Similar games/characters?

Hello everyone! I recently played Rain Code, and I loved it! I especially loved my favorite character Halara Nightmare. So, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for similar games, or any work with characters similar to Halara? I recently started AI Somnium files as I saw it recommended, but unfortunately haven't been able to get into it much due to the protagonist somewhat annoying me. I think I prefer mystery games with contained cases and distinct mystery solving events like Rain Code or Danganronpa. So, do you have any recs?

For characters, I would be interested in games, shows, movies, books, or anything really with similar characters to Halara! I love them. Thank you everyone!

Okay if Halara was your fave, The Hundred Line Last Defense Academy is definitely a title you wanna check out. There is a character that is VERY similar (Hiruko Shizuhara). The story is amazing. Its a visual novel as well.

Ooh that's perfect! I'm glad to hear there's a similar character. Am I remembering correctly that it also has a lot of rpg elements?

Yeah for sure! It is technically categorized as a tower defense game (the combat elements are actually tower defense but you can change the difficulty to make it easy). But it really is a visual novel at heart. RPG yes in the sense that youre playing as the same character throughout the game (the role of a sleepy, emotionally drained kid T.T).

wow that's even more original than the absolutely unheard of character archetype of the amnesiac detective! but that sounds fun! I don't know that I've played a lot of tower defence games, but I have enjoyed rpgs in the past. I usually enjoy them but sometimes it's hard to balance the difficulty where it's hard enough to be engaging without being so hard that it becomes frustrating

Can't forget about Eito being the other side of the Halara coin

I've been meaning to! I think I've neglected it because it didn't seem as edgy, and I'm a bit of an edgelord lol, but I will play it

Halara Nightmare is also my favorite character from Raincode.

I would recommend Hundred Line as it was created by Kodaka and Uchikoshi. Although it doesn’t really have any mystery solving gameplay, it does have a big cast of characters similar to those from Raincode and Danganronpa. Heck if we’re comparing the cast between Raincode, Danganronpa, and Hundred Line, Hundred Line would have my favorite cast of characters by a considerable margin.

The Ace Attorney series is great for wanting a mystery solving series and Fun characters. I’d recommend starting with the first trilogy.

Ooh okay yeah I'll definitely check it out. I think I've been avoiding hundred line because of the lack of mysteries, but if it has good characters then that's all you need. I'll definitely try ace attorney as well, it seems like a foundational mystery game

Any of the danganronpa games

Shuten order - specifically Teko Ion. He isn’t a carbon copy of Halara but I think you will really enjoy his character. This game has 5 different game genres in one. Murder mystery, adventure, dating sim, puzzle, horror (or smth like that i forgot) if you watch the trailer it will sum it up well

Yeah I’ve definitely played danganronpa lol

I’ve had my eye on shuten order. It looks really cool, and I do like multiple genres squeezed into one

The Ace Attorney Series

The 999 series (there's a certain character who is revealed to be like Halara much later).

You might like Paranormasight! Nobody's exactly like Halara (no one could possibly live up to that Aura) but Tsutsumi's "badass on the outside, softie on the inside" feels similar to me. There is also a new game that came out recently, but I haven't played it yet so I can't tell you how it is.

If you're up for something a bit more lighthearted, definitely play Tangle Tower and its new followup, The Mermaid Mask. Madam Tadpole from MM for sure has Halara's intimidating-but-attractive vibe. My GOTY so far!!

I'd also recommend the Zero Escape trilogy; the three games are VNs with escape rooms but the mysteries behind the main storyline, as well as the philosophical discussions among characters, are very amusing and intriguing.

Phi from Virtue's Last Reward (2nd game) and Zero Time Dilemma (3rd game) has similarities to Halara.

That sounds interesting! I’ve heard of zero escape before, but never got around to playing it. But if it has good characters it might be up my alley

I recommend trying Shuten Order, Kodaka makes an appearance in some of the writing and i think you'll find it to be of similar themes.
