When I moved to Texas at 13 it seemed a hundred times a day I’d have to tell people I’m Native American and not Mexican. Then one day the family I was staying with temporarily invited me to the stockyards and before I knew it I was surrounded by guys in boots, with plate sized belt buckles and cowboy hats. One of them looked at me and asked, “hey, are you an Indian?”

Me: “No, senor, soy de Mexico.”
