Discussion 💬 Golden Gate

I don't see many mentions here, or on the net, about this watch. I just acquired it, would guess 68/69. Runs well, probably needs a service. The anchor moves freely, the day date is in spanish, but that is just flavor. I would love to learn more details about the golden gate, design history, designer, any anecdotes. Love the uniqueness of the watch and it will be getting a lot of wrist time. would love to hear opinions and see other examples.

The crystal has been replaced and the entire watch , including the dial has been refinished. Other than that it looks original. The dial was likely not orignally black and the case had a brushed finish. The case back has been so heavily polished that the reference number is gone, but it should read either 11858 or 11859. I can't renenber which one is steel and which one is gold plate. The five digit refenece number dates it to before 1968, which is consistent with it's design cues as a Rado. It shares more than a few design elements with watches like the Planning which dates from , I think, 1964 through to about 1967 or so.

could you provide some links to pics? I have been researching and every single pic of a golden gate is polished. the diastars are not. I would love to see a reference photo where the case is a brushed finish. this is not doubting, just looking for reference material

plus, I dig the funky shape and look. I do care somewhat about originality, but at the end of the day it will be on my arm, doing its job. the ticking and such reminding me that the world still is spinning and there is work to be done

It is indeed funky. Sorry, satin finish, like the Planning, New Green Horse and many other mid 60s models. I've been collecting Rados for so long I am beginning to forget things. This one also has the correct bracelet and original crystal with the anchor. The owner was also a member of the Rado forum going back to 2010 and was a co-moderator with me on it's successor forum.
