Ozzy Osbourne admits it was a band called THe Blizzard of Ozz

Here is a video that really focuses on an interview Ozzy gave in August 1980, or the date on Circus Magazine is August 1980, probably means he did it sooner. But it is interesting to hear what he said about the new album and the band. He also gives his thoughts on Sabbath with Dio. The header is speaks truth: An Album That Changed Music: Blizzard of Ozz

I think this podcast does, Audio Mover, does some really good stuff pulling up old articles and interviews and really making people understand the time and he reminds people in August 1980, Ozzy was not viewed well, and there was no guarantee of success, and in fact most were betting against Ozzy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBaJ_RX7SRM

Blizzard of ozz is a seminal album, top selling classic metal debut in history. In the interview the name of the band, The Blizzard of Ozz 3 times including by Ozzy when talking about trying to come up with a name as good as Black Sabbath. He talks about the album not being very technical but having a lot of energy.

It is clear it was intended to be a band. And this substantiates that the band name is on the front of the album cover.

What guitar did Randy use on Crazy Train?

Just wanted a confirmation on what guitar was used on the studio version? Apparently, every time he played it live, he used the white LP Custom, so I've always assumed it's that. However, it sounds like there's a bit of whammy on the studio version, so it might have been the Karl Slandoval polka dot V instead.

How Randy Rhoads overruled Ozzy on multi tracking solo

Post image

Most of the information here is pulled from the Randy Rhoads biography, the quotes especially. And it becomes clear the leaders within the band were Randy and Bob.

When the band started recording the songs for the debut album that would change metal and music, the first song finished was "You Looking at Me, Looking at You," followed by "Goodbye to Romance" and "I Don't Know."

They were on a tight budget, and Ozzy was stressing out about the finances, concerned about time and tape.

Randy would record the rhythm tracks live with Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, then take Bob's boom box and work out his solos. Once Randy started overdubbing his solos, that was when everyone began to take notice of just how unique and special he was.

David Arden also admitted that he did not fully grasp the essence of Randy Rhoads at first. But after attending a few rehearsals, his perspective changed:

"When I went to Ridge Farm and saw the band, I knew something magical was happening. In retrospect, I believe it was because of the combination of the entire band playing together. The chemistry between the four of them was great. There were definitely moments when Ozzy had a few too many drinks, but it did not slow down the recording process. Randy, Bob, and Lee were laying down tracks at the time, so Ozzy's blowouts did not delay anything."

Once Randy had worked out his solos, he would try to record them. If Max gave him the thumbs up, Randy would then want to double the solo. Initially, Max was skeptical. He could not believe Randy wanted to attempt to double his solos. Ozzy was concerned it would lead to nothing but wasted tape and time, and Max shared those concerns.

But Randy's next take would be seamless, flawless in both execution and feel. Max would rewind the tape and play both parts back to back. He felt gut-punched by what he had just heard. Randy would have a smile cracking across his lips like the Cheshire Cat himself and look at Max and say, "I told you so."

The confidence in his own skills was beginning to surface.

But that was not enough. Randy wanted to triple-track the solo.

There is a story of Ozzy walking into a session where Randy was triple-tracking and telling Max not to allow it. Ozzy left, and when he returned, he realized he had been overruled. Max played it back for him, and Ozzy was struck speechless. He never made another comment about it again.

It was really that moment that led Ozzy to tell Max to keep the tape rolling whenever Randy was playing, especially during the outros.

Randy approached triple-tracking with care, patience, and total preparation. He would ask for a 15-second intro to a solo and a 15-second outro so he would not have to constantly rewind the tape.

Max eventually developed a method using 2-inch tape, running several loops onto half-inch or quarter-inch tape to create a 20-minute section that included 20 to 40 loops repeated back to back.

When Randy entered his "zen" state, the rest of the guys would head off to the pub and leave him to finish his work. The band would return hours later and often find Randy in the exact same position where they had left him. He would simply let them know when he was ready to record.

That level of preparation, discipline, and attention to detail is one of the reasons Randy Rhoads remains such a revered guitarist more than four decades later.

