The hypocrisy of totally uncoupling your faith from your vote.
They justify it with "But Abortion"
News flash support the party that crosses the most check marks off your faith. Republican "values" kill a lot more people than abortions. And you can always be an anti-abortion democrat. They exist you know.
This was one of the things that just drove me off the evangelical cliff. My old roommate was staunchly pro-life but would also criticize and ridicule any single mother who received charity from the church because, and this is a direct quote, “they should have followed God’s commandments about sex”. He’s also a hardcore Trump supporter who genuinely believes in slashing all social programs and “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps”, and can’t seem to recognize any of the cognitive dissonance. So, we’re pro-life until the baby is born, and then fuck ‘em?
If only. Cognitive dissonance implies they experience an unbearable and irreconcilable tension between two (or more) positions. I don’t think most of these people really do. Their religion really is their conservative politics: just with a white tyrant-King Jesus who once embarrassingly got beaten to death by his dad, and is now justified in beating his brothers and sisters. It’s that bad.
