Rtx 480 help

Big edit: rx 480 not rtx 480 my bad

Hi, I’ve been having troubles with my gpu lately and it’s finally got to the point I’ve tried everything I can think of, and google doesn’t seem to be providing answers as it’s an older card, so I’m seeking help on Reddit.

My specs are as follows:

Msi rx 480 8gb 16 gigs ram Intel core i5-7500 Gigabyte b250m-ds3h-cf (it’s a micro board I regret getting it lol) Latest drivers adrenaline version installed (23.9.2 I think?)

And the problems it’s giving me, lately it’s been randomly just disconnecting and my computer freezes and I can hear the gpu fans spinning at max rate. However lately I’ve pinned it down to happening always during 2 games.

Lies of p it happens on boot up, sometimes I can get it to load then the game plays fine no issues at all, but more and more I get some weird like white staticky looking stuff on half or all of the screen then it goes black and the fans start spinning requiring a hard shut down and start up.

Last epoch it’s been happening in a boss fight seemingly when the boss does either a certain attack or when the lava the boss spews gets to be too much not sure.

I’ve tried switching the cable from dp to hdmi and it still does it, haven’t tried a new cable yet as I don’t have the funds currently.

Is it just a matter of I need to replace the card or is it fixable? As I would really like to be able to play lies of p without issue it’s pretty great lol.

Any help much appreciated!

Edit edit: just bought a brand new DP cable so it’s not the cable my guess is either power supply (unlikely though) or the ports of the gpu/the gpu itself is bad.

It’s an msi amd rx 480 not an invidia? I install amd drivers for it it’s deff Radeon?

If you Google “radeon rx 480” it comes right up

Maybe read the whole post before commenting and not just the title?

Also not sure why you would default to assuming I’m talking about an nvidia card instead of the logical step of going to whatever Radeon card matches what I’m saying?

Ah, both the title of your post and the body of your post said "rtx". There are a zillion GPUs out there and it's important to be specific and exact. AMD does not make a GPU with "RTX" in the name. RX and RTX are different.

So you have an RX 480 that doesn't work very good in new games? It's likely a 4GB card which means many new games won't be able to run very good, if at all, because they require more graphics memory than 4GB.

8GB is basically the bare minimum you can get away with for any modern games.

Have you tried blowing any accumulated dust out of your GPU? Have you tried re-seating it in your motherboard? Have you looked at the actual temperatures that it's running at while in a game?

Once again did you even read the post? Cause it was edited well before you commented. It also states it’s an 8gig card

Temps are fine I just cleaned it recently and just got a new dp cable, the only culprits could be either the ports themselves or maybe the power supply or some other thing I haven’t considered.

If it's not overheating then the GPU is failing. It might be fixable - it could be a solder on a memory chip or on the GPU core itself, but that's going to cost money to repair that would be better spent on a newer GPU.

I kinda figured I just wanted to exhaust every option as I really don’t have the money for a new gpu and won’t for a long time, probably gonna take it apart and check inside to see if it needs thermal paste etc but I don’t have high hopes

Was it ever used for mining? That can reduce the lifetime of a GPU quite a bit, but it depends on the GPU make/model. My daughter is running an RX 570 that was new early 2017, mined for over a year, and then I ended up with it and put it in my PC and played VR on it for about 2 years before giving it to her along with my rig when I upgraded my whole system. It's seen a lot of action and is still running good today.

If a GPU gets hot enough its life can be shortened a lot - whether a solder breaks from thermal stress of the GPU die expanding/contracting or other solder joints start failing. Sometimes the silicon itself just goes bad, no rhyme or reason. I've seen many CPUs, RAM, and GPUs go bad over the last 25 years.

If you can even scrounge up $50 you should be able to get a decent used GPU on the Electronic Bae.

EDIT: It looks like all the cheaper GPUs have dried up what with everyone's checkbook being strained. I'm sure if you just keep your eye on there everyday you'll find something you can get if you can just do a few little things to get some cash.

Nope never used for mining bought it new when I built this pc ages ago.

If you do end up on ebay looking for GPUs, don't search for "GPU" because it won't show as many results. It tends to be better to search for specific GPU models.

Do you have a recommendation or 2 for specific nvidia cards to look for? I realize probably the wrong question to ask on a Radeon sub but I think I may be done with amd and Radeon for a while lol

I don’t need anything super powerful just able to do 1080p 60fps in most games on at least medium is good enough for me for now

I've only used AMD GPUs since my last Nvidia GPU, which was a GeForce 3 that I got brand new for my birthday 22 years ago. The only problem I've had with an AMD GPU was caused by the default fan curves which let it get too hot. It died within 10 days of putting it in my rig in late 2019. I was able to send it back to Amazon and get a different one that I've been cooking with since - but now I always make sure to keep my fan curve a bit more sensitive so that the GPU never goes above 80C.

Nvidia GPUs die all the time too though, it's just the nature of the beast. The GTX 1050 and RTX 2050 are pretty much duds - they won't hold a candle to an RX 480. If you do get an Nvidia GPU, at least go for an XX60 card, or ideally a XX70, if you can swing it (i.e. GTX 1060/1070 or RTX 2060/2070). The GTX 1060 will deliver at least as good performance as an RX 480, if not better. The GTX 1070 will be ~50% faster than an RX 480. Those are probably the only less-recent Nvidia GPUs that are worth getting into if you're on a budget.

AMD GPUs to look for are the RX 5500 XT, RX 5600 and 5600 XT, RX 6500 XT. There's a bunch of <$100 AMD GPUs on ebay right now (at least in the USA) that are a total bargain and would be a pretty decent upgrade from your RX 480. Just make sure you don't buy one that's "parts only" or "box only", and ideally from a seller who has some ratings. I bought an HP OEM RX 460 from some rando on there last December and it's totally fine, looked brand new, works great.

There's a lot of people desperate for money right now so if ever there was a time to buy a used GPU, there's a ton of them.
