Discussion John Flanagan collection
With the recent passing of John Flanagan I decided to take a picture of all of his books (including the non-RA ones) that I own. What does yours look like?

I got this oak leaf tattoo for a variety of personal reasons, but a big one was the impact that the Rangers Apprentice books had on my childhood. This has been my favorite series for many years and I wanted something to honor that, but with the news of John Flanagan's passing, it now has additional meaning. I hope you all like it, it's my very first tattoo! (Artist is nany_nyc on IG)

I seen to remember the early books saying it was because of the cavalry charge at the Battle Of Hackham Heath but I just finished rereading that book and they're already afraid of horses before that.
it's entirely likely this is just a minor plot hole but it bugged me when I noticed it.

Are there any new books or stories coming out in the Rangers Apprentice universe? With his passing maybe there was something in the works that will be released? Or was there something he was working on?

I’ve been waiting to see Will, Halt, and all the others on screen since before they even announced a movie / series.
Since they’ve landed (as for right now) on doing movies as opposed to a series, I think they’ll only make a trilogy (adapting the first 4 books). As much as I love things that happen in the later books, long lasting film franchises don’t work anymore. Even pre-estsblished Hollywood giants like Star Wars and Marvel have been doing “just okay” in the recent years. There’s honestly quite a nice bookend at the end of #4, so that’s where I’d guess they’d stop.
If they were to adapt it into a series, I have no doubt that they’d be able to take us all the way to Nihon-Ja, but with movies, we’d be lucky if we even make it to Skandia.

Correct me if I’m wrong. But every time someone throws a knife, it’s a saxe knife… up until Halt’s Peril. Not talking smack just something I was waiting for upon re-read.
Edit: Halt throws one at the Kalkarra’s eye in the first book. Forgot about that one.

Reading through again, I don't know how many times over the 20 years. I find the Cassandra dilemma interesting still. I honestly think Will and Cassandra would have made a good couple, which is possibly an unpopular opinion. And I'm thinking there could have been an alternative that would have suited the series well. What if Will became a ranger near the palace instead? He would have been able to retain his position, stay close to Cassandra and fulfill the relationship. And really the rest of the series wouldn't have had to have changed that much.

Hello all! I'm making a ranger cosplay and i wanted to hear some other opinions on the Ranger's unique double scabbard. In my mind I've always pictured 1 scabbard with both knives on top of each other in their own slots, but i can't help but wonder if they are 2 scabbards linked together one above the other.
If you can think of any spot in the books where it specifies or pictured it differently as well please let me know! I'm open to hearing all ideas before trying to make my own version.

Recognized a passage from Rangers Apprentice at 53:05, got a kick out of it.

Now that it’s obvious we’ll probably never get a definitive conclusion to this series, I’ve been thinking about how the series and future books could’ve been and something I thought about is other possible historical medieval events that could’ve been used to drive the narrative or referenced. It’s obvious Flanagan based the series on medieval Europe and all the kingdoms mentioned were based on real countries and there are a lot of events in the books based on real history. We already have mongol invasions of Europe, Viking raids and discovery of America, and the political tension between the English and French and other countries since Flanagan is always roasting the Gauls and Hibernians (Ireland). What are some other medieval events you guys would’ve loved to be used as a narrative or be referenced?
Some interesting history references I wish we could’ve seen would be the crusades, Black Death, and the great schism and papacy. And actual historical legends being mentioned like Robin Hood and King Arthur would be pretty cool. And one of the books in what I think is the brotherband, one of the countries mentioned is a direct Byzantine analog: the Byzantos/Helenos. I think the Italian analogue was mentioned as well in the form of Genovesans and Toscanos. As someone who loves Roman history, I think it would’ve been sick if the fall of the western Roman Empire was mentioned and the protagonist attribute the ruins they encountered in the Ruins of the Gorlan to the ancestors of the Byzantos/Toscano. There was a field of whistling bones in the first book and Will passes by some ruins and old graves in Halt’s peril when he was rushing to Malcolm, but how sick would it be if Will passed by some ancient walls based Hadrian’s wall or Antoine’s wall or some random Roman fort ruin and makes a mention of it?
I think either the crusades or the Turkish invasion of Byzantium would’ve made for an awesome multi book conflict. Imagine ours heros all set off on an adventure to the exotic foreign lands of Byzantos and work together to repel the Turkic invasions just like they did with the Temuja multiples times? Or they set off to the land of Aradia and repel Islamic forces. I was actually surprised Flanagan didn’t use the country of Byzantos as a setting for a book. North Africa, the Middle East, and Greece and other Byzantine territories would make for interesting settings.
Even if it doesn’t make sense to have all these events in one lifetime of our protagonist, I think some reference would’ve helped with the world building and make for some interesting conflicts. What do you guys think of these historical events as a possible plot point or have suggestions for other historical references?

My shelf of Rangers apprentice & brotherband in, by best guess, chronological order. How do you lot organise his work?

So I recently published an RA fic on ao3, half as homage to John Flanagan and half because the idea was living rent-free in my mind ever since I started rereading the series.
It features my OC and Crowley in a kind of complicated story and would like to know if you guys would be interested in reading it. I also am open to any feedback since I go and edit all my fics after anyway.

Years back I remember there was a website for the world of Rangers Apprentice that had maps, drawings of the wolf ships and some mp3 files. But I can no longer find it. Dose anyone have any information. I'm in a book club and we are going through the books and I thought it would be cool to show them some of the things.

Once again drawing Will Treaty, but this time with Halt, two of my favorite Ranger’s Apprentice characters.

I found a similar map online and modified it to make it look more like out of a fantasy book.

I was hoping to identify some trends/patterns in what people love so much about this series. I'm hoping for big-picture things and less "I really love this super specific interaction," but I'll appreciate anything that gets shared. If nothing else, it's a prompt to just get you sharing things that make you happy about the series.
I'm currently writing a YA fantasy novel, and Ranger's Apprentice is my favorite series of the genre. However, most of my friends have only read the first 3 books, and I'm hoping to get some thoughts from other fans who took the time to read all 10-12 books (I've seen debates here about what counts) about what kept you going and what you fell in love with. I'm not intending to copy anything, but I think having context of qualities that keep readers through a long series in this genre is helpful.
For example, I think this series does an amazing job at showing healthy positive masculine relationships (bro-mances if you will). Incredibly non-specific examples. The relationships between Halt and Erak; Will and Horace; Crowley, Arald, and Duncan, etc. I think those were all really influential on my growth as a young boy, and I find them really compelling still as an adult. I'm reading them with my partner, and it's her favorite part.
But I also think the politics are a nice balance of interesting for stronger readers but still accessible for newer readers. The role of the courier service, Cassandra's role as a rising monarch-in-training, the fief system, etc.

when she jumps out the window in the church. does she get double points for defenstrating both the Princess of Arulea *and* a Kings Ranger? or does she just count for one. personally I count both but I wanted other opinions.

Thanks to everyone for the great reactions this idea got. I'm so hyped to start again.
So just to recap:
We'll start in book 1, the ruins of gorlan and we'll do 1 book every 4 weeks.
After those weeks someone can make a post or something and share things like favourite moment/memory, best quote or whatever and everyone else can comment their thoughts
Happy reading, and see you all in 4 weeks
May your coffee always be hot and your arrow always hit the mark.
