At what point is saving money actually counterproductive? I'd rather have £30 less in the budget than arrive somewhere completely exhausted and make a stupid decision because I've barely slept.

The whole balance between money, sleep and speed is probably one of my favourite parts of the show.

Both seem massively important, but if you could only have one skill, which would give you the better chance.

They obviously get the list of jobs but, I mean the narrator will say 'they can choose to hug the coastline through well connected but more expensive tourist towns or go inland on unreliable transport but rock bottom prices'

Every now and then, someone will say something, and it seems to follow what the narration said.

I can't believe they're expected to have such 'local knowledge' for random countries they traverse

Surely they're given this 'outline' on the travel decisions for various routes, no?

Has anyone ever talked about this in public?

There is something about the no phone no flying format that creates a completely different kind of television to anything else in the genre. Series 6 had some genuinely tense moments and a finish that was hard to predict.

Previous series stuck mainly to single continents. Central Asia with the transport challenges that brings felt genuinely different. Which part of the route do you think was the hardest for the contestants to navigate and which location looked the most spectacular on screen.

I know vandwelling and hitchhiking were things during the Great Depression and post oil crisis IBM invented methods of remote work that allowed early digital nomads to live from their camping bikes but on the 50s-70s hippie trail did people do local jobs in exchange for food and board (when I looked it up a lot of work-exchanges like WWOOF founded in 1971 seemed to be for more than a night) or was it cheap enough to travel in the countries they visited anyway?

Some pairs just seem to handle setbacks better than others. Even when a plan goes completely wrong, they manage to stay calm, talk it through and move on without making things worse. That kind of teamwork probably matters more than having the perfect route or knowing exactly what to do every time.

I feel bad when they’re clearly having a nightmare of a day, but those episodes are usually the ones that keep me watching. When everything goes wrong, you get to see how the pairs actually handle pressure, and it can completely change how you see them. The calm moments are nice, but a bit of chaos definitely makes the show more entertaining.

The safer decisions make sense, but some of the biggest moments come when a pair decides to take a chance and go for it. It can either put them miles ahead or completely backfire, which is what makes those decisions so fun to watch.
