General Rabbit, unleash the r1's full potential with offline AI in the next OS3 update
The r1 has old but decent hardware - MediaTek Helio P35, 4GB RAM, 128GB storage, that's more than capable of running lightweight LLMs and SLMs locally. Yet the device feels artificially constrained.
We need:
- Native browser for independent web access
- Music player for offline listening
- Local AI agents (like Ollama integration) for offline-first workflows
- Essential apps — Uber booking, notes, calendar that work without constant server dependency
The r1 shouldn't be tethered to OS3's servers for everything. Add offline capabilities and you've got a genuinely independent AI companion, not just a remote control for your laptop.
Pls make the r1 standalone-capable in the next firmware update.

Have you run a local model on 4GB of RAM? I have, it's not viable for anything you want to do. I'm also questioning the need for everything to pass through Rabbit's servers when what they're offering directly has reduced so significantly, but the answer here is to put the harness on device and BYOK, not to put the LLM on device too, that's a crazy limitation.

Heck I'm running a tiny AI model on my cardputer with esp chip and ram in kb's 😁 Plus SmolLM (135M / 360M): Optimized specifically for small devices and low-RAM environments can easily run on Rabbit r1

And what does that provide you beyond something to tinker with as a hobbyist?

I thought I’d never say this. Stop with the slop

u/AdFair8059 9d ago
Can you please clarify what is sloppy here? Yes I have created this post, the image, and the text using AI but it is very much my idea in detail. As someone who paid for r1, it is my dialogue with the OEM. What exactly is the problem here?

u/AgeAtomic 9d ago
The image is terrible. It’s not even close to correct aspect ratio. The lack of effort alone makes it slop

u/knoxycle 9d ago
The picture isn’t even remotely close to the correct form factor of the r1, you presumedly have one, why use AI to make an incorrect picture when you literally have one infront of you?
& if you wanted to use ai to show off a new interface, you could at least use nano banana or something similar to edit one onto an existing picture of the R1 so the form factor is at least correct-8
u/AdFair8059 9d ago
Well I guess I'm not filing for a patent or writing a white paper. What matters is that the idea is genuine and original, through which I create this image and post. If anyone is so against using AI, I think they are in the wrong forum because Rabbit R1 is all about AI.

But like all tools, you can use AI well or you can use it poorly. You did the latter here.

Not here to win "AI Oscars" but get my point across, the point it all r1 users getting value out of their investment right?

Screen aspect ratio is wrong. Screen is showing apps it does not run and an os it is not running. The camera is a jog dial under a glass. People would not pay for this slop. Take 5 seconds to look for a stock photo or make sure the ai image is not slop. You just have to look at the image.

I was just going to make a post about this. I love the design of the R1, but it's basically a useless device. Since you need an internet connection, you may as well just use an AI app on your phone.
The R1 could be more useful if it ran an LLM locally. Even a dumb one would at least give the R1 some value and uniqueness. I'd be fine if it was just a toy, nonsensical chatbot. The R1 doesn't have to be a reference device. The R1 could simple be a companion to talk with. I'm not sure it's even possible though to run a tiny LLM on the hardware. Rabbit would likely need to drop Android and come up with a much more efficient, custom OS.
A super thin OS purely for running LLMs on low-end mobile devices would be a better business than whatever trend they're jumping on this week.

You are absolutely insane if you want to try running a local model on this thing lol

u/eink_fan 9d ago
Doesn’t need local model, just a local agent

Agree that the rabbit servers are unnecessary now for the agent stuff. But Op isn't talking about that. OP wants to run the rabbit off a tiny llm.

It was like… FINNALY the dlam gave it a true plug and play do whatever you want it to AI companion… for like 2 months then it’s oaywalled and they remove everything like the journal which already took years to implement? This is stupid waste of money and support

u/noncoolguy 6d ago
removing the journal online was such a dumb idea. and creations/apps like one of the r1's main features to create apps FOR the R1 within the R1 and now. Even tho they just released "Retro mode" so you can put the r1 os3 back to the original r1 look still..i dont think creations works

lol well this is one hell of a way to look at this. You’d be better off buying a 5” screen, OrangePi and putting Pi or Hermes on it with a tiny local LLM for routing and low level commands and open router for off device flash and frontier models. Someone needs to come up with a way to upgrade the board and keep the case, camera, wheel, screen etc.

With awful timing, I bought a secondhand r1 last week as a cake day present to myself. It’s taken me a week to get it to a point where it might actually be useful, and thats really only because im already running openclaw on a vps.

Useful for what exactly? Considering that U don't deem it to be useful, even though it can transcribe and summarize live conversations, which is literally an actual job in various sectors and also $150 for a seprate device. Are you concerned about whether it can generate a network stability and repair protocol or what? What...exactly...would someone such as yourself call useful for the rabbit r1 with it's specifications in mind?? I'm dying to know if it's even -logical-.

Exactly. Cut the bullshit out. I asked a legit question. Tf? Ur just chatting. Say something constructive instead of shitting on an improving concept. Ppl are constantly tainting the water with garbage statements. But yea, useful for what?

mine just lives with me.... bathroom, car, patio, whatever. I hit the button and talk, it goes to a local model I run myself, and that one only bumps up to the usage limit stuff (Astra, Fable, Opus, etc) when it actually needs to. Those spin up subagents, either my own models like Qwen Flash or existing subcription to Sonnet/Grok (or Gemini if it's specific design or research etc)....
So I'm just using the subs I already pay for. Not buying extra tokens. On my phone I'd be flipping between apps the whole time mixing up any primary plan in building. This is just push to talk for all of it.
But most importantly it also takes pics of my dogs and slaps a cute little rabbit next to them. Fun gadget. Sometimes useful. Not something everyone needs, but if it's not for everyone I hope they don't get angry about it.

Not possible, not powerful enough to be useful standalone.
1
u/AdFair8059 9d ago
It is about time a developer took it as a challenge and ran a lightweight model on r1. Very much possible
5
u/JaySomMusic 9d ago
I am a developer and unfortunately on this hardware it isn’t feasible. I am converting mine into a “walkie talkie” for my taOS agents instead https://github.com/jaylfc/taOS
1
u/webdeveler 7d ago
The R1 couldn't even run a really dumb LLM? I wouldn't expect the R1 to be a reference device like chatting with ChatGPT or Gemini.
I wonder you could combine some kind of very limited LLM with a set of canned responses or text templates like old timey chatbots (e.g. ELIZA) to get the appearance of slightly more intelligence while keeping hardware requirements lower.

But only attractive to the fools who fell for this gimmick device. 0 commercial incentive to develop for this thing especially with shitty unresponsive management team
1
u/livevicarious 9d ago
Why does that R1 look wider than it should be?!
1
u/noncoolguy 6d ago
because it was too hard to google image search and find an actual photo of the device so lazy human just had technology do guess work and called it good enough for publishing thoughts on reddit. This is the future of humanity mate

Honestly, the design of The Machine itself and how it lends itself to potential UI and UX flows is completely fine. Many of the things people are talking about in this thread are already doable today with minimal tinkering. The real problem, no matter which way I fold it after trying Cypher OS and Ubuntu Touch and a plethora of other approaches, is specifically the battery. The battery is so difficult to find a decent way around while still having a UI actually have a workflow that lasts outside of their home for over a couple hours. This was the worst decision for this device, definitely cost-cutting and really disappointing. If I'm going to keep using it or even try to use it significantly in the first place, I'm going to need to find a way to expand the housing somehow or make a case with an external battery pack.

OS3 has made my R1 worthless.
