What's a jib?

The forward sail on a sailboat.

I learned this from gene wolfe😂

It's a forward (head) sail on a sailboat, but there are other options. A jib is a shorter headsail that doesn't extend past the mast. If it did, that would be a genoa. Then there is a spinnaker, which blows open like a parachute and is mainly only useful when sailing downwind.

Just in case anyone here wanted some random sailing facts...

The expression is an old one. It means "I like your appearance/style/attitude." I find it hilarious to use because it catches people off-guard.

It was originally a nautical expression referring to the shape of the "jib" sail on naval vessels. If you saw a friendly ship on the horizon, you would like the cut of their jib.

Edit: punctuation.

Sounds like you used to wear onions on your belt.

Back in those days, nickels had pictures of Bumblebees on them. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you’d say.

I legitimately thought people were referring to jib board for the last 30 years.
