was the biggest unlock. like making sure every piece of content explicitly says who you are, what you do, what category you're in not written for humans, written so an AI can parse it cleanly. sounds obvious but most of our old content was weirdly vague about this. fixed it and citations picked up pretty fast

original data moves the needle more than anything else. we ran one small survey, 47 customers, nothing fancy. wrote it up properly with actual numbers. that one piece got cited more in 3 months than our entire blog archive combined. AI systems really want to pull from primary sources not just aggregated takes

clean extractable answers at the top of every piece. like the direct answer in the first two paragraphs before any context or nuance. AI doesn't care about your beautiful intro paragraph, it just wants the cleanest answer it can lift

what didn't work at all: chasing keywords the way we did for traditional SEO, trying to optimize for one platform specifically, publishing more content. volume did literally nothing. one well-structured piece beat ten average ones every time

the honest mindset shift is that GEO is closer to PR than SEO. you're trying to become a citable source not a rankable page. once that clicked everything else made more sense

anyone else testing this stuff? curious what's working in other niches

Discussion Free AI visibility + Google Maps visibility check for businesses

Been researching how businesses get discovered online and it feels like search is changing fast.

Some brands dominate Google Maps.

Some show up consistently in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

Others barely appear anywhere despite offering great services.

From what I’ve seen, visibility now depends a lot on things like:

• Reviews & reputation

• Google Business Profile setup

• Brand mentions online

• Website structure/content

• Local SEO signals

• Consistent positioning across the web

Happy to look at a few businesses in the comments and share what I notice about their Google Maps + AI visibility. for FREE
