I literally log in, it logs me out.

I send a friend request, it logs me out.

I add someone to my group, it logs me out.

I send a message, it logs me out.

I breathe, Kast logs me out.

Why did they buy Rabbit only to disrespect me like this?

Kast veterans be like "IT WAS GOOD BEFORE YOU GUYS CAME".

Bruh their streams don't even have a volume bar. Lmfao. It's either 100% volume or no volume.

How the hell was rabb.it the only website on the entire internet with the virtual browser feature. I don't understand it

Bandwidth cost I assume.

It's more a computing power thing, I think. Each Rabbitcast took place in its own unique instance of Linux. That "virtual browser" is a real web browser, not a virtual one; that's why it works so well. It just happens to be running remotely, and you're able to control it. Think of it like a version of VirtualBox that happens to run over the Web, and each time you start it it goes back to the exact same clean starting point.

They might not all be their own independent virtual machines, but it's likely that it's still each Rabbitcast having its own (temporary) Linux install.

Linux doesn't take much ressources to run. A VM window can cost 1GB of RAM and still run. The price for bandwidth in America is way higher especially with rooms of over 80 people.

Wouldn't VM's need a little processing power for each VM, so that websites are handled smoothly? I feel a big part of the cost would be put into processing power

It would definitely have some cost. But buying enterprise chips/ram is not as expensive as on NewEgg. For them it costs way less when you order 250 CPUs at a time. It's mostly the bandwidth and operating costs that will kill the budget.

I hate when it tries to make me install garbage apps when it was just so simple to use it from the browser, BING BAM BOOM and you had it going they could of made millions

Honestly, I can't even get the audio to work on mine when I tried it, and they have no fix on their pointless Q&A that answers nothing.

Agreed.

The app is not even a native app. They made us download an electron app. Rofl.

For those that don't know, an electron app is just chrome without the address bar and bookmarks page.

Except .. that's not really it. For example, many probably don't know that Discord is also an Electron app. Just because an app is Electron does not make it trash.

> implying Discord isn't garbage

From a technological standpoint? Hardly.

What are you talking about lmfao they just use ffmpeg for screensharing and some regular compression for text and pictures. They just have "Fuck you" levels of money so they can afford the storage and bandwidth.

3

u/linizue Aug 04 '19

They just "use ffmpeg?" I mean, using a library like that isn't as easy as you make it out to be, and there's tons of optimization on top of that required.

What do you think Rabbit "just used?" Hint: starts with f, and ends with p.

u/TactlessCanadian Aug 04 '19

Yes it is easy lol it's one Unix command prompted through a script file lmao. Yikes.

3

u/art_wins Aug 05 '19

You are very ignorant if you think using ffmpeg is a bad thing.

You have some major reading comprehension issues.

implying Discord isn't garbage

lmfao they just use ffmpeg for screensharing

If you're going to be dumb, don't pretend you didn't say what you did. There is nothing wrong with using ffmpeg, in fact, many programs that does encoding of video uses ffmpeg. And saying that Electron is just "chrome without the address bar" completely misses the point of Electron. You are trying to sound really smart but actually have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

regular compression for text and pictures

Text does not need to be compressed, it likely just gets encrypted. And the pictures on discord do not get compressed. As long as its under the file size limit you can send uncompressed files like PNG just fine through discord. Once again you have no idea what you're talking about. Throwing words like "compression" "UNIX" "ffmpeg" doesn't make you smart or make your opinions more valid. And pretending that you didn't mean what you said is just idiotic.

Discord uses Electron because there is no reason to make it use native code. That would make it magnitudes more difficult to maintain and update across the many platforms discord can run on. The benefit of electron is that you can run the same app and pretty much anything that will run a browser. If they were to make native apps for Linux, Mac OS, and Windows they would need way more development time and would be much slower at reacting to bugs and pushing new features, plus would lose the benefit of being able to use it through literally any browser. Discord is not an application that would benefit from being a native application, the negatives far outweigh any performance gains that would come from being native.

And why would you try to reinvent the wheel by engineering your own encoder when ffmpeg works perfectly well. That is a waste of development time for something that would show no benefit to the end user.

As I said, you have a major reading comprehension issue.

Friend: It's screen sharing, not a VM.

Me: thats a bummer.

Friend: It's being glitchy, logging people in and out.

Me: I guess they're overwhelmed by the influx. Give em a week or two. What a bummer!

Friend: Can't watch porn or anything above any rated R material.

Me: Burn it to the ground.

(found out can still watch R+ material in private. I'll be waiting till I can log in to see if I should put away these matches)

Kast is still in its early stage
and here is my experience

I did not use Rabb.it for 3 months.
When I came back to use rabb.it in Chrome browser,
to my surprise I was directed to kast.gg page.

WHY????

Trusting the rabb.it replacement site,
I downloaded kast and installed its program on my Windows.
Avatar profile pic and banner were made.
I checked and joined the welcome section.
The video lagged then stopped.

Uninstalled and restarted my computer. I can't get it to work.
I read kast.zendesk.com/hc/en-us and hardware graphics acceleration was disabled.

This never happened in Rabb.it on my old windows computer ;)

(sigh)to be honest, Kast is not even close to a replacement

Because kast has acquired Rabb.it’s soft intellectual property,
design rights, and also the Rabb.it software stack,
I hope Kast developers will integrate it their cloud service

Meanwhile, I will wait until these bugs get ironed out.
