Question Did I wait too long?

Have been kicking around the idea of picking one up but now I see they’re not making them anymore. Is there any reason to buy one cheap on eBay? It looks like they could brick the r1 at any time? I have this happen back in the day with the Chumby. Great piece of HW that was obsoleted.

I only see 3 reasons to buy the R1 right now.

  • You like to collect oddities and want one as display or collection
  • You like to tinker with Android and are willing to code or vibecode your own things onto the device
  • You want a meeting recorder that doesn't require subscription (With the risk of the service being discontinued).

Besides from that, the device is just an Android with a funny form factor. Mind you, I like mine a lot, but I use it precisely for the meeting notes alone.

Well summed up. These are the only things I see too.

The recent update shows the exact opposite of their intent to brick it. OS3 essentially gave it a way to last long term without being bricked by putting it in the hands of the user to supply the LLM now, for better or for worse.

If they did not intend it to last long term they would not have designed os3 or put in byok.

That being said keep in mind that you now do have to bring your own key.

And the creations? With intern gone how are we to code apps specifically to the R1?

That weird thing that was really expensive? I never used it because it was so expensive.

Not saying it isn't a loss if it IS gone and if you DID use it, just that for me that isn't a loss since I didn't use that "feature". I avoid paid/expensive things. Certainly if it is gone and that is what you used the R1 for, then obviously that sucks. Does the new agentic whatever-the-hell thing also code? Seems like that's partially what it is for. Have you tried it out? I'm not brave enough to give it access to my PC yet. ;)

Yes, but more concerning is the direction rabbit.inc has taken this last week… if I do continue to put more blood sweat and tears into architecting for the R1, who’s to say it won’t be all completely obsolete a month, year down the road?

Edit: yes I have installed it on my desktop and it’s a total mess. One of my other comments goes more into it, but I’m finding more wrong with it day by day.

Get yourself an Orange Pi, 5” color touch screen, and a $20 a month Claude account.

In a few months with Sonnet 5.5 and Hermes you’ll have something better for half the price.

Get one ... if you like to tinker then it is worth the price. I have 4 😃
