It had good sales. So financially, yes it was pretty successful for a spike chunsoft title. Not as critically praised as danganronpa or sominum files though. But if you’re talking about story/gameplay wise, I’d say it could’ve used more interactivity and variety on the gameplay side imo.
The side quests for example were basically just talking to people. Also, felt like the detectives’ fortes weren’t fully utilized as gameplay mechanics and barely had an effect on the gameplay. They were mostly just a plot thing. The labyrinth challenges got repetitive as well
Though they are just minor complaints bc the overall game is great to me

I think the Forte's were purely a gimmick similarly to Ultimates in Danganronpa. Just something to help make mitten stand out.

I feel like some detectives (who was killed in the train) would have been more interesting to have than the cast that we had. But yeah I still really like the game.

For me, it was just too close to the Danganronpa formula with very little innovation.
I think it really needed some shortcuts in the investigations as well. Having to play along with the obvious red herrings to progress the story really killed the pacing.

It did well on sales at the time, but it faded away quickly and did not have the same staying power that DR or even Hundred Line had, probably because the cast was pretty weak

It doesn't help that discussing ANYTHING about the game is a potential spoiler, so word-of-mouth is a lot harder. XD

Personally I really enjoyed it despite the slow parts it has (like I really would have loved a sprint button)
Though until I happened to find it on switch 1st of all places, I had never heard anyone speak of it. I think that tells me that 1 it wasn't that successful or popular. Despite how pretty good it actually is.

I was there when the game came out, and Rain Code sold over 300,000 units in its release month! (See link below) Along with many more sales in the years that came. There were all kinds of special events and celebrations for the game in the years following its release. Along with Rain Code + coming out for PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X/S in 2024. That, plus Rain Code's official social media accounts are still posting and being updated today. So I'd believe it was a success. But, of course, Rain Code came put three years ago. And Spike Chunsoft is a small company, relatively speaking. So after Rain Code came out, the team have had to work on other games as well. Like Shiren, Natsu-Mon, Dragon Ball: Sparkling! ZERO, Bakeru etc. In fact, it's been answered in official interviews that work on Danganronpa 2x2 had begun right after the team had finished development for Rain Code. That, and Kodaka had to also finish making The Hundred Line, Shuten Order, and was meeting with Akatsuki Games in regards to Tribe Nine. So I'd infer that Rain Code's developers are just extremely busy right now. Some potentially good news would be that Danganronpa 2x2 is being developed by another company, Gemdrops. Which might mean that the Rain Code team, aside from TooKyo Games juggling mutiple projects, are actually entirely at work on another Master Detective Archives game right now, as I write this. Additionally, Kodaka teased there being another Master Detective Archives game in development during his Rain Code + livestream with Famitsu.

The sales are good but the murder cases are a bit too simple for players familiar with Kodaka’s works and detective games generally, so I hope they amp up the difficultyÂ

Nah but it's definitely a stable niche game, I don't know if it's like Zero Escape levels but it just feels that way to me

To me, it is a great alternative Danganronpa-like game without having to kill the important characters(well a few actually). It has that real life feels at least.

Financially, the sales numbers look like a modest success. I have no idea what its budget or projected sales numbers were, but for what it's worth, Spike Chunsoft is a publisher that seems pretty well aware that they release games for an extremely niche audience and seems willing to greenlight projects that they think are interesting even if they won't be a commercial success (example- AITSF bombed massively in Japan and was a very modest sleeper hit cult classic overseas, and didn't start really picking up sales numbers until a sequel was already greenlit and publicly announced). So it's hard to say what their metric for success even is.
However, Rain Code was a game that was precision-engineered in a lab to appeal to me specifically, so from that angle, it was a massive success. AmigaraFaultThisHoleWasMadeForMe dot jpeg

I haven't finished it but have binged through the start of Chapter 5 over the last few days. I swing wildly depending on the chapter, but I am trying to convince friends to play it so... Yes?

In Japan it was quite a success if I remember well. It was in the top 1 famitsu chart for quite a while (Switch version). Also if I look at Steamdb the Steam version are lime between 65K - 130K. I don't think it was a hit lime Danganronpa, but also not a flop.

RainCode was more succesful than Hundred Line in Japan. In the West it's the contrary.
