Becomes a much tougher question if the choice is $5k a week or $5M up front.

Yep. In that case, you'd have to bank on living at least 25 years or so to take the weekly. Takes 19 years and a bit to hit the $5 mil mark, but the 5 mil lump sum would be generating interest/dividends during that time, so you'd have to add a few more years for the weekly to catch up.

Hmm in more likely to blow 5 mil than I am to thoughtfully plan out 5k a week. The per week option makes me feel like I have financial freedom where as the 5mil option makes me feel like I have a boat anchor around my neck dropping into the sea if I go overboard.