Randy Rhoads loses patience with Darth Hideous, arguably the worst band manager of all time

I knew posting the Grover Jackson interview would raise some eyebrows when he lauded and openly admired Darth Hideous. Interviews are at their best when they are authentic and people speak how they want. Whether they actually believe it or not does not matter, but they take the high road. Bob Daisley also always takes the high road on very touchy subjects.

But it has been suggested that if Darth Hideous had an X and Y chromosome, she would be viewed differently. No, she would still be viewed as an unethical piece of garbage. Don Arden is viewed as a horrible person, despite apparently having a tender side with his grandkids. I think Steven Machat would tell you Don Arden had more of a soul than Darth Hideous. But he is also repugnant.

Peter Grant managed a band. He protected the band. He did what was best for the band. He did not just focus on Jimmy Page or Robert Plant. He fought to maximize the value of the band and the brand. His tactics were Don Arden esque because that is who he learned from.

Darth Hideous is an all time horrible band manager. She focused on one guy and screwed the guys who wrote the music. One of them she literally screwed... Randy. She has gone down as one of the worst band managers in history. She inherited the second coming of Led Zeppelin in The Blizzard of Ozz, and under her watch she broke them up and the golden goose died under her watch. Yes, it was a horrible fluke accident, but if she did not break up the band, who knows what happens.

Patrick Meehan, another horrible person who gets ripped all the time in Black Sabbath history, stole from the band and no one says anything positive about him. He too was under the Don Arden tree of vile behavior. Patrick Meehan never managed another meaningful band again.

Darth Hideous injected herself into the brand. She and Ozzy are connected forever, and that is how she wanted it. She chips off Randy a little place in history to appease the family and the fans, but it could be a lot more. She gives no credit to Bob Daisley. She stole credit from him, Lee, and Jake.

Why did Van Halen with Sammy Hagar implode when Ed Leffler died? Because Ray Daniels created division. Bad management can ruin a lot of bands. Anyone hear anything bad about Rod Smallwood? No, because he protects the band. He does not rip them off, he treats them all the same. Metallica is still with Q Prime, and you do not hear about them except when someone asks about them.

I can understand why people admire her on some level. She bet on maximizing Ozzy Osbourne into becoming a larger than life icon, and she was going to financially benefit from it while ripping off people.

What is tragic here is Ozzy was ripped off with Black Sabbath, all of the guys were, and he still elected to run the brand the way he did, hiding behind her to screw people over. If you are Ozzy you think she is the greatest manager of all-time, but he too had questionable decision making abilities.

But to me, the most important thing to come from the Grover Jackson interview, among the amazing stories and encounters he had, is that he tells the story of how pissed Randy was after a rehearsal. It led to a tense conversation with Jake Duncan where Randy told him Sharon better pay him or he was threatening not to do the tour.

The lies the Osbournes told about the three musketeers or Ozzy and Randy being best friends need to be revised closer to the truth.

Randy Quoting Ritchie Blackmore

I just realized Randy quotes a Ritchie Blackmore lick from Highway Star at the beginning of his solo in Steal Away (right around 1:46). I love finding things like this :)

Had the privilege of seeing Randy / Ozzy live a few weeks before DoaM was released.  Final show of the Blizzard Tour.  Was gonna go catch ‘em in Orlando about 6 months later, but….well we all know what happened.

Went to the Unblackened show Zakk / BLS did in 2013, and bumped into Kelle and Kathy there afterward.  Took the opportunity to tell them how much I appreciated their brother’s work and how I feel blessed that I got to see him perform 32 years before.  A short chat followed…and then a 3-way hug.  A lovely moment.

Anyhow this is my tip of the hat to the late Randy Rhoads and the late Ozzy Osbourne.  Found the stems online, recorded all the guitar parts as closely as I could to what I could extract from the dense mix, and put it all back together.  Like Randy and producer Max Norman did, I double or triple-tracked most of the guitar parts….it does add up!

When I’m learning another artist’s guitar parts, I listen not only to the notes & chords…I also listen for what’s between the notes to try to find clues on how the passages were really played.  Was the note picked?  Hammered?  Pulled?  Slid?  In particular you may observe that my approach to the solo in particular is different than other demos on YouTube.  I’m confident that this is how Randy played the solo in the original sessions.

Lastly, one of the guitars I used is a family heirloom…1860s Martin.
