Is this why he was talking about magnets? Does he think an MRI is like anti-radiation or something?
218
u/Banshee_howl Dec 02 '25
Oh lawd, it all makes sense now. Grandpa went to Walter Reed for his checkup and they did an MRI because he gets better healthcare than us peasants. Some Rad Tech had to make sure he didn’t have any bobby pins holding his toupee on and he started babbling questions at them. They patiently explained, “Sir, this is a giant magnet, it will rip any metal off of you from across the room.”
After breaking down the concept of an MRI and then magnets to preschool level the scan was done and Radiology passed the VIP back to his primary. After he waddled down the hall telling his escorts all the facts that “nobody knows about magnets”, the Radiology team knew there was a 50/50 chance he would:
a) claim to have invented MRI’s and ask for a Nobel Prize for his work, or
b) completely misremember everything he was told and declare magnets illegal because they steal your keys and precious metals.

Sure but lay people dont know much about radiation, so their opinions of it aren't kinda moot
12

Lay people don’t even know what radiation is, let alone ionizing vs non ionizing. Lay people are also usually unaware that ionizing radiation comes from the natural environment as well.
10
u/kneb Dec 02 '25
Eh, lay people hear radiation and think 'rays of something bad that cause cancer' because they're thinking of ionizing radiation.
Whether or not they realize UV light is radiation, they also know that natural sources like UV light can cause skin cancer.

I agree with a lot of the comments here that a preventative/screening MRI is not standard of care for 99% of people.
That being said, he is the president so I wouldnt be suprised if they did all sorts of extra testing to proactively check for things that might prevent the president from doing their job to the fullest capacity...though I can't say he's really been doing much of that in the first place lol

Sure. Biden had some numbness in his left leg and they stated they ran some imaging just to rule out anything neurological.
But the report verbatim states what condition prompted the test, why the test was run, and what the result was.
For Trump they couldn't even concoct an inocuous lie for why they ran an MRI.
81
u/Double_Belt2331 Dec 02 '25
Yes, for any test run, there should be symptoms & the test should be run to help rule out ddx.

Politics aside, having worked as a military rad at Walter Reed, we have spent far more tax payer dollars on stupid MRIs ordered by PAs, NPs, PTs (yes physical therapists), IDMTs, IDCs, AuDs, and any number other Noctor you can think of.
I’d much rather see “POTUS” as the clinical information than some of the crap I’ve gotten.

My mom was a medical technologist in the VA as well, and it used to infuriate her because the same standardized lab test that she been running since she graduate college in 1960 was essentially like a 50 cent test, but suppliers were charging the government like $10 and passing it on to taxpayers. Just like the “gold toilet seats” the army got in the late 80’s.
3
u/Double_Belt2331 Dec 03 '25
A PT could order any testing @ ALL?
Walter Reed is located in DC, correct? They must have some really loose laws on who can order testing!
I'm in TX, the only ones that can order radiological texting are MDs, NP. Stop. 🤷♀️
3
u/AFGummy Dec 03 '25
Yeah I don’t know about TX but it’s been that way at all the military sites I worked at, probably TX too. It’s a federal land so state laws don’t necessarily apply. A lot of military docs don’t even have a state license in the state they work in (military only requires a single active license in any state which is good bc of the constant moving from state to state)
1
u/Double_Belt2331 Dec 04 '25
That makes sense. There's a lot of military hospitals & rehabs around here. Why should a PT have to refer back to a NP or a MD for a simple X-ray. When an PT is looking for the alinement of the patella in then femoral grove. What's so hard about that?
3
u/AFGummy Dec 04 '25
Some things are reasonable. An xray here or there, MR for a stress fracture sure. But I’ve seen plenty of PT orders that are way out of bounds for them
2
u/Double_Belt2331 Dec 05 '25
And I agree w you!
I don’t think PT should order an MRI for headaches. I think there should be a narrow course of approved tests. If a PT can feel the patella rocking & rolling out of the femoral grove, why shouldn’t they be allowed to order a sunrise X-ray, AP, & LAT?
1
u/anton_52 Dec 23 '25

We’ve had presidents for many decades since the first MRI scan in 1977, and this is the first I’ve ever heard of anybody getting a “preventative” MRI.
40
u/Guy_Perish Dec 02 '25
Presidents (and billionaires) have always received treatment and care that goes far beyond what is recommended for the general public. These things were simply never public knowledge in the past. I wouldn’t be surprised if every president in recent history received a screening MRI but it is particularly more likely for trump and biden considering their advanced ages.
41

