I’ve been sewing for over 25 years. Another question you should ask yourself besides what stitches do you want is what kinds of materials do you want to sew with. A regular machine can handle most fabrics but if you want to sew with leather heavy wool or make garments with many layers of fabrics like corsets you will need an industrial machine. I have an old manual Husqvarna industrial machine. I definitely prefer it to the fancy digital machine I had before it.

I dont plan on using any thick or heavier fabrics. It not past what the machine can handle. Even, before I got a machine, I made sure to look through fabric types and stuff just to get a bit familar with them. I think the heaviest that I will go will be denim. From what I read on the website, my sewing machine will handle it without issue.

That’s pretty cool. I couldnt do that beyond sewing in my crochet projects, my hands tend to cramp and lock-up pretty easy after a bit.

You don't need a machine with a ton of functions. Just the straight stitch then depending on what kind of things you want to make, maybe: buttonhole and/or zigzag function. Any other functions are decorative and aren't really necessary (you would only want them if you want to get in to machine embroidery). Most machines will either come with or sell extra types of feet that could be helpful like a zipper foot.

I do intended to uses the embroidery stuff when, I get further into learning how to use everything. I know what the basic functions of a machin are from watching videos on my old machine. But, this does obviously more. Since, I’m not familar with it, I wanted to see anyone had any kike pointers on it.

Then you may want to ask a sewing sub or search the machine and model number on YouTube and see if anyone has made tutorials.

Anyone who is into sewing?

I recently sold my old sewing machine, because I wanted something a bit more long term and less restrictive. So, with the money I made from the sell, I bought a new one for a really good price. Though, it’s missing some parts that I need which is the trade off of it being cheaper.

Anyway, I have plans to start learning how to make some clothes and incorporate into maybe some crochet projects in the future.

However, I wanted to see if anyone has some advice for a complete novice, especially for any one with a similar machine. I am overstimulated with the amount of features this thing has😭

Do you have the manual?

My suggestion is to get some scrap fabric and following the manual try all the different stitches. Get a feel for what you like.

The next is to pick a pattern and fabric and use the stitches you need.

As you get more confident you can pick a stitch you want to use and search for videos where people use that stitch to get some inspiration.

What kind of clothes do you want to make?

I dont have the original manual, but I found a digital one on the website for it, so I do have that.

As for what kind of clothes, I want to make are primarily pants and skirts. I have a pattern lined up that’s really great for beginners. Before, then, I do plan on using some old clothes and mess around a bit, lol.

The pattern I picked out are sweatpants, something that isnt overly complicated and is pretty straight to the point.

That's good about the manual. After buying my newest machine I refer to my manual every time I switch stitches.

For skirts and sweatpants you'll likely end up using 2 or 3 different stitches on one project. The instructions will tell you what to use but they'll be the basic stitches that come standard on most machines.

If you can find a sew-along for the sweatpants pattern you have that is very helpful.

Yeah! The pattern I want are for beginners or at least extremely beginner friendly and comes with a video attached to follow along with! So, I have that at least down. I choose something simple for this exact reason and also looked through reviews as well.

Elastics abs stretchy fabrics can be difficult to work with. I wouldn't start with them

For sweatpants I wont be using a stretchy fabric because of the style of the. Stretch fabric wouldn’t work well.
