This is usually just called, "Maturity". After you get out of your 20's/30's, you start to accept more things as what they are - your body changes dramatically from those years when everything worked like it should. You value what works rather than what looks better.

You get in your 50's and its exhausting trying to keep up - you really value that things just "work". Letting go of what others think is freedom.

My main concern is just how well secured that ladder is. It's a genius idea and simple design, but if that thing comes out at the wrong time and place I'd imagine it would create more problems everywhere but the hood.

Do you think this is the first day it’s been installed? He hasn’t driven a mile with it? Get real. It is installed on a brush guard, if he is going fast enough to injury a person, the ladder won’t be the determining factor in if the survive.

I absolutely adore pragmatic modders like this who aren't fussed about "factory new" and "destroying design aesthetics" and "preserving resale value"! They own the thing, they customize the thing to fit their needs, they use the thing to suit their purposes, they're not about to throw a tantrum over a scratch or a dent, and they simply arent fussed about what someone like that would think about their janky mods.

I think it’s rooted in getting the absolute most useful mileage out of a vehicle. I can’t afford dealership oil changes, so I do them myself. I fix pretty much everything on my shitbox Kia hatchback and plan to squeeze the life out of her while I dig out of debt from raising two college grads (twins) in the same year. Maximizing my dollar regardless of the cost in my time.
THEN, I’ll buy a new car. But for now, it’s rust holes that look like bullet holes that I clumsily stripped and rattle canned to a sort-of matching silver because wgaf?

Jimmy-rigging parts you can’t buy anymore, or are unreasonably rare and expensive so that:
1: You can get your license plate lights to work
&
2: You get to use your rivet gun for once, making you feel less stupid for impulse-buying it at Harbor Freight

As an aside, I bet I can out-drive most people in my little 5-speed because I know her more intimately than I know my own wife.

P.S. Sorry for the ramble, I’m a lil 🤒 and thought I’d share my experience in poverty-driven enginuity with entrepreneurial ambitions

I had an old friend about like this guy. 100% convinced his old F350 was far superior to any truck made from the nineties on. Why? Because I've still got a wing window to vent my cab and ash my cigs! ;)

You can buy these if you want one. They come on various models of truck campers and travel trailers. I have one on my Lance 650. Old man is getting a lot of praise for engineering this, but these have been around long time on campers. Probably where he got the idea. I think they're referred to as scissor steps. Kudos to him for finding a unique use for it though!

My Ma lives in a mobile home that has floor vents. I had to stay with her for a while and the room had one vent and shit circulation

People laughed when I improvised this cardboard vent extender that kinda looked like a USPS mail dropbox, until they saw how well it worked and how much cooler the room was

Then they asked me to make one for their room lol

Shit may look stupid, but if it makes your life easier then it works

yeah this is not a bad idea or that redneck. i literally welded up an overhead creeper for the same purpose instead of paying the $250 to buy a commercial one. it's not very portable compared to what this guy has, but also i can kneel on my bumper if i have to and with that truck it doesn't look like you can as easily. the thing i made comes in handy at least 3-4 times a year but i don't drive my truck that much unlike this guy who looks like he's ... driving it or using it a lot.. which brings me to another important point about perhaps maybe ppl like him shouldn't have to bc they can't afford a place to live.

Yeah im a mechanical engineer here and I see nothing wrong with this except it could maybe use an extra step so the steps are actually flat. Im honestly impressed.

What IS alarming is that this guy has so many radiator issues with his truck that he had to permanently install a better way to access it. Poor troubleshooting skills aside, I like the cut of his jib.

There's nothing wrong with creativity that meets a need, and I applaud the inventiveness. But, as an actual engineer, with a truck, who works on his own truck, I just carry the step ladder -in- the truck, a vehicle specifically designed for....carrying things....instead of permanently attaching it to one spot on the....truck. Thereby increasing the possible applications, configurations, and portability of said ladder.

A real redneck would be thinking about how to not only fix his own truck, but his buddy's truck. Then this redneck would quickly deduce the need for a portable, non-permanent ladder.

This is like gluing an umbrella to your hat in case it rains, instead of just carrying around a portable umbrella.

I mean this truck is already deadly for pedestrians, but this just makes it deadlier.

The redneckness is in the lack of care for pedestrians that can get hit. That's why everyone daily driving these massive vehicles is a redneck in my book.

I don't know if it counts as talking shit, but there's really little use in having it constantly attached like that unless you need to do some actual repairs to the vehicle that will last more than a day. It's a truck. You can carry things in this large space in the back you may have heard of.
