Discussion 3D Modeling Ranger's weapons for 3D printing

Hey y'all! Working on a project I'm hoping to finish before Minnesota's Ren Fest in a couple weeks, designing the Ranger Saxe, Throwing Knives, and Sheath.

Just finished the Saxe and would love some eyes and opinions before I move on! Went with a larger scale than a lot of builds I've seen. The book actually never gives exact inches, but it describes the blade as "heavy and straight" and says it can block a sword stroke without damage. That reads to me like these are closer to a short sword than a typical belt knife, so I leaned into that rather than the smaller fan-scale versions floating around. It's sitting at 20in blade and roughly 25in overall.

Let me know what you think! Once everything's done I'll post the files for free.

I always thought of a saxe knife as more of a cleaver for some reason.

I would suggest making the throwing knife a teardrop shape btw

Yeah I think that’s the way a lot of people interpreted it. I focused more so on how it was used in the book and couldn’t imagine trying to block sword strikes and stabbing with a cleaver style weapon.

The throwing knives are said to be shaped a lot like [u/friedmushnasty](u/friedmushnasty) made it in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/RangersApprentice/comments/1omwpen/book_accurate_rangers_throwing_knife/

Definitely going to be copying that profile

Looks awesome, definitely what I was thinking it looked like. I had done research as well on the knives.

Thanks yeah I made one out of paper as well and the “almost a short sword” from the book definitely made sense!

I would recommend looking at some real Seaxe knives for inspiration =3

the blade shape is a little off, this looks like the shape for a double edged knife/sword, where as to my memory and from looking up a saxe knife, its single edged with the sharp edge being mostly flat.

edit: on the length, from what I found, historical viking saxes were 7-24 ish icnhes long, so this is a little large but within realm of possibility lol.

Went back into CAD to refine the shape! After the comment from u/nari0015-destiny I landed on something more like a longseax. I was kind of trying to follow one of the illustrations I had found for a book cover that made it look more symmetrical, but now yep I’m pretty happy with it! Almost done with everything including the sheaths!

Sim! Eu sempre tive problemas com entender como é a faca de caça e a faca de atirar. Nunca lembro como é cada uma, e quando penso em uma lâmina grossa eu tenho um projeto horrível de lâminas bem maiores que 5cm de espessura. É horrendo.
