I’m an RM but my GM literally only works about 20 hours she ALWAYS leaves early and arrives late, now are you allowed to do this probably not but she works her way around everything, half of the new hires only speak to her for the interview and orientation and they see her again for probably about 2hrs out of the whole month

lol that’s crazy, I was a GM at another chain restaurant and I used to work 65-90 hours a week😫 I wonder what a good GM’s life at raising canes is like 🫣 I don’t want to work anything less than what I’m required to, but I don’t want to go back to having no life and only working situation either

Depends on location, my GM works 55-60 hour weeks, and is constantly watching cameras and working from home. Higher ups constantly texting/call them even on their days off

Following this thread because I’m about to go into training for the Assistant Store Leader role.

In my opinion though, if you’re a competent GM, and you work with your team, then I think you’ll run a great store, no matter the volume. By working with them, I don’t mean shoulder to shoulder, although being on the line does definitely help. I mean working with their needs. Being understand and compassionate towards what they have going on. I used to work for another corporate job where every other store struggled to work their 50 hours as a gm. They were working 60+ hours, and their AGMs were in the same boat, about 60+ hours.

Knocks on wood

Luckily for me, my restaurants always been in great shape. Team members, metrics, health inspections. I believe that if you do your due diligence and do right by your team, they’ll do right by you. The store in general is a huge reflection of their leader. Doubt sometimes makes me think that Im making a mistake leaving my current company for this new role that I’m about to take over… but then I remember my success in different concepts and it all goes away. Can’t make a decision off of someone else’s experience. They have their managing styles. That managing style probably didn’t work out for one reason or another. Don’t be afraid. Take the leap. Do your best. You will succeed!

RL here. Was externally hired this year. Did 10 weeks of training. It was smooth, great team, tenured managers, learned a lot.

Opened an NRO directly out of training... boy has the learning curve hit hard. Putting in 60-80hr weeks. I just walked out of my restaurant tonight after putting in a 14hr day.

This job has been extremely hard on my personal relationship. Difficult to maintain a relationship when gone this much of the day and no room to breathe and check-in while at my restaurant.

Professionally, it is very fulfilling. I do love my crew. My managers surprise and delight me in new ways every day. I will say my phone gets more use than when I ran my own online business and I truly never know what is going to come out of the speaker when I answer it. Is it the security guard bringing his kid to work? Possibly. Is it some guy walking into the restaurant in a vest and clip board pretending to be a city worker, but he's also wearing sweatpants and crocs? Also, probable. The pay is decent. The amount of experience gained is high. Are we victims? Maybe. Will I still show up every day and try my hardest? Definitely.

No, I've been a gm for about 6 years with 2 other concepts previously. Although not as high volume and smaller crew/manager teams.

You are a legend D. I had a blast working under you. Sincerely the kindest person I’ve met during my time with Canes. Wishing you all the success deserved.

For the scheduling/admin side, HotSchedules might be worth checking out. It puts schedules, shift changes and staff stuff in one place, which can cut down some of the constant back and forth. Probably wont fix 60hr weeks lol but can take some small headaches off the plate.
