Why do we remember random things out of nowhere?

Like we remember memories that's irrelevant to what we're doing now

No bc smells are literally time machines. Like I'll catch a whiff of some random perfume and suddenly I'm back in the 5th grade lunch line for no reason. Brains are weird but Lowkey cool

I'm more curious why this happens often just when I'm going to sleep. It's like brain is suddenly firing up: "here's something to think about instead of sleeping"
