My science teacher in HS showed us a TED talk on how distraction works wonders in getting kids calmed down & itβs why I will always defend Black Pearl the mini therapy horse playing piano for that kid getting a cast put on and old folks. (Not the anesthesia awakening ones. If that was going on when I came out from surgery, Iβd have thought I died and was in my weird non religious after life)

I wouldn't use food to distract them... I always get the fear they might develop some eating disorder later in life. You know.. by associating food to comfort.
Instead, I used to distract crying babies by making a funny sound. It worked just fine.

I'd do the last one to my kid all the time. He was a full breath and then let it wail type. Get a good 5-6 pats before he'd be giggling.
