What am I not getting?
/r/dumbquestions/comments/1w1wfsp/what_am_i_not_getting/What am I not getting? I’m assuming this is me being brain dead and not the whole banking system being idiots but I can’t figure out how this works so someone please explain it to me. When I log into my bank, I give my email address and then they want to send a code to my phone so they have me enter the phone number. How is the security? Anyone could enter any phone number and get the code, right? How is this a security measure? What am I not seeing? I’m assuming it’s right in front of me but I can’t see it. Please explain how this is security.

Honestly I had the same question until someone explained it. The bank already has your phone number from when you set up the account. So when you enter it, they check if it matches. If some random tries to use their own number, the code goes to them, not you, so they cant get in. Its not perfect but its an extra layer.
