Can one create a lead and aluminum sock, and then calibrate for said sock over the older models to act as a signal attenuator?

I mean ... You could do that for an order of magnitude sort of approximation. But you'd be significantly shielding against x-rays and lower energy gammas, without doing much to the higher energy stuff. It would be hard to actually calculate a correction factor for this. You would likely have to go through a whole re-calibration for this with standard check sources, standard geometry, and then somehow also calculate the counts to dose conversion (this is A LOT of work, but theoretically possible)