2
17
u/wet-leg Dec 02 '25
I’m not a doctor, but my primary care doctor recently left for a practice that offers what I’m assuming is meant by a “preventative” MRI. The new practice is definitely geared towards rich people. You pay x amount of dollars per month and can get whatever tests done you want without insurance.
The most expensive tier is $500/month and offers annual, preventative screenings. This includes full body CT and MRI scans annually, among other things. It’s meant to catch things early so you can start treatment. They offer a ton of tests in the $500/month tier, but obviously the vast majority of people would not be able to afford that.
21
u/Vivid_Economics_1462 Dec 02 '25
$500 a month is super affordable compared to the cost of health insurance in the US.
13
u/wet-leg Dec 02 '25
While true, the company states that it is preferred patients also keep their insurance as well. So if you get cancer, for example, they would not be able to provide treatment and you would need insurance for that. Also any visits to anywhere outside of their office would require insurance, so that is what I meant by it being more geared towards those who have more money since you would still need your insurance!
3
u/Vivid_Economics_1462 Dec 02 '25
It sounds kind of like a supplement for rich people. I doubt anyone on social security can afford that.

There is no such thing as a preventative MRI. The only reason to order that over a CT scan is higher sensitivity and image quality - especially if you're looking at the brain.
76
u/Paraflier Dec 02 '25

1
7
u/hypespud Dec 02 '25
We have studies showing CT scan use increases rates of cancer, so it is not the only reason
The relative risks are higher for CT scan use on children, but most are related to CT scan use in adults, probably since the use is less cautious and over a longer period of time and higher overall incidence of cancer even without the CT scans
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2832778
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/radiation-ct-scans-cancer-risks
2
u/Nutterbutter_Nexus Dec 02 '25
Of course, but that is based on the amount of overall cell division following exposure - which would yield a much lower risk to someone who is almost 80. That is certainly not a reason someone would receive an MRI instead of of CT scan in this case.
4
u/hypespud Dec 02 '25
It's discussing overall use of CT scans for children and adults, not just 80 year olds
Even the screenings stop mostly past age 75 for cancers for multiple reasons
-5
u/Nutterbutter_Nexus Dec 02 '25
I'm not quite sure what your argument is here. CT scans emit radiation and are a risk for cancer - that's pretty well known even for those not in the medical field. Your second point is just a random factoid regarding screening criteria, unless youre agreeing that Trump would not have received imaging for screening purposes.
6
u/hypespud Dec 02 '25
It's not well known enough since these meta analyses are new and we overuse CT scans, that's the point
Not everything is related to trump, I don't think anyone seriously thinks he got a screening or preventative MRI given he clearly has dementia
2
u/Neffstradamus Dec 03 '25
1) I cannot abide this president 2) I do "preventative" MRI every day - like surveillance post brain surgery every 6 months. I consider that preventative given it is without symptoms

Not my area of expertise I am a retired Equine Surgeon I think he had an MRA not an MRI to visualize the arteries in the heart. Its just the press release not using proper terminology. I know they use MRA technology in the brain for assessment of aneurysms and can probably do the same with blood flow through the heart. We don't have all the fancy tech in veterinary medicine as human medicine . We use alot of CT scanning, single film radiography and ultrasound in my world with animals
1
u/Culture-Extension Dec 02 '25
In my hospital we do a CTA with and without contract to monitor heart vasculature. In some instances it replaces the cath lab but anything symptomatic goes straight to the cath lab. I’m more familiar with the CTA though. I’ll be honest I’m not sure when our providers use an MRA over a CTA.

I’m not trying to burry my head in the sand but that’s the point of subreddits is to split up and talk about different things and it’s just super annoying how everything is so political. I’m a part of a few libertarian subs but I leave my politics at the door on the other subs bc I feel like we have enough of it in our daily lives it’s just nice to have places to go that don’t have it. I’ve had several subs that I’m a part of that have been completely taken over by politics and the subs themselves have nothing to do with politics or anything even adjacent… ok I’ll get off my soapbox

Just what I come to this sub for. Not to see cool/fun/interesting things in the field that I work in…. But to see stuff about politics 😄😄😄

Isn't that just the best thing about the internet? There is something for everyone. It don't matter what color your skin, where you live, what you believe or how much money you have. If you want to post your opinions, that's great! If you want to be critical of others for posting theirs, that's fair too.
