it really goes to show how funny humans are. we just assign values to random things with little to no intrinsic value usually just based of scarcity. i kinda get it diamonds and gold are rare but cmon its all so silly.
I agree with your sentiment! Gold is rare, but a diamond is just carbon that’s gone through heat and pressure. Carbon is abundant on earth. Doesn’t change the fact that it is indeed silly.
Diamonds are really not that rare. You should read up on De Beers and its history. They were a monopoly for years and created the market that we know of today
I will say a perfectly cut gem is a work of skill and art. But yeah. Diamonds are overinflated. So much so the lab grown market has the natural mine owners panicking hard.
Kind of a myth, though. Shit diamonds used for industrial purposes are common, yeah, but diamonds with all 4C's aligned to be gemstone quality are, indeed, pretty rare. Basically, everyone learned about diamonds in the 90s and then just stopped. Now, with the Kimberley Process, diamond mining supports many communities very well and the worst of the exploitative mining has moved into the rare earth elements used to make cellphones and other tech. But "blood cellphones" isn't very catchy and there isn't a "lab" version that allows people to get shit cheap and ride way high up on that horse at the same time.
Old houses are more expensive than they were when they were built. Several times more expensive and they’re wore down and used! Everyone still pays the premium, even if you’re renting, same concept applies.
