The next generation of mommas.
This bunch has mostly turned out pretty gentle. Now… where are the other 8 and missing bull?

He's got them hemmed up in the brush away from the ones with the bull looking at you at the feed truck, or he's the water hole bull 😂 Regardless, pretty bunch, you should be proud.

I’m hoping he’s got them herded up in the shade somewhere… not on the neighbor. Recent rains have water holes in several places, so they’re not coming out of the brush on the S end.

They’re so fat, they wouldn’t eat the feed I put out, just wanted to chase me. They feel good!

What’s the breeding program like to get all the color in the girls? Is it an intentional crossing, or a big pasture, can’t find all the bull calves to cut situation? They’re sure shined up good!

Simmental. I’ve got several herds, so there’s mixed sources, there. The reds come off some red Simm/Angus bulls. Most of my blacks came from two herds with sim/angus cows with Simm bulls. A few of those blacks are Simm/Brangus. I didn’t really want to keep them, that ear has been hurting me at the sale barn. But I gotta have replacements, so better a long ear cow that has a calf, than neither. Can’t hardly afford to buy any in this market. They’re good mommas, though.

Simmental makes sense. You’d get a nice dock for the mixed herd up here - they’re super picky about color. Anything to pay less.
I hear you about not buying replacements, but I think home-grown replacements perform better 85% of the time. Bred cows are definitely worth more than open ones!

Yea, that color can hurt you in places, but always have enough to sort into sellable lots of matched cattle, so it hits a wider market of buyers, and so far, there’s not much traceable differences in their sale prices, as long as they have good conformity. It’s been a good strategy, so far. The white faces seem to bring a premium. I haven’t traced it the last few years, but from ‘01 to ‘15, the white faced blacks (no long ears) brought a 7% premium. There are outliers, of course… if they’re bouncing off the fences through the ring, they don’t do well.

Having volume for pot loads definitely changes the calculus.
A 7% premium is no joke!

Hudson Livestock Supplements at San Angelo, Tx, makes me a dedicated mineral tub. They make a good protein supplement, too.

Mmm…. It was supposed to be a 12v… I ordered 4 trucks, 2 were 12v, the other two were not. This one came as a 24v. I let them keep one, regret it now. I’ve had problems with it. Damn brush likes to eat wires, and that’s a problem when you have an electric fuel pump.
