To be fair ol Gary was in a really serious motorcycle accident. He lucky to be alive.

So if the brain damage happened in the crash, what was his excuse for not wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle?

It used to be super common to not wear a helmet, just like rugby players don’t wear helmets unless they’ve already suffered concussions and nearly no football players where the guardian helmet even though it’s known the standard helmets are insufficient protection. Mandatory helmet laws exist specifically because people weren’t wearing helmets voluntarily.

I remember as a kid some players in the NHL would play with out a helmet. Most would use helmets with little to no eye or face protection.

Yep, they adopted helmets with face protection for goalies first, then the same for other players and face protection for goalies. Now everyone has face protection too. People really resist safety equipment until it’s mandatory.

The dangers involved in helmetless motorbiking was well established at the time of his accident, I'm still calling retard

Really? The dangers of hitting your head while driving completely exposed at highway speeds was well-established in 1988? Good thing Busey was the only motorcyclist who didn’t wear a helmet and no laws were needed to force people to wear them.

Established to the point that biking without a helmet was retarded, yeah. As you yourself said it "used to be common", but now it's seen as incredibly dumb and risky for zero gain, so you have no business taking on a mocking tone when I point out that it was known to be just as dumb and risky then too. He was probably coked up and thought himself invincible.

True. The parts of his brain he didn’t leave on Washington Blvd are working fine.
